The Principle of Inscriptive Actualization
MS 5490.21 · Practices and doctrines
The Principle of Inscriptive Actualization is the foundational procedural tenet of the Literalist School, formally established by the Treatise on Unmediated Governance (Tower Record Y84-0017). It states that any subject, event, or state of affairs is rendered existent and thus catalogable within the Tower only at the precise moment it is physically described in an approved archival medium. It is the primary operational mechanism by which the contents of the Tower are generated and regulated.
Formalization and Core Doctrine
The principle was codified in Year 84 as the first major administrative directive following the formal establishment of the Department of Inscriptive Harmony. The Treatise on Unmediated Governance posited that the act of inscription is not merely descriptive but constitutive, creating the very reality it purports to document. This resolved the long-standing paradox of how to catalogue phenomena that, by definition, do not exist outside the archival context. The Principle is deliberately absolute; a subject does not exist for the purposes of the Tower until it is written. Attempts to discuss, hypothesize about, or even obliquely reference an as-yet-unwritten subject are considered procedural nullities, a concept further elaborated in the Documentation of Negation.
Operational Mechanics
Application of the Principle is governed by a rigorous protocol. Initiation requires a Declaration of Intent to Inscribe, filed with a Supervisor of Script. The inscription itself must be performed at a designated archival station using approved ink and vellum. The moment the final glyph of the primary descriptive sentence is fixed, the phenomenon is considered actualized. This instant is recorded by the Department’s Central Chronolog as the “Moment of Manifestation,” which becomes the subject’s official inception date. The phenomenon then immediately becomes subject to all relevant Tower governance, including spatial allocation on a suitable floor and the assignment of maintenance duties to the Cartesian Speculists. The Principle interacts directly with the Closed System Principle, reinforcing the Tower's ontological self-containment; nothing actualized by inscription claims or requires an external referent.
Regulatory Framework and the Department of Inscriptive Harmony
The Department of Inscriptive Harmony is vested with exclusive authority to regulate, measure, and arbitrate all phenomena arising from the Principle’s application. Its mandate includes preventing “Precipitous Actualization” (the accidental bringing into being of an incomplete or contradictory subject) and adjudicating disputes of “Scriptural Primacy” when two inscriptions describing ostensibly identical subjects are completed simultaneously. The Department’s authority is rooted in Concordance 12, Clause 4, though this is frequently contested by citations of the contradictory Clause 7 of Concordance 31. The Department also enforces the Principle of Catalogued Reality, which determines a subject’s cataloguability prior to inscription, and manages the procedural interface with the Principle of Contiguous Meaning.
The Literalist Schism and Doctrinal Rifts
The practical application of the Principle was fundamentally rifted during the Literalist Schism of Y143. The dissenting faction, later known as the Provisionalists, argued that the Principle contained an implicit grace period: that a subject could be considered “provisionally existent” during the act of inscription itself, a state they termed “Manuscript Potential.” TheLiteralists, led by the treatise’s primary author, maintained the doctrine of instantaneous, binary transition from non-existence to existence at the stroke of the pen. The Schism was officially settled in favor of theinterpretation by Concordance 55, but the dispute permanently influenced procedural guidelines, leading to the creation of the Archives of Extinct Possibilities to house subjects rendered non-viable by the ruling.
Notable Limitations and Exceptions
The Principle does not apply universally. It is held inoperative for phenomena governed by the Principle of Architectural Silence and is considered secondary to the Thorne Principle in matters pertaining to vertical transit. Furthermore, its efficacy is deliberately suspended within certain designated testing areas on Floors 707 and 1,114-B, as per Annex Δ of Concordance 22. A minor but persistent scholarly debate concerns whether the Principle applies to its own stating in the Treatise—a classic recursive paradox often debated in lower-archive symposiums. The prevailing administrative view, upheld by the Department, is that the Treatise is a constitutive document of the Tower’s administrative reality and therefore exists in a special metascriptural category, unaffected by the very rule it establishes.
