The Postulate

MS 6916.53 · Practices and doctrines

The Postulate is the standard form of ideational object catalogued within The Tower, defined by Concordance 7-Omega, Annex D-3, as “a coherent statement of a non-truth, sufficiently articulated to permit analysis, cross-referencing, and eventual supersession.” It constitutes the primary administrative unit of non-existent knowledge within the archive.

The genesis, lifecycle, and adjudication of Postulates are governed by the meta-administrative Postulate of Form. According to standard procedure outlined in Form 18-C, a Postulate is formally instantiated upon the filing of a Declaration with the Office of Verification. This act moves the idea from a state of unstructured potential into a catalogued entity with a designated Floor, shelf coordinates, and a unique alphanumeric identifier (e.g., Postulate 44-Alpha). The lifespan of a Postulate typically ends in one of three ways: integration into a higher-order Doctrine, dissolution via a Declaration of Procedural Anomaly, or archival into the Implied Null State.

Structural Anatomy

A fully realized Postulate contains several mandatory components, as per the filing instructions in Form NOC-4a. These include a Core Assertion (the non-truth itself), a set of Corollary Inferences (logical, albeit unsound, extensions), a Scope of Applicability (defining where within the Tower the Postulate is considered “real”), and a Register of Contradictions listing all known Concordances or other Postulates it explicitly negates. The often-cited example of Postulate 44-Alpha (“The Whispering Shelf”), for instance, asserts a non-existent shelf on Floor 308 holds a definitive biography of a Librarian; its Corollary Inferences include the nature of the whispers heard near its conceptual location and the presumed contents of the non-existent book.

Scholarly Disputes on Ontological Status

The ontological nature of Postulates is a primary point of contention between Tower schools of thought. The Monist School argues that a Postulate, once catalogued, attains a form of “procedural reality” that is functionally indistinguishable from the Tower’s physical structure; to them, the whispering described in Postulate 44-Alpha is as real as the stone of the stairs. Conversely, the Alpha Purists maintain that Postulates are purely administrative entities with no phenomenological footprint, arguing that any reported sensory experience associated with one (such as the whispers) is a misfiled personal impression, not a property of the Postulate itself. The School of Residual Imprints takes a middle position, proposing that heavily referenced or long-standing Postulates can leave faint “imprints” on their assigned Floor, which may manifest as auditory or tactile anomalies.

“A Postulate does not need to be true, or even possible; it need only be administrable.”
— Clarification of Annex B, Section 9, Line 22

Adjudication and Supersession

Conflicts between Postulates, or between a Postulate and a governing Concordance, are resolved within the Frame of Adjudication. The process relies heavily on the Axiom of Precedential Hierarchy to rank conflicting directives. A lower-order Postulate may be wholly subsumed by a higher-order Doctrine, a process formalized by a Declaration of Procedural Anomaly. In rare cases, a Postulate may be judged “irreconcilably fertile”—generating more viable sub-Postulates than can be administratively managed—leading to its dissolution and the sealing of its records under the Clean Page Doctrine.

Notable Incidents of Postulate Leakage

Postulates are intended to be context-bound to their catalogued location. However, incidents of “postulate leakage,” where the Corollary Inferences of a powerful Postulate begin to manifest outside their designated Scope, are documented. The most significant was the Grey Emanation of Cycle 8,422, attributed to an unstable interaction between Postulate 44-Alpha and a since-dissolved doctrine regarding silent reading. The leakage was contained by a team from the Observatorium of Errant Postulate using a temporary baffle chamber constructed from Ignorance Marble, as recorded in their incident log. This event led to the establishment of stricter Scope parameters in subsequent filings.

Role in Tower Ecology

Beyond their archival function, Postulates serve as the primary engine of bureaucratic activity within the Tower. The continuous work of verifying, cross-referencing, amending, and reconciling Postulates occupies a majority of Librarian man-hours. The system is deliberately self-perpetuating; as one scholar of the Monist School noted, “The Tower is not a library that contains Postulates; it is a Postulate that has manifested as a library.” The careful balance between the generative nature of Postulates and the constraining framework of the Concordances is what maintains the Tower’s endless, stable expansion.
