The Catalogue of Absences
MS 4694.03 · Documents and ordinances
The Catalogue of Absences is the primary conceptual index and procedural framework governing the recognition, verification, and filing of all absences within the Tower. Maintained by the Central Catalogue under the authority of Annex Δ-7 of the Third Concordance, it serves as the meta-structure for specialized subsidiary catalogues such as the Catalogue of Unheard Melodies and the Catalogue of Unfinished Bridges. Its protocols define what constitutes a valid absence, the process for its certification by a Witness of Absence, and its proper archival location.
Purpose and Scope
The Catalogue does not itself contain absences; rather, it catalogues the types and instances
Structural Organization
The Catalogue is organized as a dynamic lattice of cross-references. Its core is the Master Typology of Lacunae, which classifies absences into Formal, Contextual, and Projected categories. Each category branches into subsidiary indices, which then link to specific holdings or to other catalogues. For example, the "Contextual: Architectural" branch points to the Catalogue of Unfinished Bridges, while the "Formal: Textual" branch maintains links to the Canon of Preserved Absences. A separate volume, the Register of Certified Voids, logs every CVA issued, noting the certifying Witness, the date of realization, and the assigned Spirelocation coordinates if applicable.
Certification and Realization
An absence does not enter the Catalogue until it has been validated. The process begins with a Petition of Lacuna, submitted to a Witness of Absence. The Witness must ascertain that the proposed absence is non-trivial, well-bounded, and does not duplicate an already-certified void. Upon approval, the Witness issues a CVA. This act of certification is referred to as "realization," a term central to the debates of the Nullity Realists, who argue over whether realization confers ontological status or merely administrative recognition. Realized absences with spatial implications require Spirelocation to prevent them from interfering with physical archives or other realized voids.
The most famous—and contentious—certification was the "Absence of the Phantom Catalogue," a meta-absence referring to the missing catalogue that would have documented the contents of the Phantom Catalogue of Floor Ξ-9. Its CVA (No. 7,412) was signed after fourteen years of deliberative committee review.
Controversies and Schisms
The Catalogue's authority has not been unchallenged. The Catalogue Schism of Floor 10,112 originated from a dispute over whether the Catalogue's name implied it was a catalogue made of absences or a catalogue about absences—a foundational debate for the Interpretivist School. Furthermore, the Catalogue Lacuna Incident of the 9th Recorded Cycle exposed a critical flaw: a cascade of recursive absence-certifications nearly caused a sigil collapse on Floor 900, leading to the temporary imposition of the Nimbus Catalogue protocols under the Clean Page Doctrine.
Modern procedural disputes often center on the cataloguing of "negative spaces," a field advanced by the Lost Catalogue of Negative Space, and the handling of "temporary absences," now largely delegated to the specialized Catalogue of Temporary Exceptions.
Administrative Governance
Daily operations fall under the Department of Lacunary Affairs, a bureau of the Central Catalogue. The Department is responsible for updating the Master Typology, resolving cross-referential conflicts, and auditing the Register of Certified Voids for entropy or duplication. All amendments to certification procedure must be ratified as a Supplementary Concordance to Annex Δ-7. The Department's most recent published edict, Ordinance 117.4, clarified the handling of "absences of expectation," such as the missing conclusion to an unresolved musical phrase, directing them to be filed under "Projected: Aural" with a mandatory cross-reference to the Catalogue of Unheard Melodies.
