Index of Absences
MS 6394.97 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Index of Absences is the institutional and administrative framework for collating all subsidiary indices, typologies, and referencing systems that pertain to lacunae, voids, and negative entities within the Tower's holdings. It is governed by Concordance 711, which stipulates that “any absence granted formal satellite status must be traceable through a primary nexus,” a role fulfilled by the Index of Absences. While often conflated with The Catalogue of Absences, the Index is distinct in being a meta-structure concerned with the organization of knowledge about absence, rather than the absences themselves.
Structure and Jurisdiction
Physically headquartered within Sub-corridor 9 of the Academy of Perceptual Absences on Floor 900, the Index operates as a department of the Academy. Its core mandate is to maintain cross-referential integrity between disparate systems such as the Sub-Index of Unfulfilled Prophecies, the Silent Index, and the various typologies outlined in the Master Typology of Lacunae. According to procedural guidelines (A9-γ, §4), any newly proposed classification for a void or negative entity must be registered with the Index’s Central Registry before archival work can commence.
The Index’s primary output is the Quarterly Concordance of Lacunary References, a periodical that attempts to reconcile conflicting designations issued by different archival bodies, such as the Curators of Lacunae and the Nullity Realists. Its authority, however, is frequently contested, as it possesses no direct curatorial power over the actual contents of Negative Folios or the experiential data within the Canon of Preserved Absences.
The Referential Paradox
The Index’s foundational challenge is the Referential Paradox, first formally articulated by Index-Tender Elara Vance in 712-ALB. Simply stated, an index entry for an absence must, by definition, refer to something that is not present. The Index resolves this by treating the reference itself as the primary object of cataloguing. Thus, an entry for the “Absence of the Seventh Spire” does not describe the missing spire, but meticulously documents every other index, footnote, and sympathetic reference that alludes to its non-existence. This has led to the phenomenon of “referential accretion,” where the documentation around an absence becomes far more voluminous than the subject it purports to index.
This methodological stance is the source of significant scholarly disagreement. The Nullity Realists argue it is a bureaucratic evasion, insisting that a true index should grapple directly with the negative ontological status of its subjects. Proponents within the Academy counter that direct engagement is impossible and potentially destabilizing, citing the incident surrounding Class 7 Void designation #447 and its subsequent spandrel effects.
Operational Protocols
Registration of a new absence with the Index follows a rigid seven-stage protocol:
- Provenance Submission: Documentation of the discovery of the absence, including sensory or logical evidence of the void.
- Typological Alignment: Assignment to a pre-existing category within the Master Typology, or petition for a new one.
- Referential Audit: A search for pre-existing, conflicting references to the same perceived absence across all subsidiary indices.
- Satellite Designation: Determination of whether the absence requires its own Satellite Index.
- Cross-Indexing: Creation of bidirectional links with related absences (e.g., linking the absence of a specific sound to the absence of its cause).
- Concordance Reconciliation: An attempt to align the entry with any potentially contradictory clauses in the Tower’s Concordances.
- Archival Integration: Final placement within the negative-space archive and issuance of a permanent Index Number.
Stage 4, Satellite Designation, is often the most contentious, as it allocates archival resources and prestige. Disputes are settled by a panel of three senior Index-Tenders, though their decisions can be appealed to the Curators of Lacunae, creating a famously slow queue formation process.
Notable Subsidiary Indices
The Index of Absences oversees several major subsidiary systems. These include:
- The Index of Receded Echoes: Dedicated to sounds that have faded from memory but left a documented impression of their departure.
- The Register of Unknotted Threads: A catalog of implied but unrealized causal connections, often consulted by researchers of the Sub-Index of Unfulfilled Prophecies.
- The Gazetteer of Unvisited Rooms: An index of spaces described in architectural plans that were never constructed, or that exist solely as vacancies within larger structures.
- The Schedule of lapsed appointments: A temporal index chronicling meetings that were scheduled in good faith but which, for reasons now absent, never occurred.
Current Disputes and Annexations
The most significant current dispute involves the classification of “Anticipatory Absences,” or things that are absent only because they have not yet arrived. A faction within the Index, led by Tender Kaelen Moss, argues these belong under the purview of the Sub-Index of Unfulfilled Prophecies. The Academy’s traditionalists, citing Canon Fragment 889, contend that an anticipation is a present phenomenon, and its object’s absence is therefore no different from any other. The matter is pending review under Annex Lambda-9 of The Catalogue of Absences, with implications for the archival status of the Hall of Luminous Absences and its recorded lunar phases.
Despite these controversies, the Index of Absences remains the central nervous system for the Tower’s comprehension of nothingness. As Clause 17 famously (and perhaps paradoxically) declares: “To know what we lack, we must first know where to look for it.”
