Spire 44-Gamma

MS 3443.26 · Practices and doctrines

Spire 44-Gamma is a lateral administrative spire of the Gamma family, distinguished chiefly as the repository of Sub-Attic 12, in which the Ledger of Unrealized Events, Vol. 117 is stored under standing seal. Unlike the numbered spirals proper, Spire 44-Gamma was never assigned a founding cycle in the general register; the earliest entry in its fabric-log is dated only to "the winter following the winter of the survey," a formula the Sub-Department of Perpetual Registries has declined to resolve on three separate occasions.

The spire carries no ceremonial designation and has resisted all four attempts to confer one. It is nonetheless the administrative parent of a considerable estate, and its corridor warrants are among the most frequently cited in disputes over inherited jurisdiction in the Gamma Quadrant.

Fabric and situation

Spire 44-Gamma is joined at its western aspect to Iron Catwalk Gamma-7, whose terminus communicates with the main Western Spire stack and thus, by way of Sub-Level 44, with the broader Gamma network. The catwalk is single-width for its last forty metres, and the crossing register requires that parties ascending with laden barrows wait at the Delta landing. The spire has nine principal floors and one attic; only the attic is catalogued.

Its fabric is of the older bonded-stone pattern, undecorated above the third floor. The third-floor cornice bears a partial legend — "COMMISSIO—" — whose continuation was lost in the recension of Cycle 11,040 and never restored. The Metrological Spire has measured the height of the spire six times and returned six figures, the variance being attributed to the fabric's acknowledged tendency to settle during the hours of survey.

Sub-Attic 12 and the Ledger

Sub-Attic 12 occupies the whole of the spire's upper termination and is reached by a stair of thirty-nine steps, the last of which is a half-step requiring the visitor to descend. It holds Ledger of Unrealized Events, Vol. 117 upon a stand of blackened scaffolding, under the perpetual seal of the Office of Perpetual Affairs, which offices from the 17th-44th sub-floor of Administrative Spire Gamma. The volume records events which did not occur but were scheduled to, and is consulted only in respect of the scheduled hours themselves, never the events.

Access requires the countersignature of two Librarians, neither of whom may be the visitor's own countersigner, a rule introduced after the business of the Discrepancy of the Silent Bell in Spire 44, Gamma Wing. The rule has since been amended twice; the current form appears to forbid all visitation and is suspended in practice by a note pinned to the door in the hand of the Sub-Registrar, Ordan Vey, which reads "not to be read today." Visitors are asked to return the stand's dust-cloth to its hook.

The Boundary Dispute of Cycle 11,206

In Cycle 11,206 the Non-Consensus Spire advanced a claim that Spire 44-Gamma lay within its penumbral boundary, on the ground that the spire's attic cast no shadow at the hour of its survey. The claim was pressed at length before the Assessors of the Quadrant, who found in favour of the penumbra and were immediately reversed by Concordance 44-Gamma (the document, not the spire; the coincidence of numerals is noted in every index and explained in none).

"The shadow of a spire is not the spire. Should a spire cast none, the fault lies with the hour, not the boundary."

— Fourth Concordance, Annex 7, clause 3

The Seventeenth Concordance takes the contrary position, holding that a spire without shadow is "unbounded for all purposes," and has never been withdrawn. The Assessors' clerks resolve the conflict by citing whichever Concordance their client has not cited. Vey has recorded the dispute as "open, and likely to remain so until the Attic is moved."

Circulation and maintenance notes

The spire is served by a single lift of the old chain pattern, which stops at the fourth floor and will not stop there again until the chain is dressed, a works order outstanding since the winter of Cycle 11,391. Parties carrying sealed volumes are instructed to use the stair and to sign the crossing register at the Delta landing rather than at the Attic door, "since the door cannot be seen from the landing" (Warrant of the Gamma Corridors, clause 12).

The corridor lamps are trimmed on the ninth day of each cycle by a lamplighter whose name the fabric-log gives only as "the younger Ash." The register records that the lamplighter has not been asked about the Attic and should not be.

Status and competing accounts

The Status of Latent Amendments does not extend to Spire 44-Gamma, though the Custodial Spire for Recursive Amendments has twice proposed that it should, on the reasoning that a spire holding unrealized events is itself, in some measure, an unrealized thing. The proposal is in abeyance at Aperture Gamma and has generated two Latent Amendments of its own, neither of which has been read.

A minority school, drawing on the inventories of the Spirelocation Survey Team Gamma-12 and on certain inflections noted at Spiral76-Gamma, maintains that Spire 44-Gamma is not a spire but a corridor that has been mistaken for one since its first survey. The school points to the absence of a founding cycle and to the half-step. The Spire of Cartographic Echoes has mapped the structure seven times and returned seven spires; the seventh has an eighth floor. The question remains open, and the dust-cloth is to be returned to its hook.
