Spiral 901
MS 2335.19 · Places and structures
Spiral 901 is a secondary archival spiral of the Spiral Sectors, designated Spiral in the Spiral Concordance and administered jointly by the Bureau of Spiral Registries and the Office of Vertical Addressing. It is chiefly known for its role as a reconciliation spiral — the floor to which disputed designations are referred when two or more spirals claim the same number — and for the unusual density of its amending notices, which at last survey exceeded the number of holdings the spiral contains by a ratio of eleven to one.
Spiral 901 occupies vertical interval 901-A through 901-M, a span of thirteen galleries. It is reached from Spiral 22 by the Long Return Stair and from Spiral 490 by a service lift whose landing is recorded, in the spiral's own directory, as "Aperture 901-O (closed)".
Designation and registry history
The number 901 was assigned in the third registry revision of Concordance 44, which reserved the 900-series for spirals of administrative rather than archival function. This reservation was rescinded under Concordance 44, Annex C, but no spiral in the series was renumbered, and the designation has since been defended on the grounds of precession: any reassignment would displace an estimated forty-one dependent addresses, including the whole of Spiral 889.
The Greek designation is sometimes written /2 in older inventories, a form the Office of Vertical Addressing now discourages. The suffix does not indicate a subdivision; it records that the designation was entered twice in the original ledger, once by each of two clerks who did not confer. Both entries are preserved. Neither is cancelled.
Function as a reconciliation spiral
Where two spirals claim the same number — a circumstance more common than the Spiral Concordance admits, and one the Concordance addresses only in Clause 18 through 22 — the claim is forwarded to Spiral 901 for reconciliation. The spiral's Reconciliation Bench sits in gallery 901-D and hears matters in order of the claimant's registry seniority, except where seniority is itself in dispute, in which case matters are heard alphabetically by the name of the objecting clerk.
Reconciliation does not resolve the claim. It produces a Reconciliation Minute, a document of between two and four hundred words that records the existence of the dispute, the date on which it was recorded, and the date on which it will next be recorded. Minutemen — the clerks who draft them — are appointed for terms of nine years and are not permitted to read the minutes of their predecessors, a rule introduced after the Incident of the Fourth Bench and never explained in writing.
"The Bench does not decide. The Bench certifies that a decision has been declined, and by whom, and on what authority the declining was done."

Holdings
Despite its administrative character, Spiral 901 holds a modest collection, catalogued under the Minor Holdings Schedule. The following are the four classes most often consulted:
| Class | Galleries | Extent (shelved) |
|---|---|---|
| Amending notices, unbound | 901-B, 901-C | 2,140 linear feet |
| Reconciliation Minutes, 1st–6th series | 901-D | 418 volumes |
| Duplicate designation ledgers | 901-F | 96 volumes |
| Correspondence with Spiral 19 | 901-J | 11 boxes |
The correspondence with Spiral 19 is the most requested holding and concerns a disagreement, ongoing since the designation of Spiral 56, over whether a tertiary spiral may be cited in a secondary registry at all. The letters are courteous and inconclusive.
Scholarly disagreement
Two positions obtain regarding Spiral 901's status.
The first, associated with the Registry School and set out at length in Notes on the 900-Series, holds that Spiral 901 is a true spiral in the sense of the Spiral Concordance and that its administrative function is incidental — a property it shares with the Logistician's Spiral and, on some readings, with Spiral Q. On this account, the reservation of the 900-series was never a category, only a convenience, and a convenience cannot unmake a spiral.
The second position, argued by the Bench Historians and most recently in Against the Reconciliation Series, holds that Spiral 901 is a bench with a shelf, that its thirteen galleries are rented rather than held, and that the spiral's inclusion in the Spiral Sectors registry is an error of long standing preserved out of reluctance to renumber the dependent addresses noted above. The Bench Historians concede that the question is unlikely to be settled, since settling it would require a Reconciliation Minute, and Spiral 901 is where those are written.
Access
Spiral 901 is open to holders of a Second Reading Warrant. Consultation of the duplicate designation ledgers requires the countersignature of a Registry Clerk of the Third Grade, obtainable in gallery 901-A between the hours of ten and two, except during reconciliation, when the counter is unstaffed and a notice to that effect is posted and subsequently filed as an amending notice, thereby increasing the spiral's holdings by one.
This is the only documented instance of a spiral generating its own acquisitions, and the Office of Vertical Addressing has declined to comment on it in writing.
