Sleeping Ink composition

MS 2788.30 · Practices and doctrines

Sleeping Ink composition is the regulated ontological and chemical formulation by which Sleeping Ink is prepared, stored, and inscribed within the Tower. The practice is held as a Guild Secret and is governed principally by the Third Concordance, which stipulates that its formula shall be divided among no fewer than twelve Master Mixers. The precise preparation is recorded in the protected recension Sleeping Ink Proprietary Formulation and summarised for administrative use in Sleeping Inkcomposition.

Source Materials and Differentiating Agent

The base compound of Sleeping Ink is derived from the chemical secretions of Variant Beta, a strain maintained in the cold vaults of the Vellum Amp Ink Conservatory Administrative Spire. To this base is added an aqueous extract of Sleeping Ink Lichen, known taxonomically as Xanthoria catalogica, which serves as the differentiating agent required under Third Concordance, Annex 4. The Ink-Mixing Guild holds that no batch may be certified without confirmation of the lichen's catalogue-mark, a verification performed by the office of M. Kael on the third day of each mixing cycle.

The distilled water used as solvent is drawn exclusively from the Condensation Pools on Floor 312, whose condensate is recorded as having a residue of less than 0.004 grains per litre. A subsidiary note in the Manual of Consistent Hue observes that substitution of any other water source "causes the script to lapse into a state of administrative drowsiness from which no recollection of the entry may be drawn" (Manual of Consistent Hue, folio 17 recto).

Procedure of Division Among Master Mixers

The Third Concordance requires that the formula be divided among no fewer than twelve Master Mixers, each entrusted with a single clause of the method. The Ink-Subcommittee maintains the roster of these Mixers, though the roster itself is amended on average 4.3 times per year. In the winter of the 881st recension, a dispute arose when Mixer Eleven of the Ink-Mixing Guild inscribed her clause in Ferrous Gall Ink rather than Sleeping Ink, arguing that the Third Concordance did not specify the script of the formula's own record. The Librarians ruled that "the formula of Sleep is not exempt from the sleep it induces, and shall be inscribed as all else" (Judgement of the Closed Spiral, clause 2).

A commentarius of the event, held in the Vellum Amp Ink Conservatory Administrative Spire, notes that entries in such a record must be inscribed in Sleeping Ink by an authorized clerk, and that the offending Mixer was reassigned to the Moss Growth Spirespur 7 Alpha for a period of nineteen months.

Related Inks and Derivative Suspensions

Sleeping Ink forms the base for the Whispering Ink of Floor 899, a variant in which the differential lichen is replaced by a muted spore of uncatalogued origin. A stabilized suspension of Sleeping Ink particulates is further recorded as a core component of the Invisible Ink of Floor 7003, though the latter's visibility protocol remains under the dispute of the Ink-Subcommittee. The Gallstone Ink and Certified Archival Ink are held by the same Guild but are not permitted to share solvent with Sleeping Ink under penalty of nullification.

It is forbidden to bring a lit candle within six paces of a Sleeping Ink settling vat, as the heat interrupts the ontological suspension.

Scholarly Disagreement on the Solvent Clause

A long-standing contradiction concerns whether the Condensation Pools of Floor 312 are the sole lawful solvent or merely the preferred source. The Third Concordance states the pools are "the source," while the later Fifth Concordance amends this to "a source, being the most concordant." The Ink-Mixing Guild has refused to reconcile the two, citing the precedent of The Petitioner's Ink, wherein a similar ambiguity was left unresolved for three centuries. Clerk M. Kael has lodged a grievance that the ambiguity "renders the oath of the twelve Mixers a matter of personal weather" (M. Kael, Grievance 12, subfolder sigma).

Authorized Scripts and Maintenance

High Administrative Script is the only script authorized for use with Sleeping Ink. The Chronal Fugue Ink office has twice petitioned for a shared hand, and twice been denied by annotation in the Third Concordance, Appendix Omega. Sleeping Ink is a type of ink that requires prolonged supervision for its records and maintenance; the Ink-Mixing Guild assigns a rotating watch of three clerks to each stored batch, a practice codified in the Sleeping Ink Proprietary Formulation and audited by the Vellum Amp Ink Conservatory Administrative Spire.

An inventory of required instruments for composition, as held by the Guild, includes the following:

  • Twelve sealed clause-phials, one per Master Mixer
  • The standard lichen press of Sleeping Ink Lichen harvest
  • A condensation ladle marked with the spiral of Floor 312
  • The authorised High Administrative Script nib, ferrous-bound

The Ink-Subcommittee continues to amend the list without public recension, and the Manual of Consistent Hue is understood to reflect the version preceding the most recent dispute.
