Selvage Proposal

MS 2075.44 · Practices and doctrines

Selvage Proposal refers to one of at least three distinct, and often conflated, proposals submitted to the Librarian review committees concerning the formalization, application, or measurement of selvage. The term, lacking a unique archival identifier, has become a source of significant procedural and historical confusion, necessitating careful contextual disambiguation.

Primary Attributed Proposals

Archival reconstruction suggests the following are the primary documents historically grouped under the "Selvage Proposal" designation.

  • The Selvage Gradient Proposal (Circa Y190): Formally recorded as Proposal for the Active Stabilization of Architectural Junctures via Measured Material Gradients, this work is most strongly associated with the advocacy of M. Thaddeus Selvage. It argued for the intentional application of the Selvage Constant not as a passive metric, but as a directive for weaving transitional fabrics with deliberately varied integrity to absorb structural stress. This technique, later standardized, became known as the Selvage Gradient. The proposal was initially contested by the Weavers' Guild on grounds of "unnecessary complexity," but was ultimately ratified under Emergency Protocol Theta following the partial delamination of the West Spiral Aperture in Y192.
  • The Proposal for the Register of Focused Textiles (Y205): Authored by M. Selvage, this document contended that the prevailing Selvage Decimal System was insufficient for cataloguing textiles subjected to extreme directional force, or 'vectorial pressure'. It called for a separate registry using a logarithmic scale of 'focus', a concept that was never fully operationalized and was eventually subsumed into Annex Γ of the Selvage Protocol.
  • The Synthetic Resonance Proposal (Y227): Advanced by Hieronymous Selvage, this was a theoretical extension of Echo Theory. It postulated that under conditions of reverse polarity, a state of Synthetic Melancholy could generate a tertiary, synthetic resonance within a selvage boundary. The proposal was notable for generalizing the concept of selvage from textiles to architectural space itself, leading to the revised formula for the Selvage Constant used today. It remains a heterodox view within acoustic cataloguing departments.

Administrative Confusion and Concordance

The lack of a unique identifier has led to numerous procedural entanglements. In Y241, a petition from the Department of Textile Verification cited "the Selvage Proposal" as justification for a budgetary increase. The request was initially denied by the Office of Fiscal Apportionment, which referenced a Y190 committee note dismissing the Gradient Proposal as "speculative." The Verification Department successfully appealed by presenting the ratified Y227 Synthetic Resonance Proposal, creating a precedent where denial based on one version could be overturned by citation of another.

This ambiguity was partially addressed, though not resolved, by Clause 44 of the Seventh Concordance, which states: "Any future proposal bearing a non-unique title common to prior submissions must, in its preamble, list and distinguish said prior submissions by their archival stamp or primary author." Compliance has been inconsistent, as the clause does not apply retroactively to the existing "Selvage Proposals."

Current Disputes and Referential Practice

Scholarly practice has diverged on how to reference these documents. The conservative school, led by the Archivists of the Third Selvage Repository, insists on using the full formal title or the author's name (e.g., "M. Thaddeus Selvage's Gradient Proposal"). The more utilitarian school, common among field stabilizers and weavers, uses contextual shorthand ("the Gradient Proposal," "the Resonance Proposal").

A persistent minority view, articulated in the marginalia of several copies of the Selvage Principle, argues that the three proposals are in fact fragmented sections of a single, lost master document submitted by a unified "Selvage Consortium." No archival evidence supports this theory, and it is generally dismissed as a narrative convenience. However, it was inadvertently given credence by the infamous Proposal PPC-44109-Δ, which spent 212 years being classified and, in one of its iterations, recommended the "consolidated re-submission of all prior Selvage-related proposals under a single identifier." The recommendation was never actioned.

Measurement Standardization

The enduring practical legacy of the proposals is found in contemporary measurement standards. The apparatus and methodology for taking selvage readings in both textiles and architectural mortar, as specified in Annex Δ of the Selvage Protocol, directly descend from the empirical calibration work outlined in M. Selvage's early textile-mechanical foundations and the architectural adaptations formalized by Hieronymous Selvage. The unit selvage (Sv) itself, while defined by the Constant, is applied according to gradients and tolerances first rigorously proposed in the Y190 document.
