Self-Transcribing Utterance
MS 5848.07 · Practices and doctrines
The Self-Transcribing Utterance is a spoken or mental query that generates its own complete, authoritative archival record upon being fully voiced or formed, independent of external scribal intervention. As articulated in the foundational case of In re: The Whispered Query of Archivist Vor (Log 7.7, Folio 12), it exists as both an ephemeral event and a permanent, self-authored document. This duality places it at the center of the doctrinal conflict between the Realist School and the Interpretivist Guilds, and subjects its handling to rigorous protocols.
Physical Manifestation & Substantive Derivation
Following a valid completion, the Utterance precipitates as a physical manuscript. The standard form is a single sheet of Nictitating Vellum, upon which the spoken words appear in the official Tower Standard Uncial script. The physical attributes of this manuscript—weight, fiber alignment, ink absorption rate, spectral reflectance under Annex D-approved lumenstones—are cataloged exhaustively. According to the Manual of Substantive Derivation, these attributes are the utterance's substantive meaning, from which any textual content is considered an emergent, secondary property. A Realist assessor would, for example, derive more semantic weight from an utterance written with iron-gall ink (implying permanence and legal gravity) than from an identical phrase rendered in common sepia.
Protocols for Recognition & Containment
Determining whether an utterance is self-transcribing, or merely a standard query, falls to the Office of Volitional Assessment. Their Seven-Point Inquisitorial Protocol examines intent, syntactic completeness, and the speaker's awareness of the Self-Referential Proviso. The critical juncture is the "Stem Stage," where the utterance is either validated as self-transcribing or allowed to dissipate. Validation requires an audible, complete statement as per the implicit mandate of the Sixth Concordance; near-complete or internally contradictory utterances are logged by the Seventh-Spiral Registry in its restricted sub-register for incidents of near-utterance. The Clerk of Perpetual Pending is responsible for transcribing any non-qualifying fragments into the Register of Standing Requests.
The Documentation Paradox
A significant ontological challenge arises from the requirement, under Chain-of-Custody Acknowledgment protocols, for a ritualized spoken acknowledgment at each formal transfer point of the Utterance-as-document. If the Custody Acknowledgment itself meets the criteria for a Self-Transcribing Utterance, it creates an infinite regress of documentation for a single physical folio. Standard procedure, as per Addendum Ω to the Seventh Concordance, requires the acknowledging clerk to mentally insert a deliberate stutter or employ a prescribed non-semantic filler sound ("um") to break syntactic completeness and avoid triggering a secondary transcription event. This practice is hotly contested by the Purists of the Department of Self-Aware Archives, who argue it contaminates the Custody Chain with volitional error.
Legal Status and the Self-Referential Proviso
“No instrument may serve as the sole evidence for its own validity, save in cases where the instrument defines the criteria for said validity.”
— The Self-Referential Proviso
The Self-Transcribing Utterance exists in a state of perpetual exception to standard archival law due to Clause XI of the Self-Referential Proviso. It is both the evidentiary document and the event that created it. This has led to the doctrine of "Recursive Anchoring," where a Utterance's legal force is derived not from an external seal but from its own internal consistency with the physical attributes cataloged during Substantive Derivation. A Utterance that, upon analysis, yields attributes contradictory to its textual claim (e.g., a vellum declaring itself "inalterable" but exhibiting high erasure-friendliness) is classified as a Self Contradictory Folio and remanded to the Department of Self-Erasing Ledgers for resolution.
Scholarly Disputes
The primary schism concerns ontology. The Realist School maintains the physical manuscript is primary. Conversely, the Mentalist Collegium argues the intent to utter is the true catalytic event, with the transcription being a mere side-effect; they cite cases where the vellum manifests microseconds before the sound waves reach a listener's ear. A further, more procedural dispute involves Self-Citation. If a Self-Transcribing Utterance cites its own future archival location (e.g., "This utterance, to be filed under Delta-77"), does that citation possess binding authority? The Fifth Concordance suggests it does, while a contradictory gloss in the Third Concordance Annex B states such citations represent "a hopeful navigational aid, not a contractual obligation upon the shelves." This remains unresolved, leaving archivists to rely on the principle of Concordantal Self-Application on a case-by-case basis.
