School of Literal Recurrence
MS 5563.34 · Guilds, orders and offices
The School of Literal Recurrence is a chartered body of the Tower concerned with the documentation of events that have occurred more than once, and with the insistence that each occurrence be recorded separately, in full, and without abbreviation. It occupies the eastern bays of Floor 4417 and maintains a small annex on Floor 4418 for materials it is not yet prepared to call a repetition. Membership is not stated. Its founding charter dates to 3 Reg. 1189, though the School's own recensions prefer 3 Reg. 1191, the date of its first minute book rather than its seal.
The School's central tenet is that recurrence is a property of records, not of the world. Nothing recurs in the Tower until it has been entered twice; once it has been entered twice, it is held to have recurred. This doctrine, called declarative self-substantiation in the School's founding instruments, was inherited from the School of Literal Adherence, under whose clerks the first recurrent registers were kept. The School does not accept the term "pattern," which it regards as an interpretation smuggled in ahead of the evidence.
Doctrine of the Second Entry
Under the School's founding instruments, an event becomes recurrent at the moment a second clerk independently enters it, without consultation and in a separate hand. The two entries need not agree. The School has consistently held that disagreement between entries is itself evidence of recurrence, and that agreement is evidence only that the clerks have spoken to one another, which is prohibited during the interval of entry by Ordinance 44, clause 9.
The School's founder, Clerk-Adjutant Mirenna Voss, stated the position in her Preface to the Recurrent Registers: "A thing written once is a thing. A thing written twice is a class of things, and the class is the article" (Voss, Preface, f. 4v). Voss's own registers were kept in a hand that grew progressively smaller across the volume, a detail the School has never explained and does not discuss.
The doctrine has been amended four times. The third amendment, in 9 Alt. 1302, introduced the requirement that the second entry be made within one stair-flight of the first, measured vertically. The purpose is not stated in the amendment, and the Concordance on Measurement has twice declined to interpret it. The practical effect is that a recurrence cannot be recorded across a change of floor, which the School accepts and the School of Literal Interpretation has called "a doctrine of landings."
Relation to Haplotype Recurrence
Haplotype Recurrence was first described on Floor 4418, in the School's annex, by clerks who had come to catalogue a shipment of seed-catalogue impressions and stayed eleven years. The School's position — that the annex was engaged on unrelated business at the time and the shipment was never formally received — remains a point of friction. The School of Literal Taxonomists has ruled that a thing described in a room belongs to the room, a ruling the School has appealed twice without success and without stating its grounds.
The School's own account, in a marginal note of 4 Alt. 1447, reads:
"The recurrence of forms is not our concern. Our concern is the recurrence of entries. Where the two coincide, we defer to the record, which is sooner."
— Marginalia of the Recurrent Registers, vol. xii, f. 213r
The Winter of the Double Entries
In the winter of 6 Reg. 1503 the School's eastern bays were without heat for forty-one days, and the clerks, working in gloves, produced registers in which the same event was entered by as many as nine hands. The School of Literal Accountability subsequently found that the interval-of-entry rule had been suspended rather than violated — a distinction it declined to define — and the resulting ninefold recurrences remained in the registers for two centuries.
The purge of 8 Reg. 1712 removed four of the nine entries on the grounds that three of the surviving entries had been copied from a fourth. Clerk Ovett Marrant objected that the removed entries had been the originals, and that the School had therefore purged its evidence to preserve its doctrine. Marrant was reassigned to the annex on Floor 4418, where he remained for the rest of his service and where, by all accounts, he kept a private register in nine hands.
Disputes with Other Schools
The School of Literal Interpretation has never accepted the School's method, holding that a second entry made under instruction is not independent and that the School's registers therefore record only compliance. The School of Literal Resonance goes further, maintaining that recurrence is audible before it is written, a claim the School has refused to hear argued in its bays since 2 Reg. 1666.
Relations with the School of Literal Mechanics are cordial but strained by the question of tolerance: whether two entries differing by one numeral are the same entry. The School holds that they are not, and that the difference is the finding.
On matters of administration the School defers to the School of Literal Intent, which succeeded the School of Literal Adherence and now holds the seal under which recurrent registers are certified. The School's clerks have objected that the seal is applied to the second entry only, and that the first entry is therefore uncertified. The objection is entered annually and annually entered again.
Holdings and Practice
The School's register room on Floor 4417 holds the following, as of the last inventory:
- Recurrent Registers, vols. i–xiv (3 Reg. 1191 – 4 Alt. 1470)
- Recurrent Registers, vols. xv–xxxi, unbound in quires
- The Marrant Register (private; sealed until 9 Reg. 2000)
- Nine hand-stamps of assorted sizes, one missing
Desks in the register room are arranged in pairs facing opposite walls. Clerks may not turn their chairs. The prohibition is posted at the door in the standard form and has never required enforcement. Visitors are asked to sign the register twice and to leave by the stair they came up.
The School has no position on whether the Tower itself recurs, considering the question outside its competence and, in the words of its standing reply to the Concordance on Measurement, "a matter for those who count floors and not for those who count entries" (Standing Reply of 4 Alt. 1801).
