Ritual of Contained Veracity
MS 7538.85 · Practices and doctrines
The Ritual of Contained Veracity is the formal, practical application of the eponymous Principle of Contained Veracity for the purposes of candidate evaluation, specifically for the role of Ordinance Clarifier. It is a ceremonial examination wherein a candidate must analyze a set of intentionally contradictory texts—primarily drawn from the Tower's Concordance—and produce a singular, actionable interpretation that is demonstrably consistent with all explicit requirements of the documents in question.
A contradiction between ordinances is not an error in the law, but a locus of potentiality. The Clarifier’s task is not to choose, but to contain.
Procedure
The ritual is mandated by Ordinance 7, which defines the functional hierarchy for Scribes and establishes the evaluation standard for Clarifier candidates. It is administered by a panel of three Senior Clarifiers, observed by a neutral Archivist-Librarian. The candidate is presented with a sealed case containing no fewer than three contradictory documents. A canonical set, used for over seventy percent of examinations since the last amendment to Annex B, includes Ordinance 12.7.44 (pertaining to the spectral taxonomy of archived sounds) and the Ordinance of the Ambitant Aperture (governing the dimensional stability of doorways between non-sequential floors).
The candidate has one Tower-day (approximately 28 standard hours) to study the texts within a dedicated chamber lined with Harmonic Suppression Plates. They must then present a written interpretation, not exceeding five thousand words, followed by an oral defense. Success is contingent not on proving one document "correct," but on constructing a framework where all stipulated conditions are simultaneously true within a defined ontological scope—a demonstration of Simultaneous Veracity.
Philosophical Underpinnings
The ritual operationalizes the core axiom of the Principle of Contained Veracity: that truth is a function of consistent boundaries, not external correspondence. As such, it is deeply intertwined with the doctrines of Contained Realism and Referential Inertia. The candidate’s solution must create a stable, self-referential system where the contradictions are not resolved but rendered moot through careful contextual containment. This often involves invoking corollaries such as the Principle of Deferred Judgment or employing the protocols codified in Annex B of the Principle for verifying ontological stability.
The OVV's operational philosophy is grounded in this principle, and the ritual serves as its most rigorous test. A successful interpretation is said to "increase the structural integrity" of the Tower's legal and categorical edifice by adding a new, validated container for paradoxical information.
Outcome and Certification
Upon a majority decision by the panel, a successful candidate is issued a Certificate of Reconciled Veracity, which is permanently affixed to their personnel file and grants them the authority to issue binding clarifications. Failure results in a mandatory five-year apprenticeship within the Bureau of Material Veracity before a candidate may reapply. The precise text of the candidate's solution is archived in a subsidiary stack on Floor -12, where it may be cited in future Clarifications, creating a living, accretive body of interpretive law.
The ritual is distinct from, though philosophically related to, The Ritual of Periodic Verification, which assesses the ongoing stability of already-catalogued entities.
Scholarly Disputes
Significant debate exists within the Clarifier colleges regarding the ritual's fidelity to the original principle. The traditionalist school, led by the scholars of the Western Scriptorium, argues that the ritual's standardized document sets have become predictable, encouraging formulaic "container-building" rather than genuine conceptual innovation. They cite the continued use of the Ordinance 12.7.44/Ambitant Aperture pair as evidence of stagnation.
Conversely, the proceduralists of the Central Index maintain that consistency in examination is paramount to assessing a baseline competency. They argue that innovation is measured within the constraints of the known paradoxes, and that deviating into novel, untested contradictions would introduce an unacceptable variable, compromising the Principle of Ascent Against Current that serves as a primary bulwark for the Principle itself. This debate is currently documented in a circulating dissent to Concordance 891.α.17.
Historical Anomaly
The archive records one exceptional instance, dated 742-Δ, where a candidate presented an interpretation that was unanimously approved by the panel but which caused the designated examination chamber's Harmonic Suppression Plates to resonate at a frequency of 17.3 Hz for eleven minutes following the defense. The event was investigated by the OVV and attributed to a rare synergy of Referential Inertia, but the candidate's Certificate was not revoked. The solution text remains classified under Ordinance Ω.3 (Potential Hazards of Recursive Clarification).
