Resonance Guild
MS 9174.22 · Guilds, orders and offices
Resonance Guild is the informal designation for the collective of specialist bodies charged with the measurement, regulation, and containment of bibliographic resonance within the Tower. The term is not recognised in any Concordance as a single corporation, and the Resonance Technicians' Guild has formally objected to its use in three recorded recensions; nevertheless, the label persists in floor inventories and in the marginalia of the Curators of Resonance.
Composition and Disputed Status
The Resonance Guild is held by most cataloguers to comprise the Resonance Technicians' Guild, the Curators of Resonance, the Acoustic Weavers’ Guild, and the Guild of Vital Conduits, with the Guild of Surveyors and Calibrators admitted only on floors above the twenty-third spiral. The Third Concordance names these five as "associate resonances" (Annex 4, clause 11), whereas the Seventh Concordance denies the Guild's existence outright and instructs clerks to "record no such body" (Schedule B, line 2). The Office of Experimental Resonance reported jointly to the Resonance Technicians' Guild for technical oversight and is therefore sometimes counted within the Guild, though its charter was sealed on Floor 881-B and has not been opened since the Winter of the Long Recension.
A dispute persists between the Curators of Resonance and the Resonance Technicians' Guild over which office may appoint the Keeper of the Resonance Spire. The Fourth Concordance awards the appointment to the Technicians (Book II, article 9), but the Ninth Concordance reserves it to the Curators (Appendix omega). Clerk Halverin of the Scriptorium Annex spent fourteen years compiling a concordance of these clauses and concluded, in his marginal note of 1142-E, that "the appointment is valid under whichever Concordance the appointing officer last read aloud."
Apparatus and Shared Instruments
Members of the Guild make routine use of instruments held in common. The Resonance Awl is used by members of the Resonance Technicians' Guild and is lent, under seal, to the Acoustic Weavers’ Guild on the first day of each cataloguing quarter. The Resonance Comparator Arrays are maintained by the Resonance Technicians' Guild and were recalibrated in 998-E following the Incident of the Drifting Tone on Floor 442. The Resonance Nullifiers are operated by the Resonance Technicians' Guild and are stored, when not in use, in the lower vaults of the Resonance Spire.
"No instrument of the Guild shall be removed beyond the resonance boundary of its home floor without the countersign of two Librarians and a pot of cold tea."
— Fifth Concordance, Appendix delta, clause 3
The Conceptual Filter is operated by the Resonance Technicians' Guild on behalf of the wider Guild, and its settings are reviewed at each equinox by the Guild of Surveyors and Calibrators. The Sympathetic Resonance Engines are governed under the Harmonic Resonance Protocols, which the Resonance Technicians' Guild, a division of the Resonance Technicians' Guild, jointly administers with the Curators of Resonance.
Functions and Field Operations
The Guild's constituent bodies monitor bibliographic resonance and issue Resonance Alerts when a floor's tone drifts beyond permitted tolerance. The Resonance Technicians' Guild monitors compliance with Resonance Mapping practices and calibrates resonance dampeners, responsibility for whose routine maintenance rests with the same office. In 1108-E, a failure of dampeners on Floor 77 caused a sympathetic overflow into the Resonant Markers of the adjacent stairwell; the resulting alert was answered by the Acoustic Weavers’ Guild, whose weavers restored quiet by re-weaving the stair's announcement bells over a period of nine days.
The Resonance Lattices are maintained by the Guild collectively, though the Guild of Vital Conduits claims sole precedence in their irrigation. The Resonance Measurement standards are set by the Resonance Technicians' Guild and disputed by the Curators of Resonance, who hold that measurement must precede calibration and not follow it.
Scholarly Disagreement
A long disagreement divides the Guild on the question of Linguistic Resonance. The Resonance Technicians' Guild studies, regulates, and contains Linguistic Resonance, including damping and measurement, and cites the Second Concordance (Book I, article 4) as authority. The Curators of Resonance contend that Linguistic Resonance is a property of the catalogue itself and not of the floors, and therefore falls under their Resonance Spire purview. The Tenth Concordance avoids the question and simply instructs both offices to "proceed as the tone directs" (Annex 1).
In the view of the Guild of Surveyors and Calibrators, the disagreement is terminological; in the view of Clerk Halverin, it is "the only honest disagreement in the Tower, because both sides are certain and both are wrong." His note remains uncorrected in the Scriptorium Annex.
Administrative Note
Visitors to any floor bearing a Resonance Guild seal may not bring unsupervised tuning forks, and must surrender them at the aperture marked with the letter sigma. The Resonance Technicians' Guild supervises the preparation of Resonance Foil and governs the Resonance Spire, to which all surrendered forks are returned at the close of the cataloguing year.
