Purist School
MS 3288.39 · Practices and doctrines
The Purist School is the collective designation under which the Tower files those catalogical movements holding that a holding's form, sequence, or wording must be read without recourse to later commentary. The name was not adopted by the School itself. It appears first in a registry marginal note of the late 4th century, where an unnamed intake clerk entered "purists, several" against a shelf of disputed petitions; the shorthand hardened into a filing category and the category later acquired a doctrine.
Because "Purist School" is a filing convenience, it never acted as a single body. It federates at least three branches whose adherents disputed one another more vigorously than they disputed outsiders: the Taxonomic Purist School, which reads a holding's formal properties as its meaning; the Chronological Purist School, founded by Scribe Alaric of Spiral 412, which locates meaning in an entry's position within a sequence; and the Alpha Purists, who hold that a text's authority is settled by its earliest dating regardless of sequence. All three cite the Purist Manifesto of Spiral 412 as a foundational document, and all three read Annex Δ differently. This arrangement is considered stable.
Origins
The School's immediate provocation was the Stairwell 44 Impasse of Year 278, when two deputations contesting the priority of The Concordances occupied the same landing and refused to yield precedence to one another. The impasse was resolved by the Concordance of the Landing, which established that precedence attaches to the text rather than to the reader — a doctrine both deputations accepted and neither understood identically. Scribe Alaric, present as a recording clerk, later developed the point into the chronological principle, and the Purist Scribes catalogue the Landing as the School's operative beginning.
The Traditionalist Bloc regards this account as an origin only in the plumbing sense: something began, but not a school. Its position paper, the Ninth Observation on Intellectual Continuity, asserts that purist reasoning predates the Landing by at least four generations and that Alaric "codified a habit of mind twin to the Tower itself" (Ninth Observation on Intellectual Continuity, § 14). The Foundationalist School has declined to arbitrate, noting that it does not adjudicate disputes about events it did not witness.
Relations with the Progressive Cartography School were adversarial from the outset, because the progressive position treats a text as a set of provisional markings awaiting revision, while the purist position treats revision itself as a later holding with no jurisdiction over the earlier. After the appointment of Archivist Sennova to the Office of Shelf Integrity, the two schools conducted a semi-official feud for eleven years over the status of marginalia in the Provisional Catalogue of the West Lifts. The feud was suspended, not resolved, when the Shelf Integrity office was relocated and the relevant shelves were renumbered.
Principles
The common purist commitment is that a holding refers to itself. Commentary is not evidence of meaning; it is a later holding, to be catalogued beside the first and never behind it. The branches diverge from this point because "refers to itself" is not self-explanatory.
The Taxonomic Purist School derives meaning from the formal properties articulated in the Taxonomy of Formal Properties, which is annex Δ to the Purist Manifesto of Spiral 412. The Chronological Purist School derives meaning from the principle of Chronological Precedence, under which the meaning of a catalogued entry is generated by its position within a sequence — with the notable qualification, vigorously maintained by the branch, that it conducts retrospective analysis only and rejects all projection. The School of Accumulated Intent is sometimes grouped with the purists and objects to the grouping: its practitioners hold that a text's later readers contribute to its meaning, which the purists regard as the precise error the School was founded to correct.
"The entry does not mean what has been said about it. The entry means what it is, and where it stands."
— Purist Manifesto of Spiral 412, Annex Δ, opening line
The doctrine of Textual Purity follows from this, though unevenly. The Literalist wing of the School insists that a holding be read only in its issuing recension; the main body permits consultation of later recensions but forbids citing them as clarification. Enforcement is left to the individual reader's conscience and to the occasional sharp note in a finding.
Governance and the field dispute
The School has no officers. Its coordinated acts are undertaken by whoever holds the relevant Concordance citation at the time, which has produced a recurrent dispute over the Field of Purist Attribution — the register of holdings admissible in a purist argument. The dispute is recursive: each branch argues that the register should be confined to holdings cited by named exercises of the School, and each branch treats its own exercises as named.
By the Third Concordance and Annex 4, the register must close at the date of the dispute, so that holdings issued after a dispute began cannot be entered into it. The Fifth Concordance provides that the register remains open until the closing argument, because the closing argument is where the dispute is assembled for judgment. Neither document mentions the other. In Year 391 the Office of Register noticed the conflict and attempted a reconciliation, the Fifth and Third Reconciliation, which was judged inadmissible by both branches on the ground that it was itself a later holding.
Practice has evolved around the deadlock. Exercising parties submit their citations in advance to the opposing party rather than to the Register, and the Register accepts a notice of receipt as sufficient. When a matter of Catalogue Bound Volume B-19 was resolved in Year 403, the two parties exchanged letters of citation over four winters; the Register was never formally aware of the dispute and recorded it only after a bystander's mention, under a heading the Register later declined to correct.
Objections and reply
The principal objection is that the School removes all evidence a reader may use without supplying anything to replace it. The Ontological School has pressed this point since the Symposium of Closed Questions, summarised in its formal response On Literal Compliance, which notes that a text's form and its sequence cannot be separated, and that the purists have therefore inherited the very distinction they oppose. The reply, attributed to Scribe Alaric and repeated without citation ever since, is that a holding misread is still a holding, whereas a commentary that displaces it is a loss.
The Delegation is Procedural controversy is frequently adduced against the purists, though the purists maintain it is an attack on the wrong party: the resolution, in their reading, was never about what the delegate meant but about how the delegation was recorded. On Literal Compliance concedes the point and argues that it is exactly the difficulty — that the School's strength is also its evasion.
In practice the School's most durable legacy is an access rule. Under the Concordance of the Landing, as amended, anyone consulting a purist holding must leave the reading counter in the condition in which they found it, including any crumbs. The amendment was drafted after a complaint from the Office of Shelf Integrity and has been cited by every branch without dispute, which some Archivists take as evidence that the School is more united than its register suggests.
