Protocol Gamma

MS 5778.55 · Documents and ordinances

Definition and scope

Protocol Gamma is a theoretical framework for procedural navigation concerned primarily with chronological drift: the tendency of archival subjects to arrive at a reference desk dated earlier than the shelf they were pulled from. It is the oldest of the still-cited navigation frameworks, predating Protocol Delta by an interval the Concordances do not agree on, and it remains the parent document of several annexes whose combined effect on daily cataloguing is considerable.

The framework is not itself a set of instructions. It is a way of describing why instructions are needed. Where Standard Operating Protocol 12-Alpha tells a clerk what to do at a shelf, Protocol Gamma tells a clerk why the shelf may not be where the ledger says it is.

Relation to Protocol Delta

Protocol Delta encompasses Protocol Gamma as one of several antecedent frameworks, a position ratified in the Ninth Concordance and disputed in the Tenth. The Tenth Concordance's dissenting annex argues that a framework which predates the concept of drift cannot be subsumed by a framework invented to correct it, and proposes instead that Delta be read as "an occasional consequence of Gamma under load." Neither reading has been withdrawn. In practice, clerks cite whichever annex settles the matter in front of them, which is the intended function of a Concordance and the reason they are amended more often than they are read.

Annexes and derivations

The Gamma family of documents is extensive. Annex Gamma-7 codifies Protocol Gamma-12, the parameter set governing atmospheric conditions around archival subjects — notably the 13°C and 22% humidity standard applied to Stacks 11-Gamma, and the 88 Hz continuous tone maintained at Spiral76-Gamma. Annex Gamma, Section VII enacted Protocol VII, the isolation procedure for a resonant signature first recorded in Section Gamma. Ordinance Gamma-7, Section 12(b) governs the labelling of subjects whose drift exceeds one fiscal quarter.

The naming overlap between Annex Gamma-7, Annex Gamma Section VII, and Ordinance Gamma-7 has produced centuries of miscitation. The Standing Committee on Citation ruled in Cycle 604 that the three are unrelated and that confusion between them constitutes clerical error rather than contradiction. The ruling is itself cited as Annex Gamma-7 approximately once a decade.

Chronological drift

Drift, as Protocol Gamma defines it, is not the movement of a subject through space but the desynchronization of a subject's recorded date from the date at which it becomes consultable. A volume shelved in Cycle 698 may, on retrieval, open to a page bearing a marginal note in a hand not employed until Cycle 731. The framework holds that such notes are not anachronistic — they were always there — and that the shelf simply arrived late.

This position has never sat comfortably with the Witness Ledger 44-Gamma compilers, who maintain a parallel chronology in which the note is a forgery and the shelf is innocent. Their ledger and the framework's official chronology have been reconciled four times; the fourth reconciliation is 190 pages long and does not conclude.

Notable applications

Protocol Gamma's most consequential application was in the aftermath of the Gamma-Delta Intersection Event of '73, where the framework's drift calculus was used to establish that Spiral 88-Gamma had been designated twice, in two different years, by two different offices, both of which existed. The settlement protocol accepted both designations and issued a third as a courtesy. The Room of Required Presence was later established under a Gamma-family ruling, requiring that at least one clerk be physically present in any stack whose contents are dated ahead of the room itself.

Less consequentially, the framework gave its name to the Gamma Aperture Incident and provided the theoretical vocabulary later used in the Incident at Spiral 899-Gamma, though by then the vocabulary had drifted as well, and the incident report cites a version of Protocol Gamma retired in Cycle 655.

Criticism

Critics — chiefly the Office of Straight Cataloguing — hold that Protocol Gamma explains drift by asserting that drift is expected, which they describe as "a weather report written by the rain." The Office's own alternative, drafted Cycle 718 and never adopted, would classify every drifted subject as a cataloguing defect and return it to Scriptorial Revision. A trial of this method on the Sands of Unmeaning was abandoned after three weeks when the revisions themselves began arriving out of order.

The framework's defenders counter that Protocol Gamma makes no claim to prevent drift, only to keep it legible. This is the position recorded in the current recension, which adds, without apparent irony, that the recension itself may be read out of order.
