Primacist
MS 4877.38 · Practices and doctrines
Primacist refers to a philosophical and administrative faction within the Tower, as well as to an individual who adheres to its tenets. Primacism posits that for any catalogued subject or architectural feature, there exists a single, fundamental, original iteration or "prime" instance, and that all subsequent manifestations are derivative copies of varying fidelity. The faction is most prominently associated with Kaelen Moss, Sub-Director of the Department of Marginalia.
Core Doctrines
The Primacist doctrine is articulated across several key principles. First is the Principle of Singular Provenance, which asserts that every object, concept, or space within the Tower—from a specific edition of the Eleventh Concordance to a particular step on a spiral staircase—can be traced back to one archetypal source. Second is the Doctrine of Degenerate Copies, which holds that replication, whether through scribal error, architectural imprecision, or conceptual drift, introduces corruption, making each copy less "real" than its predecessor. A third, more controversial tenet is the Hierarchy of Being, which suggests that the perceived reality of a thing within the Tower is directly proportional to its proximity to its prime instance.
Administrative Influence
Primacist philosophy has significantly influenced cataloguing standards and dispute resolution. Primacists advocate for exhaustive "provenance trails" in archival records and champion the practice of "source-tagging" even for ephemeral phenomena. This is evident in the detailed appendices attached to expedition reports, such as those from the Cartilaginous Expedition and the Cilice Expedition, which Primacist clerks insisted must document not just findings, but the exact point of first observation. The faction's influence is also seen in the Kaelen Filing Controversy, where Primacist-aligned archivists argued for a filing system based on presumed date-of-origin rather than thematic relevance.
In matters of governance, Primacists frequently cite concordances that support the authority of original texts, often leading to conflicts with rival interpretive schools. A notable example is the Dispute of the Misaligned Balustrade, where Primacists argued that only the balustrade's original, blueprint-aligned configuration held legal weight, rendering all subsequent repairs—and the ordinances authorizing them—inherently suspect.
Internal Schisms
Primacism is not a monolithic bloc. The most significant internal division is between the "Textual Primacists," who focus on the primacy of original documents and their clauses, and the "Architectural Primacists," who concern themselves with the foundational geometry and materials of the Tower itself. A radical subset of the latter, known pejoratively as "Spiral Primacists," held that the Spiral Staircase of Presumed Symmetry was the true fundamental unit from which all other stairs descend. This view was explicitly rejected by Amendatory Concordance 44, which stated that "the primacy of intention cannot be affixed to a mere passageway."
Furthermore, figures like Archivist-Legate Kaelen and Kaelen of the Subscript have historically advocated for a more moderate "Functional Primacism," which allows for the existence of "authorized derivatives" sanctioned by specific concordances, a stance that places them at odds with the purist views of Kaelen Moss.
Criticism and Counter-Movements
Primacism is opposed by several schools of thought. The most prominent are the Iterativists, who believe each iteration of a thing possesses its own ontological validity, and the Contextualists, who argue that a thing's meaning and reality are defined solely by its current relational position within the Tower's infinite catalogue. Critics argue that Primacist doctrine is fundamentally unworkable, as the location of any supposed "prime" instance is either lost to time, contradictory, or itself potentially a copy of something from a lower (or higher) floor. They point to phenomena like the Creeping Phosphor-Moss, a luminescent growth whose point of origin has been claimed by over seventy different floors, as evidence of the futility of establishing a singular provenance.
Practical opposition also arises from administrative pragmatists who note that strict Primacist protocols, if fully implemented, would bring all cataloguing and maintenance to a halt in a perpetual search for origins. The development of the Lumen-Moss Symbiotic Tincture, for instance, was nearly derailed by a decade-long Primacist inquiry into which variety of lumen-moss used in early experiments was the "true" ancestral strain.
Associated Artifacts and Practices
The faction is symbolically linked to the Kaelen Quill, a purportedly unbreakable nib said to have been used to draft the first concordance, and to the ceremonial title of Kaelen Serrad, historically granted to the keeper of original seals. The practice of "Primacist notation"—marking certain entries with a small sigma (σ) to indicate a subject of presumed primordial status—remains common in Marginalia Department ledgers, though its use is not sanctioned by any central concordance and is often ignored by other departments.
