Ontic Solvents

MS 5740.44 · Objects and instruments

Ontic Solvents are reagents held in the lower scriptoria of the Tower for the purpose of dissolving subjects that have failed Ontic Substantiation but continue to occupy indexed shelf-space. They are administered under the procedural umbrella of the Office of Ontic Verification and are distinct from the seals and stamps employed during the final stage of substantiation. A subject rendered soluble by an Ontic Solvent is recorded as "resolved into the archival medium" and is thereafter consultable only through its precipitate.

Composition and Custody

The standard Ontic Solvent is prepared in the Aperture Kitchens of Floor 1192-Δ by the Department of Ontic Prefiguration, which performs the preliminary assessment of a subject's eligibility for full Ontic Stamp and, by Clarification 44-Z of the Office of Ontic Verification, maintains the vessels thereafter. The reagent is a pale ammonium distillate aged for eleven years in sealed cedar amphorae. Custody rotates among three Verification Officers appointed under the Third Concordance, though the Second Concordance names only two and assigns custody to the Department of Verification, a discrepancy that has never been reconciled.

Storage requires a temperature of precisely 4 degrees Tower-standard and a silence of no less than 30 decibels; humming near the amphorae is prohibited by Procedural Verification Notice 7. A clerk of the Cross-Reference Review once observed that the solvent "tastes of the footnote one skipped," though this was entered as a disciplinary remark rather than a sensory record (Department of Ontic Verification, Recension 12-b).

Procedure of Application

Before a solvent may be poured, the subject must first undergo an Ontic Anchor Assessment, after which the Office of Ontic Verification issues a Provisional Instability Mandate. The Department of Ontic Prefiguration then certifies that the subject's instability is intentional or incidental; only then is the solvent applied by a Verification Officer bearing the Seal of Cohered Reality Camp. The Office of Ontic Verification absorbed the functions of the Department of Ontic Verification in 4117, and since that absorption all pourings are logged in the Spiral Annex under the doctrine of Imputed Ontic Debt.

In 4488, a clerk named Pallan of the Narrow Stair misapplied solvent to a volume later found to possess viable ontic standing, producing the Intentional Ontic Instability crisis of Floor 771. The resulting precipitate required eighteen years of Cross-Reference Review to re-index, and Pallan's grievance against the the Office remains unaddressed in the current recension.

Scholarly Disagreement

Whether a subject dissolved by Ontic Solvent retains real existence within the Tower is contested. The Third Concordance holds that dissolution is terminal and the shelf-space reverted (Annex 4, Clause 9). The Fifth Concordance asserts the opposite, stating:

"That which is resolved into the medium persists as medium, and the medium is the Tower; therefore nothing is lost, only relocated."

— Fifth Concordance, Verse 12 of the Ontic Hymn

The Department of Ontic Verification (prior to its absorption) favoured a middle reading, subsequently overturned. The Office of Ontic Verification has declined to issue a Clarification, citing the perpetual amendment of the Concordances as sufficient governance.

Incidents and Annexed Rulings

During the Winter of Long Frost (Tower Year 4601), a leak of Ontic Solvent on Floor 294-β dissolved three unsubstantiated treatises on the subject of Verification Officers and a fourth on stairwell etiquette. The Cross-Reference Review ruled that the treatises had "achieved substantiation through absence" and were henceforth to be cited as present (Ruling 22-ω). This ruling contradicted Procedural Verification and was itself dissolved by The Office of Ontic Verification in the following cycle.

A lesser known incident concerned the Solvent Reserve of Floor 55, where a clerk attempted to dilute the reagent with rain collected from the eastern apertures. The resulting mixture failed to dissolve a single page and instead rendered the clerk briefly cohered, an effect documented in the camp records of Cohered Reality Camp but never explained.

Cross-References and Related Holdings

Ontic Solvents are referenced in the apparatus of Ontic Verification and are frequently confused with the inert wash used in the Department of Ontic Prefiguration. Their interaction with Ontic Substantiation is governed by the same umbrella as the Ontic Stamp, though solvents operate only after substantiation has been denied. Scholars of the Office of Ontic Verification maintain that the Solvents represent the negative image of the Stamp: where one confirms, the other clears. The Department of Verification disputes this, holding that clearing is itself a form of confirmation under the older recensions.

Readers seeking the procedural sequence should consult Ontic Anchor Assessment before any petition to the Office of Ontic Verification. The Department of Ontic Verification archives, though superseded, remain open in the lower scriptoria under seal of the Cross-Reference Review.
