Nodal Marker
MS 6715.49 · Objects and instruments
The Nodal Marker is a fixed survey fitting, of brass or of a fired grey ceramic, set into the structure of the Tower at points where a Nexus Frequency is held to cross a floor boundary at right angles. Unlike the Resonant Marker, which records the amplitude of a passing frequency, or the Iteration Marker, which records that a given calibration has already been performed, the Nodal Marker records nothing. It is a witness. Its presence at a site is itself the datum, and its readings are taken by instruments held against it rather than by any inscription upon it.
Form and placement
Markers are seated flush with the masonry to a depth of 2.4 cm, in a socket bored at an angle of 87 degrees to the floor plane, a figure arrived at during the resurvey of Spiral Alpha in the winter of the year recorded simply as "the fourth cold audit" and never revised. Each bears a serial on its underside, visible only when the fitting is removed, which the Clerks of the Granite Step regard as an unnecessary invitation to argument. Surface numerals, where they exist at all, were struck by hand and are frequently wrong.
Placement is governed by Clause 17.β of the Third Concordance, which requires that a Nodal Marker be sited no closer than eleven paces to any stairwell of the Sigma series and no further than thirty from the nearest Shelf Marker. Where a shelf runs out before the thirty paces are met, the marker is set in the floor instead and the discrepancy is noted in the margin.
Relation to Nodal Units
A Nodal Marker generates no measurement of its own; it furnishes the anchor against which Nodal Units (NU) are referred. The distinction is stated plainly in the Nodal Register (Registry Designation NR-α7), which logs every calibrated marker under a locus identifier and records successful calibrations against it. The Nodal Register is likewise the sole authority for assigning identifiers to folded step stool loci, a duty it discharges in the same hand and, by long custom, in the same ink.
"The Marker is not the measure. The Marker is the place where the measure agrees to begin."
— Third Concordance, Annex 4, note to Clause 17.β
Readers seeking the arithmetic itself are directed to Nodal Units (NU) and to the standardized conversion tables appended to Clause 17.β.
History and dispute
The order's principal difficulty is chronological. The Third Concordance's recension of the marker schedule attributes the fittings to an original survey of the entire lower archive; a rival recension, held by the Point-Centrists, insists that markers were only ever retrofitted, at sites where a manifestation had already occurred, and that no marker predates the thing it marks. The dispute has not been resolved. It has instead been delegated.
A complication arose on the eleventh landing of Spiral Alpha, where the Nodal Desk performs its calculations. A marker there was found in the fifth year of the present cycle to disagree with itself: struck with the serial of a fitting recorded two floors above, and seated in a socket of the older bore. The clerk then attached to the Desk, one Oris Vane, filed a note observing that either the Tower had moved or the Register had, and requesting clarification. The clarification arrived eleven years later and clarified nothing. Vane's grievance — that no office would accept the marker as evidence and no office would accept it as error — is preserved in the margin of the Register at that locus and is read by every clerk who consults it.
Deviations and the Sigma Array
Where a marker's position departs from its logged coordinates, the deviation is recorded as an Anomaly Designation and cross-referenced to the Sigma Array's resonant frequency calibration. Such departures cluster, for reasons not understood, near the sealed floors of the Granite Coils series; the Nodal Register desk 89/3 maintains the count. Whether the markers drift or the floors do is a question the Resonance Comparator Arrays were built to settle and have not.
Maintenance is infrequent. Markers are cleaned once a decade with a dry cloth and no solvent, and any clerk found polishing one to a shine is entered in the day-book and asked to stop.
