Material or Notional Presentation
MS 0728.58 · Practices and doctrines
Material or Notional Presentation is an essential distinction within Tower jurisprudence, defining whether an action, object, or dispute is to be adjudicated based on its physical manifestation or its conceptual intent. The Doctrine of Substantial Formalism, extensively codified in the Twenty-Second Concordance, establishes that for archival purposes, presentation is inseparable from truth. However, practical governance requires determining which axis of presentation—Material or Notional—holds primacy in any given procedural instance.
Origins and Jurisprudential Foundation
The dichotomy is first explicitly referenced in Clause 7.4.α of the Seventh Concordance, which states: "A Petition enters the Record either by the weight of its substance or the clarity of its idea." Early precedent, notably in the ruling on Re: The Whispering Stairwell (Cycle 422), established that "substance" refers to Material Presentation—the physical form, measurable dimensions, and sensory properties of a thing. "Idea," conversely, was later refined by the Directorate of Notional Alignment to mean Notional Presentation—the abstract concept, intended function, or archival classification.
The primary authority for resolving conflicts between these modes is the Manual of Jurisprudential Ontology, which dedicates Chapter IX, "Modes of Being," to the topic. It outlines that a Notional Presentation claim must demonstrate "conceptual coherence and alignment with established notional categories," while a Material Presentation claim requires "verifiable physical metrics and conformity to Standard Floor Units."
Procedural Implications
The determination of presentation mode dictates the entire adjudication pathway. Material disputes are typically routed through the Department of Aperture Alignment for dimensional verification or the Office of Volumetric Integrity for assessments of Volumetric Anomalies. Notional disputes fall under the purview of the Directorate of Notional Alignment, which examines claims of conceptual misalignment, categorical drift, or lingering intent.
A classic example is the treatment of a disputed pillar. If argued as a Material Presentation, surveyors would measure its circumference, composition, and load-bearing capacity against Axiomatic Foundation schematics. If argued as a Notional Presentation, clerks would assess whether it functions conceptually as a "pillar" (a support), a "monolith" (a commemorative object), or perhaps a "silent sentinel" (a category of dormant guardian), referencing works like Algernon’s Folio for notional precedent.
The Crisis of Mixed Presentation
The most complex and contentious cases involve "Mixed Presentation," where an entity's material form and notional intent appear to conflict. Concordances offer contradictory guidance. The Fourteenth Concordance, Annex B, prioritizes Material Presentation "where physical harm to the archive is possible." Conversely, the Twenty-Second Concordance, under Substantial Formalism, often privileges the Notional, arguing that "the idea gives form to the stone."
Standard procedure, as per the Manual of Jurisprudential Ontology, requires a four-phase adjudication: Petition, Collation of evidence for both presentations, a ritual Presentation before a neutral chamber, and a binding Verdict. Matters deemed too paradoxical for standard chambers are transferred to the Atrium of Infinite Regress, particularly if the act of Comparison between the two presentations risks instigating an Infinite Regress of Comparison.
Ceremonial and Symbolic Applications
The distinction is ritualized in certain high-level Tower ceremonies. The presentation of the Sceptre of Deferred Measurement, for instance, is a symbolic assertion of Notional Presentation over Material, often used to invoke Status Alpha. This act formally transfers a matter into the custodianship of the Chamber of Deferred Judgement, effectively stating that its conceptual weight outweighs any current physical imperfections.
Similarly, the dispatch of Certified Final Surveyors following a Certificate of Final Form is a definitive shift to pure Material Presentation; the object is considered to have reached its final, immutable physical state, and all notional debates about its potential or intent are officially closed.
Ongoing Scholarly Disputes
The foremost unresolved debate concerns whether the distinction itself is Material or Notional. The Formalist School, led by exegetes of the Twenty-Second Concordance, argues the dichotomy is a Notional framework—a tool for thought. The Literalists, citing early Clerk manuals, insist it is a Material reality, evidenced by the physically separate filing cabinets used for Material and Notional dockets in the Central Stack.
A secondary dispute involves ephemera. The phenomenon of "Interrupted Declarations"—speech acts cut short—is generally treated as a Notional matter (judged by the intended complete statement). However, a minority school led by the Archivists of the Clockwork Aviary contends that the abrupt cessation of sound waves is a Material event with measurable acoustic properties, and thus should be catalogued accordingly. This debate remains unresolved, with cases currently handled on an ad-hoc basis pending a ruling from the Directorate of Notional Alignment.
