Logic-Sifters

Logic-Sifters are a specialized operational cadre within the Logic Guild, assigned to the classification and resolution of categorical errors discovered in the Tower’s lower numbered floors. Their primary function is to determine whether a given anomaly constitutes a genuine breach of archival logic, or if it is, in fact, a permissible manifestation of a higher-order principle such as Absorptive Theory, thus requiring its absorption into the official holdings.

Operational Mandate

The Logic-Sifter cadre was formally established by Amendment 7-Γ to the Manual of Sequential Interpretation, following the Containment Breach on Floor 113 (Salt-Weep Gallery) in 12.742. Their mandate is strictly procedural: they do not create, destroy, or relocate archival entities. Instead, they apply a standardized sequence of logical tests—the “Sift”—to assess an entity’s coherence with the Tower’s foundational axioms. The Sift is designed to distinguish between errors that threaten structural integrity and those that merely expand the catalogue’s descriptive boundaries.

Each Sift team consists of three members: a Primary Assessor (trained in the Axiom of Material Coherence), a Paradox Analyst (specializing in culinary paradoxes and temporal inconsistencies), and a Concordance Archivist (responsible for cross-referencing all relevant ordinances). Findings are recorded on Form LSR-44, submitted in triplicate to the Vestigial Logic Engine for final validation.

The Sifting Protocol

The protocol unfolds in seven stages, as outlined in Annex Delta of the Manual:

1. Initial Containment & Description: The entity is isolated, and its observable properties are catalogued without interpretation.
2. Axiomatic Compatibility Check: The entity is tested against the three pillars of archival logic: the Axiom of Material Coherence, the Valen Axiom, and the principles derived from the Third Concordance.
3. Precedential Analysis: The Bureau of Precedential Analysis is consulted for any historical record of a similar manifestation.
4. Absorptive Potential Evaluation: A determination is made as to whether the entity can be logically subsumed under an existing, broader categorical heading.
5. Contradiction Audit: The entity’s properties are checked for direct contradiction with any active, non-repealed clause in the Concordances.
6. Provisional Classification: The team assigns a provisional status: Error (E), Anomaly (A), or Novelty (N).
7. Recommendation: A final report recommends either eradication (for Errors), re-cataloguing (for Anomalies), or the creation of a new holding entry (for Novelties).

It is during Stage 4 that most disputes arise, as the criteria for “absorptive potential” are famously subjective and the subject of frequent Guild infighting.

Notable Interventions

The Perpetual Omelette (Floor 88, The Sculleries)

Initially flagged as a culinary paradox for its continuous state of being both fully cooked and raw, Logic-Sifters determined it was not an error but a valid expression of the “Principle of Culinary Stasis” implied—but never explicitly stated—in the Third Concordance. It was reclassified as Holding 88.45.21, “Omelette, Perpetual (Specimen).”

The Whispering Stairwell (Floor 202, North Spiral)

A section of staircase that recited obscure ordinances in reverse chronological order. Sifted as an Anomaly, it was absorbed under the existing category of “Communicative Architecture” and is now routinely used for training junior archivists in Concordance history.

The Vanishing Ink Incident (Floor 47, Scriptorium Minor)

Ink that described its own properties and then erased the description upon the description’s completion. Declared a Novelty, it led to the creation of the new meta-category “Autologous Inks” and the establishment of a dedicated sub-bureau for their study.

Controversies & Dissent

The work of Logic-Sifters is not without controversy. A schism exists within the Guild between “Purists,” who argue the Sift is too permissive and dilutes logical rigor, and “Expansionists,” who champion its role in the Tower’s organic growth. The Purists often cite the case of the “Axiom’s Nook” on Floor 309, a space that logically cannot exist according to the Valen Axiom, yet was sifted as a Novelty and catalogued. They claim this represents a failure of protocol, while Expansionists argue it demonstrates the protocol’s necessary flexibility.

Furthermore, the Vestigial Logic Engine has, on seventeen recorded occasions, overturned a Sifter team’s “Error” designation, reclassifying the entity as an “Anomaly” post-facto. This has led to accusations that the Sift is merely performative, and true authority resides with the automated bureau. The Logic Guild denies this, maintaining that the Engine’s role is one of “quality assurance,” not override.

Current Status

As of the last inventory cycle (14.918), there are fourteen active Logic-Sifter teams operating across Floors 1-500. Their findings directly influence amendments to the Concordances; roughly 12% of all amendments in the past century cite an LSR-44 form as their primary justification. A proposal to extend their mandate to the higher, named floors is currently under review by the Guild’s senior conclave, though it faces significant opposition from the curators of those regions, who view the Sift as a lower-floor concern.
