Librarians Works Amp Maintenance Guild
MS 0550.17 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Librarians' Works & Maintenance Guild (commonly contracted to Works & Ways) is the primary administrative body within the Tower responsible for the physical upkeep, environmental stability, and routine conservation of architectural and archival assets not covered by specialized offices. It operates under the authority of Third Concordance, Annex 12, but its functional directives are primarily enumerated in the Works & Ways codex.
Scope of Authority
The Guild's mandate encompasses all structural maintenance below the threshold of a Protocol Inquest. This includes, but is not limited to: the integrity of stairwells and landings; the climate control of repository floors; the application of proprietary conservation materials such as 'Dampcrete'; and the logistical management of material retention and disposition. Its jurisdiction is explicitly demarcated from that of the Department of Ambiance & Inclemency (which handles atmospheric anomalies) and the Custodians of Fluids & Flux (which governs liquid and gaseous circulations). A frequent point of scholarly contention arises from the overlap between Guild responsibilities and those of the Academy of Archival Protocol, particularly concerning the preservation of "conceptual integrity" versus "material substrate."
Organizational Structure
The Guild is divided into several semi-autonomous Offices. The Office of Works & Ways oversees general infrastructure and houses sub-bodies like the Validation & Synthesis Office. The Office of Acquisitions & Stasis handles the physical securing of new holdings, often operating in tandem with, but independently from, the Categorization & Cross-Referencing clerks. Field operations are conducted by Quiet-Clerks, accredited Guild members whose permanent stationing on a floor is a prerequisite for that floor to be designated a Secure Repository. The Guild's administrative seal, used to mark requisitioned spaces or approved work orders, is a complex sigil pressed into cerulean wax.
Notable Protocols and Tools
The Guild maintains and operates several key instruments of Tower upkeep. The Title VII Measurement & Demarcation apparatus, managed by the Office of Works & Ways, is used for calibrating spatial boundaries following a quarantine and buffering event. The aforementioned Works & Ways codex contains the specific verbal invocations required to activate certain conservation Amps. Disputes over the application of these protocols between the Guild, the Academy, and the Secretariat for Unwritten Protocols are the formal triggers for a Protocol Inquest.
Inter-Guild Relations
The Guild maintains necessary, if sometimes strained, working relationships with other Tower bodies. Coordination with the Stonemasons & Lapidaries Guild is required for any structural repair involving load-bearing walls or foundational plinths. Liaisons with the Guild of Groundskeepers are essential for managing the interstitial spaces between numbered floors. Its most historically complex relationship is with the cartographic guilds; while the Guild of Formal Cartographers relies on the Guild's surveys for its maps, the theoretical models produced by the Guild of Theoretical Cartography often propose architectural modifications that would fall to the Guild to implement, creating a cycle of proposal and logistical rebuttal.
Historical Development
Originally constituted as the Sub-Department of Works & Ways within the broader Librarianate, the body was granted full Guild status following the ratification of Clause 14 of the Concordance of Unfinished Works. This clause liberated it from direct oversight by archival theoreticians, allowing it to prioritize "material perpetuity over notional purity." Some historians of Tower administration argue this separation led to the modern efficiency of maintenance operations; others, particularly within the Academy, contend it instituted a damaging dichotomy between the container and the contained. The Guild's current operational independence is considered absolute, though it remains bound by the overarching rulings of the Edicts & Directives and must accommodate the findings of any Protocol Inquest.
