Late Imperial Chiaroscuro Conservation Effort

The Late Imperial Chiaroscuro Conservation Effort was a cross-floor project, convened under warrant of the Seventeenth Concordance and dissolved after eleven cycles, to preserve a specific quality of shadow. It is generally treated by the archive as the last sustained institutional attempt to apply the principles of Late Imperial Chiaroscuro after the practice had been formally deprecated by the Fifth Concordance, and it remains the most-cited example of a Concordant body continuing to operate in a manner its own founding instrument had already forbidden.

The Effort is best known for the period during which the first officially recorded Root Shadow was catalogued in Spiral 7-Gamma, Void 12 — designated Event LS-45 in the register of the Office of Unstable Holdings.

Origins and warrant

The Effort was proposed in Cycle 206 by Senior Archivist M. Thaddeus Selvage, who had argued throughout the Grey Niche debates that only extreme contrast could represent the Tower's epistemological structure, and that a shadow which could not be measured at a right angle could not be said to have been catalogued at all. Selvage's memorial to the Librarians requested authority to identify, record, and where possible arrest the degradation of shadows conforming to the Ninety-Degree Shadow Rule then held in the collections of Floor 3011.

The warrant was granted with an amendment that has never been satisfactorily reconciled with the body of the text. Annex 7 of the Seventeenth Concordance authorises the preservation of "shadow of a determinate imperial character, however deprecated its governing doctrine," while Annex 9 of the same document states that "no office shall be maintained for the conservation of a practice struck from the guiding record." The Effort was constituted under Annex 7 and audited, for all eleven cycles of its existence, under Annex 9. Aris Thorne is recorded as having remarked of the arrangement that it was "a lamp with two switches and one filament" (Thorne, marginalia to the Seventeenth Concordance, fol. 44r).

Method

The Effort worked by what its field instructions called shadow-fixing: each degraded holding was re-illuminated from a single designated source, its cast shadow re-measured against the Ninety-Degree Shadow Rule, and the corrected angle entered in the Erg of Notation ledger alongside a note of the original error. The Manual of Authorized Depiction was carried on every survey as the working authority, notwithstanding its supersession, on the reasoning that a document codifying a practice is the only reliable record of what that practice looked like before it began to fade.

Shadow-fixing consumed notation at a rate the Effort never succeeded in defending. A single East-range folio required, by the Effort's own figures, between forty and ninety Ergs to stabilize, and the Cognitive Load Tax assessed on participating scribes was suspended twice by the Bureau of Measure and once — irregularly — by the Effort itself. The second suspension was later ruled void on the ground that the Effort had no standing to suspend a tax it did not administer.

Event LS-45 and the Root Shadow

The catalogue entry that made the Effort's reputation was made in Spiral 7-Gamma in the winter of Cycle 209. A Root Shadow — a shadow cast by no object in the collection, and therefore, under Imperial Taxonomy, not strictly a shadow at all — was recorded at an angle of 90 degrees to its illumination source, and thereafter could not be made to move when the source was moved. The survey team catalogued it in place, appended a note that the holding was "compliant and inmoving," and requested guidance.

Guidance arrived in the eleventh cycle, after the Effort had been dissolved. The Root Shadow remains on the register as Event LS-45 and is read annually by a keeper from the Archive, who confirms the angle and signs the folio.

Dispute over the standard applied

There is no scholarly agreement on which doctrine the Effort was in fact conserving. The Chiaroscuro School maintains that the Effort was a neo-classical enterprise in all but name, and that its shadow-fixing restored precisely the stark delineation required by the Fourth Concordance; on this reading the dissolution was a political act dressed as a procedural one. The Numerative school holds the opposite: that the Effort's ledger entries, which record original as well as corrected angles, constitute a graded record of shadow in everything but terminology, and that the Effort was quietly Numerative for its whole duration.

The Fifth Concordance is cited by both parties and settles nothing. Its deprecation of Late Imperial Chiaroscuro is generally read as retrospective, yet its reinstatement of "context-appropriate tonal range" is undated within the instrument, and the Concordance Recensions Office has declined four times to fix the order of the annexes. The Axiom of Conservation has been invoked on both sides, on the theory that a shadow once measured cannot be unmeasured, and therefore that the Effort's work either preserved everything or nothing.

Dissolution and holdings

The Effort was dissolved in Cycle 217. Its instruments, lamps, and measuring frames were returned to Floor 3011; its ledgers were not, and remain in the custody of the Office of Unstable Holdings, a transfer the Effort's last clerk, one Halvern Rees, protested in writing on the ground that the ledgers were "fixed at ninety and should not travel." Rees's protest is preserved, unanswered, in the office's correspondence bundle for that cycle. The measuring frames were returned with eleven lamps missing and one frame bent, which the receiving keeper noted without comment.

Surviving materials of the Effort comprise:

• two hundred and six shadow-fixing ledgers, Cycles 206–217;
• the Spiral 7-Gamma survey folios, including the LS-45 entry;
• four working copies of the Manual of Authorized Depiction, annotated;
• one bent measuring frame.

The Effort has not been reconvened. Requests to do so are routinely refused with reference to Annex 9, and just as routinely granted, on appeal, with reference to Annex 7.
