Lambda Shaft 33b
MS 5232.50 · Places and structures
Lambda Shaft 33b is a short, unmechanized access shaft situated at the junction of the Stones sector and the upper approach to Spiral 33-Gamma. It is 11.4 metres in clear vertical rise and 2.1 metres in internal diameter, and it exists principally to admit inspectors, air-samplers and the occasional hand-cart from the Lambda Shaft into the spiral proper. Under the schedule appended to the Ordinance of Vertical Access, it is registered as a tertiary ancillary shaft — a classification that carries no ventilation obligation and, its critics note, no maintenance budget either. Its designation is routinely miswritten as "Lambda Shaft 33-B" in the ledgers of Annex Lambda-9, an error the Registry of Vertical Designations has declined to correct on four separate occasions.
Construction and fabric
Lambda Shaft 33b was cut in the 3,118th year of the present reckoning, some forty-one years after the main Lambda Shaft was brought into service and eleven before the first fan-house was installed at Ventilation Shaft Theta. The shaft is dry-laid throughout: dressed limestone courses to 6.2 metres, then a rubble infill where the cutters met a seam of friable marl and, by the account of the works ledger, "proceeded with less ceremony". The upper landing is framed in salvaged rail-iron from the Western Light-Shaft refurbishment of the same decade, which accounts for the two mismatched handrails that appear in every survey drawing after 3,140.
Access is by ladder only. The ladder is fixed, iron-shod, and replaced at intervals of approximately nine years; the present example bears a stamped plate reading 33b / fourth fitting / 3,204. At the base, a cast threshold stone carries the only carved inscription in the shaft — a simple ordinal, "33b", cut in a hand that the Guild of Luminary-Menders has twice dated to different centuries.
Function
Because Lambda Shaft 33b provides access to Spiral 33-Gamma, it is often described in wayfinding tables as a "door" to that spiral, which overstates matters: the shaft delivers onto a service gallery, and the gallery in turn reaches the spiral's third landing by a further six metres of level passage. The distinction matters to the Atmospheric Integrity Guild, which has consistently refused to treat the gallery as part of the shaft for the purposes of airflow accounting. Air moves through 33b only incidentally, drawn by the pressure differential between the Aortic Shaft and Ventilation Shaft Theta that also supplies motive force to Shaft Lambda. Measurements taken in 3,193 recorded a mean draught of 0.4 metres per second at the mid-ladder station — sufficient to dry the walls, insufficient to be called ventilation.
The shaft's second function is documentary. Inspectors ascending from the Lambda Shaft are required to record the condition of the threshold stone, the ladder plate, and the marl seam in the shaft log, which is kept in a tin box on the upper landing. The log has not been removed from the box since 3,187. Three volumes are currently in use simultaneously, owing to a disagreement about which one is current.
The classification dispute
The status of Lambda Shaft 33b is contested between two instruments. The Fourth Concordance, clause 14(c), holds that any shaft under fifteen metres of rise is a fitting of the shaft it abuts, and therefore inherits that shaft's obligations and immunities. On this reading, 33b is a fitting of the Lambda Shaft and enjoys the protection of the latter's secondary classification. The Ninth Concordance, clause 3, holds the opposite: that a shaft with its own designation is a shaft in its own right, regardless of length, and must be assessed separately.
The practical consequence is insurance. If 33b is a fitting, its upkeep falls to the Lambda Shaft maintenance schedule; if it is a shaft, it falls to no schedule at all, since none has ever been drawn up for it. The Registry of Vertical Designations has adopted the Ninth Concordance in its published tables while continuing to bill maintenance under the Fourth — a position it describes as "provisional" and has held since 3,176.

Confusion with neighbouring shafts
Lambda Shaft 33b is frequently confused with Shaft Lambda, the mechanized service lift installed two centuries later to reach The East Unbound Stacks, and less frequently with Lambda Shaft itself — a primary conduit which, unlike 33b, is mechanized, ventilating, and the subject of a standing rivalry between the Atmospheric Integrity Guild and the Ordinance of Vertical Access survey office. Confusion is most acute in the inventories of the Stones sector, where clerks working from older plans have recorded 33b as a stair. It is not a stair. There has never been a stair.
The Lambda Coefficient, which governs pressure loss in short shafts, was derived in part from readings taken at 33b in 3,151 and is therefore not strictly applicable to shafts longer than twenty metres — a limitation its own preamble acknowledges and its users routinely ignore. Expeditions bound for Floor Lambda 909 have twice been dispatched through 33b on the assumption that it connected to the Service Shaft; both parties returned with inventories of the marl seam and no conclusions, as is customary.
Access and standing orders
The shaft is open to registered inspectors, air-samplers of the Atmospheric Integrity Guild, and holders of a Guild of Luminary-Menders lantern warrant. Descent is permitted at any hour; ascent requires the use of both hands and, by standing order of 3,198, the leaving of the log box open so that the next party may see at a glance whether it has been disturbed. The order has been observed without interruption and without evident purpose.
Proposals to mechanize Lambda Shaft 33b were tabled in 3,121, 3,158 and 3,201, and withdrawn on each occasion — the first for cost, the second for reasons not minuted, and the third because the shaft's classification was, and remains, unsettled. It is expected that a fourth proposal will be tabled before the end of the decade, and that it will be withdrawn.
