Impermanent Recordings
MS 3322.27 · Practices and doctrines
An impermanent recording is any archival object whose content is intrinsically unstable, degrading, or liable to spontaneous modification over time, independent of external duress. Their containment and study are governed by Clause 8.14.3 (Amended), which distinguishes them from mere storage vessels for unstable concepts by their inherent propensity for change. Cataloguing impermanent recordings requires a methodology that documents the process of decay as a primary attribute of the holding itself.
Taxonomic Classifications
The Department of Ephemeral Cataloguing maintains a provisional taxonomy for impermanent recordings, last updated under Ordinance 707-B. The primary categories are:
- Chronophagic Recordings: Objects that consume their own temporal context, resulting in the gradual erasure of content from the present moment backward. A typical specimen might, over a span of fifty-three hours, lose the final twenty percent of its recorded speech, then the middle forty percent, before finally dissolving the introductory passages.
- Context-Sensitive Palimpsests: Surfaces upon which new content manifests in response to the immediate environment of the reading room, such as humidity, ambient light spectra, or the unresolved emotional state of the nearest archivist. The original recording is considered the substrate for these emergent texts.
- Probability-Weighted Manifests: Documents, most commonly ledgers or lists, whose entries shift to reflect statistically plausible but unverified alternatives. A manifest of delivery receipts might alter supplier names and parcel weights to align with logistic patterns observed elsewhere in the Tower, without regard for factual accuracy.
- Echoic Imprints: Recordings that degrade not into silence or blankness, but into the resonant signature of another, unrelated recording held elsewhere. A noted example is the set of wax cylinders from Floor 333, which, over two centuries, have entirely resolved into the harmonic profile of a mineral formation from Floor 44.
Containment Protocols
Standard Memory Caskets are insufficient for long-term stabilization, as they are designed to hold unstable concepts, not self-modifying physical media. Protocol, per Annex Ω-2, mandates double encapsulation: the recording is first placed in a null-field resonator to dampen environmental triggers, then the resonator is sealed within a casket whose interior chronometric gauge is set to run in reverse. This creates a contested temporal gradient that, in theory, slows the recording's innate decay. The efficacy of this method is a subject of continuous study by the Subcommittee for Paradoxical Preservation.
The Schröder Dispute
A central scholarly controversy concerns the ontological status of the recordings. The Substantivist School, following Archivist Schröder's seminal (and itself partially degraded) treatise On the Objecthood of Decay, argues that the process of change isFixist School, endorsed by the Chief Librarian's office, holds that only the original, intended content at the moment of accession constitutes the holding, and all subsequent change is damage to be mitigated. This debate directly impacts cataloguing practices, budget allocations for preservation, and the legal status of exhibits that have fully transformed.
"To archive the fleeting is not to cage it, but to map the contours of its escape."
Notable Holdings
- The Lacrimose Codex (Floor 118)
- A book whose ink migrates across the page in response to acoustic pressure, forming new sentences when read aloud. Its containment chamber is maintained under strict silence.
- Series 9 Personnel Rosters (Central Registry)
- A classic example of probability-weighted manifests. The rosters for the fiscal year 712 consistently show a staff member named Elara Voss assigned to Spiral 9, despite no physical evidence of her employment, residence, or pension contributions ever being found.
- The Murmuring Foundations (Floor 600)
- Architectural plans for a nonexistent sub-basement, etched on slabs of sedimentary rock that flake away at a rate of 1.2 millimeters per decade, revealing what appear to be older, contradictory plans beneath.
Procedural Implications
The handling of impermanent recordings necessitates deviations from standard cataloguing procedure. Circulation Ledger Gamma requires that any retrieval of such a holding must be accompanied by a pre-reading baseline scan and a post-return degradation assessment. Furthermore, copies cannot be made, as the act of replication often transfers the impermanent quality to the duplicate, or worse, accelerates decay in the original. This creates a unique paradox within the Tower's mission: the most meticulously documented holdings are often those whose definitive content can never be fully known.
