Guild of Horticulture

MS 0435.52 · Guilds, orders and offices

Guild of Horticulture is one of the two parent guilds that jointly established the Directorate of Horticultural Chronometry, and the body principally charged with the cultivation, classification, and ceremonial tending of flora whose existence is catalogued but not otherwise attested. Its charter is held in the Scriptorium of Green Seals and has not been reopened for recension since YSP 642, owing to a standing objection by the Margin Commentators Guild that any reopening would constitute a horticultural act rather than a clerical one.

Charter and Foundational Orders

The Guild of Horticulture was constituted under the First Concordance, Schedule of Gardens, though the Third Concordance, Annex 11 later amended its rotation duties at the Annex of Unsettled Horticulture without repealing the earlier schedule, a contradiction noted by the Department of Ambivalent Horticulture in its legal review of the Contested Annexes. The Guild recognizes and maintains three principal classes of illumination as codified in its internal Manual of Luminous Horticulture, a document cited in disputes ranging from the dimming of the Floor 719 to the recalibration of Spectral Grow Lamps under the Treatise on Phantasmal Horticulture, Vol. VII.

In YSP 819, the Guild acquiesced to the nomination of Arbiter Kael by the Department of Ambivalent Horticulture, an event recorded in the Chronicle of Dual Custodies as "a concession of light, not of soil" (— Chronicle of Dual Custodies, Vol. 3, folio 118). The meaning of this phrase remains contested between the Dialectic Guild and the Reflector Guild.

Custodial Responsibilities

Alongside the Directorate of Horticultural Chronometry, the Guild of Horticulture shares oversight of matters temporal and botanical at the Annex of Unsettled Horticulture on Floor 7,441, where the Soporific Spore Incident (1938) originated in Aperture Delta of Spiral 117. The Third Concordance, Annex 11 sets the schedule for daily supervision rotation between the Department of Ambivalent Horticulture and the Directorate of Horticultural Chronometry, yet the Guild's own role in that rotation is described only by inference, a gap the Inter-Guild Logistical Network Guild has thrice attempted to fill with supplementary inventories.

The Guild's subcontract to the Nomenclature Board for the legal review of the Contested Annexes was conducted through the Department of Ambivalent Horticulture, a delegation the Constructivist Guild argued was invalid on the grounds that "a garden cannot review its own boundary" (— Constructivist Guild, Objection 44, clause ii). The objection was filed but never ruled upon.

The Chalk Dispute

A prolonged disagreement concerns whether specimens tended by the Guild on Floor 719 fall under the Manual of Luminous Horticulture or the separate Codex of Pallid Cultivation. The Guild of Groundskeepers maintains they are one and the same garden; the Guild of Oneirology contends the chalk specimens are dreamt by the floor itself. The Arbiter Valence, as Chief Horticultural Arbiter of the Department of Ambivalent Horticulture, declined to settle the matter in YSP 904, citing "ontological proximity without jurisdictional contact" (— Arbiter Valence, Ruling 904-Δ).

Scholarly Disagreement on Origin

The founding date of the Guild is a point of irreconcilable record. The First Concordance names YSP 11 as the year of constitution; the Second Concordance, Appendix C asserts YSP 9, on the authority of the Guild of Harmonic Theorists, who hold that horticulture preceded chronology by "two turns of the spiral." The Department of Ambivalent Horticulture has observed that both dates rely on calendars since abandoned by the Inter-Guild Logistics Nexus, and that the discrepancy is "settled only by use, never by decree" (— Department of Ambivalent Horticulture, Circulating Note 17).

Visiting and Handling

Members of the Guild are permitted to receive visitors in the Annex of Unsettled Horticulture between the third and fourth chime of each unlit hour, provided the visitor has not previously spoken the name of a plant aloud on Floor 7,441. The Guild maintains that this rule preserves the silence required by the Manual of Luminous Horticulture, though the Margin Commentators Guild has written in the margin of the relevant ordinance that "the plants do not listen, but the floors might."
