Glasshouse Vivarium

MS 6306.16 · Places and structures

Definition and jurisdiction

Glasshouse Vivarium is a compound designation appearing in Tower records since the ratification of the Third Concordance, used inconsistently to denote either (a) the glasshouse-adjacent annex of the Vivarium of Conditional Forms at Floor -12 (Sub-level Gamma), or (b) the cultivation suites administered under the Curatorial Council at Floor 741. The distinction has never been reconciled, and both offices continue to issue correspondence under the unqualified title.

The Floor -12 reading holds jurisdiction over specimens in conditional states, including those catalogued under Derivative Citizenship; the Floor 741 reading holds jurisdiction over living cultivable stock, most notably the collection surrounding Aeon's Bloom. Visitors are advised to confirm which of the two addresses their permit designates before ascending.

Physical description

The Floor -12 suite occupies 4,180 square metres beneath Sub-level Gamma and is sealed under Containment Protocol 7-Alpha. Its glazing is rated for internal pressure differentials of up to 12 kilopascals, a specification added after the winter of the Kael Incident, during which three bays were lost to condensate fracture. The corridor serving the eastern bays is maintained at a constant 11 °C; the door at the end of it is kept locked from the outside, and visitors are asked not to prop it open, as the specimens beyond it respond to unannounced atmospheric change by reclassifying themselves.

The Floor 741 glasshouse by contrast runs warm and wet, with a humidity floor of 78 percent year-round. Its roof panes are replaced on a rolling eleven-month cycle owing to mineral deposition from the adjacent spire runoff. Senior Cultivators retain unrestricted access to the Prime Glasshouse; junior staff must sign the day ledger at the north door.

Relation to the doctrine of antecedent forms

The theoretical underpinning of the Floor -12 operations is supplied by the Doctrine of Antecedent Forms, as codified in Concordance 708: On the Correction of Mistaken Forms. Under that Concordance, specimens whose current morphology is judged to be a deviation from an antecedent state are subject to "corrective feeding" — a phrase the Concordance defines only by example. The Lexicon of Conditional Phrases held in the suite's strongroom supplies the operative vocabulary; the current master edition is the fourth recension, and it is the only copy permitted to leave the floor.

The practical limits of the Conditional Existence Argument are tested here twice annually, in the presence of a notary from the Vault of Conditional Authority. Test results are recorded but not published; the Vault issues Tier-3 Epistemic Visas on the strength of them.

Custodial disputes

Ownership of the designation has been contested at least four times. The Ink-Mixing Guild asserted in 3:44 that glazing used in both facilities sourced from the same kiln at the Moss-Growth Spire, and therefore that the Guild held standing over maintenance schedules. The claim was rejected on the grounds that the kiln's records for the relevant period had been transferred to the Ink-Scriptorium Supply Line and could not be produced.

A second dispute, opened by an unnamed clerk of the Floor 741 ledger and preserved in the Second Concordance annex, concerned whether specimens demoted to Dormant Potential status at Floor -12 could be transferred to the warm suites for "reacclimatisation." The ruling permitted transfer but forbade reclassification on arrival, producing a population of entities that were warm, alive, and formally unreal. Their status remains under review.

"The glasshouse and the vivarium are not the same room, though both are glass, and both contain what has not decided."

— Fifth Concordance, Annex 9
