Floor 0: The Index

MS 0459.42 · Places and structures

Floor 0: The Index serves as the axiomatic predecessor of all subsequent floor-numbering systems within the Tower. Its primary function is categorically not to hold physical books, scrolls, or artifacts, but to document the procedural precedent for their absence. It is the administrative and metaphysical keystone from which all other indices derive their relative positions, codified under the Sympathetic Floor IndexAnnex 3, Clause 1.

Physical and Notional Topography

Unlike standard holdings, Floor 0 possesses no measurable vertical dimension and is described in the Frame-Within-Frame Corollary as "the plinth against which all other stacks are measured." It manifests as a perfectly circular atrium of indeterminate radius, bounded by featureless white walls. The floor surface is inscribed with a single, continuous spiral equation that begins at the periphery and terminates at a central null-point, known as the Aperture. This design is theorized to be a physical manifestation of the logical recursion inherent in a foundational index. The atmosphere is maintained at a constant 18°C with a humidity of precisely 45%, as mandated by Concordance 88-Σ for non-material archives.

Operational Mandate

The floor’s sole purpose is to contain and maintain the Grand Taxonomy of Unassigned Designations. This living document is an exhaustive, ever-expanding list of all floor numbers, shelf-markers, archival codes, and cross-reference tags that have been authorized for future use by the Central Index (Floor ) but have not yet been assigned to a physical location or recorded subject. Each entry includes the designation's provenance, its semantic weight-class, and a timestamp of its ratification. The Taxonomy is updated via pronouncements delivered through the Aperture by unseen clerks; these updates are immediately transcribed by the resident Index-Tender, whose sole duty is this reconciliation. A verified copy of each daily log is sent to the Master Index for cosmic alignment.

The Index-Tender of Floor 0

The position is occupied by a single, perpetually serving official known only as the Tender. Appointment is for a term of silence, interpreted as a lifetime commitment. The Tender lives in a small alcove recessed into the wall at the 270° mark of the circle. Their existence is monastic; supplies arrive via the same Aperture that delivers pronouncements. The most famous Tender, Elara of the Unbroken Line (served 4,102–4,201 by the Revolving Calendar), was noted for her thesis, “On the Implicit Volume of Zero,” which argued that the empty designations in the Taxonomy possess a latent informational density that subtly influences the structural integrity of adjacent floors, particularly Floor 22. Her work remains controversial.

Disputes and Anomalies

The floor’s status is perpetually contested. It is formally listed in the Index of Unresolved Imperatives under Obligation 0-0: “Determine whether Floor 0 is a floor, an index, or a presupposition.” This has led to several jurisdictional conflicts, notably with Floor 7,117, The Calibrated Atrium, which claims aesthetic precedence in circular design, and with the clerks of Floor 451, who periodically audit the Taxonomy for “conceptual leakage.” Furthermore, the Index of Irreconcilables contains seventeen separate petitions to reassign the designation “0” to a physical storage space for obsolete numbering systems, all of which have been tabled by the Central Index citing “existential precedent.”

Scholarly Interpretation

The dominant scholarly view, as per the Chelswick Doctrine, holds that Floor 0 is a necessary logical placeholder, a “syntactic ground” that allows the Tower’s architecture to cohere. A minority, revisionist school, led by the archivists of Floor 900, argues the opposite: that Floor 0 is, in fact, the only truly real floor, and all subsequent floors are elaborate, self-consistent fictions catalogued within its Taxonomy. This argument hinges on a disputed reading of Concordance 12-Γ, which references “the prime cataloguer.” All parties agree that the floor’s most significant output is not its document, but the quiet, perpetual hum—measured at 27 Hz—that emanates from its Aperture, which is used as the base tuning frequency for all index-calibration forks throughout the lower archival stacks.
