Eighth Spiral

MS 8943.16 · Places and structures

Definition

The Eighth Spiral is a stairwell of the Tower, catalogued as one of the numbered spirals descending through the mid-arithmetic floors. It is the subject of sustained administrative attention owing to its association with two separate instruments of governance: the Eighth Concordance, whose nomenclature it shares by convention rather than by derivation, and the Revised Eighth Concordance, which in Clause 4.1 assigns the Spiral a maintenance obligation it has never been observed to discharge.

The Spiral is recorded as beginning at an aperture on Floor 9007 — governed, per Eighth Concordance, Annex Γ — and terminating, per the survey of the Department of Noetic Cartography, at an aperture it does not reach. The discrepancy is a standing matter before the Office of Structural Metaphysics.

Physical description

The Eighth Spiral is a descending helix of cut stone, 4.2 metres in width at the tread and narrowing to 2.9 metres at the point where surveyors have historically stopped. Its balustrade carries an unbroken run of marginalia executed in a single hand; the Marginal Inscriptions Office dates this hand, on palaeographic grounds, to a period before the Seventh Concordance was drafted, a conclusion the Office has retracted twice and reasserted once.

Lighting is provided by clockwork lamplighters stationed at intervals of eleven turns. Three of the eight such stations are currently inoperative. Under Annex Δ.7 of the Eighth Concordance, the Reckoning of Stairs, the Spiral's audible step-count exceeds its recorded step-count by a margin of between four and nine treads per descent, a variance accepted as nominal.

Jurisdictional history

The Spiral's administrative ownership has been contested since the ratification of the Petition for a Eighth Concordance. The Ninety-Eighth Concordance asserts oversight of all features bearing the ordinal "eighth" within its purview, a claim the Forty Eighth Concordance rejects on the ground that ordinals are descriptors and not titles. The Thirty-Eighth Concordance has, in three separate clauses, attempted to settle the matter by amending language in the Revised Eighth Concordance; each amendment has been superseded by the following amendment.

The dispute is older than any clerk presently assigned to it. The Clerks of the Spiral, who hold custodial charge of the stairwell, record no memory of the beginning of the quarrel and express no expectation of its end.

"Where two instruments of the same number describe the same stair, the stair belongs to whichever instrument is longer."

— Eighth Concordance, Annex B, Clause 2

The Eighth Librarian's descent

The Eighth Librarian is recorded as having descended the Spiral in the winter of the Year of the Ninth Librarian, an entry logged by the Clerks of the Spiral alongside the final breath of the same office-holder. The purpose of the descent is not stated in the record. The Clerks note that the Librarian's lamps were lit for the occasion by hand, and that the third lamplighter station was extinguished during the descent and has not been relit.

A marginal note appended to the Clerks' ledger reads only: she counted going down, and did not count coming up. This note has been cited by the Department of Noetic Cartography in support of its position that the Spiral's true termination is below Floor 9007 rather than above it. The Office of Structural Metaphysics considers the inference unsound.

Scholarly disagreement

Two readings of the Spiral's status persist in the archive. The first, associated with the Preface to the Eighth Concordance, holds that the Spiral is a fixture of Floor 9007 and inherits Annex Γ's protections in full. The second, associated with the Vellum Galleries, holds that the Spiral is a passage between floors and is therefore not "on" any floor at all, but merely passes through them.

The distinction is not academic. Under the first reading, a visitor injured on the Spiral falls under the jurisdiction of Floor 9007's ordinance; under the second, no ordinance applies. The matter has been referred four times and remains open.

Visiting

Visitors are admitted to the first twenty turns of the Eighth Spiral without record. Beyond the twentieth turn, entry is by petition to the Clerks of the Spiral, who grant it at their discretion and without explanation. Carrying a lit lamp past the third station is prohibited; this prohibition is posted at the aperture and has been posted there, according to the lamplighters' log, for longer than the lamps have worked.
