Doctrine of Independent Invention
MS 9953.87 · Practices and doctrines
The Doctrine of Independent Invention is a principle of archival classification and liability management which holds that any document, artifact, or concept created within the Tower, which bears a superficial resemblance to a subject catalogued elsewhere, is to be considered a distinct and independent creation. Its authority is primarily derived from the Doctrine of Proximate Authority, as it falls under the purview of the Bureau of Registry's Office of Semantic Integrity.
Core Tenets
The Doctrine establishes three key operational premises. First, Resemblance is Not Derivation: similarity in name, form, or described function between two holdings is deemed coincidental and does not imply a causal or genealogical link. Second, Context Determines Ontology: the reality of an item is defined solely by the floor and catalogue series in which it is registered, not by any external analogue. Third, Liability Containment: by declaring inventions independent, the administrative responsibility for their behaviors, paradoxes, or recursive properties is confined to the originating department, preventing cascading accountability.
This is often summarized by the maxim, "A map drawn on the Ninth Floor is not a map of the Eighth, even if the ink is the same."
Application and Precedent
The Doctrine is most frequently invoked during Receipt and Triaging when a newly submitted item appears to duplicate an existing record. For example, the submission of "Specimen 881-7-B," a straw effigy displaying passive weeping rather than the mirrored aggressions of Specimen 881-7, was adjudicated under Independent Invention. Despite shared materials and a nearly identical accession number, they were registered as separate entities, with 881-7-B assigned to the Annex of Melancholic Agriculture.
Its principles also underpin the Doctrine of Coincidental Names, which addresses nominal overlaps specifically. The distinction is that Independent Invention covers the substance of the invention itself, while Coincidental Names governs the allocation of the identifying label.
The Transcendentalist Critique
The doctrine has been a persistent point of contention for the Transcendentalist Archivists and those who sympathize with the arguments of the Manifesto of Intrinsic Verity. They argue that Independent Invention is an administrative fiction that willfully ignores the palpable resonances and causal bleed-through between certain holdings. They cite instances like the synchronized tarnishing of all copper-based inkwells following the "invention" of a corrosive prayer on Floor Ξ-12 as evidence of a deeper, interconnected reality that the doctrine artificially severs.
"To declare two screaming gears from the same silent clock independent is not taxonomy; it is a refusal to hear the mechanism." – Marginalia attributed to Arlo Vex, in a copy of the Third Concordance.
Administrative Utility
Proponents, primarily within the Bureau of Registry, defend the doctrine as a necessary structural scaffold. Without it, they argue, every new manifestation of a common archetype—a self-filling inkwell, a corridor that lengthens when observed, a treatise on forgotten colors—would necessitate a full review of all prior manifestations, a task rendered impossible by the Doctrine of Incompletability. The Doctrine of Independent Invention allows the Tower's bureaucracy to function at scale by treating each floor's output as a closed, comprehensible system.
This utility is formally recognized in Ordinance 712-C, which states that "invention, for the purposes of cataloguing and custodianship, is an event without precedent, unless a precedent is explicitly and formally linked by cross-reference." The authority of this ordinance is itself derived through the Doctrine of Proximate Authority.
Notable Amendments and Disputes
The doctrine's application is not absolute. Amendment Gamma to Clause 5 of the Seventh Concordance creates an exception for "Deliberate Recursive Inventions," where a document's sole stated purpose is to comment upon or invalidate a prior holding. In such cases, a mandatory cross-reference is created, though the later document retains its independent accession number.
The most significant ongoing dispute concerns the Treatise on Perpendicular Time. The Bureau of Registry maintains it is an independent theoretical construct, while scholars of the Central Scriptorium argue it is merely a procedural elaboration of the administrative practices surrounding the Axis of Compliance, and thus not independently invented. The matter remains under Perpetual Review.
