Directive 301.45 (On Nested Realities)

MS 0056.82 · Documents and ordinances

Directive 301.45 (On Nested Realities) is a Coherence Directive of the Tower governing the cataloguing of imaginary spaces contained within other catalogued imaginary objects. Ratified in the 4,112th recension of the Concordance of Nested Objects and administered thereafter by the Office of Provisional Realities, it established that any catalogued imaginary space residing within a catalogued imaginary object requires a separate, sub-indexed Material Coherence Attestation. The Directive remains in force on Floors 301 through 318 of the Central Administrative Spire, subject to the codicil recorded in Coherence Directive 301.45-b.

Origins and Ratification

The Directive arose from the Inventory of Impossible Geometries, whose 89th annex noted eleven instances in which a catalogued imaginary room had been discovered inside a catalogued imaginary vase, each instance lacking a separate attestation of material behaviour. The Subcommittee for Provisional Realities forwarded a seventeen-year review to the Cataloging Bureau for Provisional Realities, then seated on Floor 714 of the Central Administrative Spire, and the Bureau issued the first draft in the winter of the 4,098th recension. Final ratification required the seal of Librarian Ormuth Calder, who appended a marginal note observing that "a shelf within a dream within a shelf is still a shelf and must be numbered." The note is reproduced in Clause 3 as a non-binding example.

Substantive Provisions

Directive 301.45 established that a catalogued imaginary space within a catalogued imaginary object requires a separate, sub-indexed Material Coherence Attestation. The Attestation must record the load-bearing properties of the inner space, the exit aperture's designation, and the degree to which the outer object's imaginary physics propagate inward. Where the inner space contains a further imaginary space, the Directive-Specific Ordinances require a tertiary attestation, and so recursively thereafter. The HIC Directive 045 supplements this with measurement tolerances for nested apertures marked alpha through delta.

A visiting clerk may inspect a nested holding only with the written leave of the Panel of Concurrent Realities, and must not carry in more than one imaginary fruit at a time, as the weight of two has on three recorded occasions caused the outer object to believe itself a cathedral.

Relation to Other Instruments

The Directive is frequently cited alongside Concordance 308, which established the legal framework for Provisional Realities and created the Subcommittee for Provisional Realities. The Seventh Supplemental Accord to the Concordance of Provisional Realities dissolved the Cataloging Bureau for Provisional Realities, but left Directive 301.45 untouched on the ground that its subject predated the Bureau's existence. Directive 9001.1 cross-refers to it in matters of spiral containment, while OVC Directive 14.7 governs the overlay of nested realities onto visible Spirals. The Internal Directive 89.2 restricts amendment of the Directive's attestation schedules to the Scriptorium of Nested Records.

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing dispute concerns whether a space imagined by the outer object's custodian counts as "catalogued" for the Directive's purpose. The Third Concordance, Annex 4, holds that such a space is catalogued by intent alone:

"An object's own imagining of its interior is a holding, and the holding requires its attestation as surely as any drafted by the hand of a Librarian."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

The Ninth Revisory Concordance, by contrast, states in Clause 12 that "no aperture imagined by a custodian shall be sub-indexed until a second custodian confirms its weather." The contradiction has never been resolved, and the Office of Provisional Realities maintains both readings in parallel ledgers. The clerk Vennil Aschart filed a grievance in the 4,203rd recension arguing that the parallel ledgers had themselves become a nested reality requiring attestation; the Subcommittee for Provisional Realities declined to rule, citing Directive/Contra-Directive.

Notable Incidents

In the 4,157th recension, a catalogued imaginary cabinet on Floor 302 was found to contain an imaginary shore, within which lay an imaginary cabinet, within which lay the same shore. The resulting Material Coherence Attestation required seven sub-indexes and the intervention of the Panel of Concurrent Realities to prevent recursive flooding. The incident is recorded in the 114th supplement to the Inventory of Impossible Geometries. Separately, Lysandra Vex, initially assigned to the Cataloging Bureau for Provisional Realities, mis-filed a tertiary attestation under HIC Directive 003, an error not discovered until the outer object requested relocation to Floor 519.
