Cycle 232
MS 2323.75 · Practices and doctrines
Cycle 232 is the Administrative Cycle provisionally succeeding Cycle 231 within the Central Chronology of the Tower, ratified on 3 Script by the Standard Temporal Commission and presently held in abeyance pending the resolution of the Kappa-Aperture Discrepancy. Unlike its predecessor, which spanned 717 standard Tower years, Cycle 232 has no ratified duration, a condition the Third Cataloguing Cycle protocols describe as "an open ledger awaiting its closing seal."
Establishment and Ratification
Cycle 232 was declared on 3 Script following the formal expiration of Cycle 231, the current Administrative Cycle overseen by the Standard Temporal Commission. The Sixth Recension of the Temporal Ordinances, Clause 12, states that "no cycle may be proclaimed until the preceding cycle's inventories are bound in the Annals of Applied Ephemera." The binding of Cycle 231's inventories was certified on 1 Script, two days prior to ratification, by the office of Curator Vael, who appended a marginal note reading "deferred by reason of unverified stairwells."
Scholarly disagreement persists as to whether Cycle 232 properly began at ratification or at the later sealing of the Aperture Cycle's 188th iteration. The First Concordance, Annex 9, holds that "succession follows the seal and not the proclamation," whereas the Fourth Concordance, Article 3, contradicts this with the plain statement that "the proclamation is the cycle." The Kappa-Aperture Discrepancy derives in part from this contradiction, as the Aperture Cycle and the Kappa Cycle observe incompatible successional rites.
Duration and the Problem of the Open Ledger
Each cycle under the Cycle is precisely 360 days in its minimal definition, though recorded cycles such as Cycle 8,442 extended for 2,311 standard Tower years and Cycle 12 encompassed 743. Cycle 232 has been assigned no terminal date. The Office of the Horizontal Scriptorium maintains that an unclosed cycle accumulates floor-time at a rate of one unnamed gallery per 14 Vellum observations, a measurement disputed by the Guild of Spiral Clerks, who cite the Compliance Audit of Cycle 345 as precedent for fixed enumeration.
"A cycle without term is not a cycle but a corridor; the Librarians walk it regardless."
— Curator Vael, marginalia to Cycle 12 Controversy, folio 44
Incidents of the Provisional Floor
During the 91st day of Cycle 232's provisional status, a clerk of the 14th Cycle recension identified an undocumented stairwell on Floor 17,003-Omega leading to a chamber already catalogued under Arsinoe Cycle holdings. The Third Cataloguing Cycle protocols, integrated into daily Librarian practice during the 14th Cycle, required immediate sequestration; the sequestration was performed with red wax and a length of unmarked twine. Visitors to Floor 17,003-Omega are asked not to pull the twine.
A further incident occurred on the 14th of Veilus, 891st Cycle anniversary observation, when the Standard Temporal Commission recorded a duplicate proclamation of Cycle 232 bearing the seal of the 126th Cycle annex. The duplicate was voided under Second Concordance, Clause 7, but not before three Librarians recorded conflicting inventories of the same non-existent subject.
Relationship to Prior and Nested Cycles
Cycle 232 is held to nest within the longer recensions of the Kappa Cycle and the Aperture Cycle, though the Kappa-Aperture Discrepancy leaves the nesting order unresolved. Daily operations continue under precedents set by the Kappa Cycle, as was true during Cycle 11, which formally closed on 14 Vellum preceding Cycle 12 and procedurally closed before the inauguration of the 7th Cycle of Rectification. The Cycle 13 ratification on 7 Script marked the end of Cycle 12 and is cited by the Office of the Horizontal Scriptorium as the nearest clean succession against which Cycle 232's irregularity is measured.
The Arsinoe Cycle and Cycle 230 are noted in adjacent concordances as the immediate forerunners of the current sequence, though neither bears on Cycle 232's open ledger beyond the marginal note of Curator Vael.
Scholarly Dispute and Present Status
The principal disagreement concerns whether Cycle 232 exists at all while held in abeyance. The Fifth Concordance, Appendix 2, asserts that "abeyance is a floor, not a void; the cycle is present therein." The Seventh Recension of the Temporal Ordinances, by contrast, declares that "no proclamation binds until the Kappa-Aperture Discrepancy is sealed." The Standard Temporal Commission has issued no ruling, citing the Compliance Audit of Cycle 345 as sufficient guidance for inaction.
| Cycle | Duration (standard Tower years) | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle 231 | 717 | Expired |
| Cycle 12 | 743 | Closed |
| Cycle 8,442 | 2,311 | Closed |
| Cycle 232 | unassigned | Abeyant |
As of the latest recension, Cycle 232 remains a provision without a term, a floor without a number, and a subject without a closing seal in the endless archive of the Tower.
