Custodial Guild of the Lower Pumps

MS 6112.52 · Guilds, orders and offices

Custodial Guild of the Lower Pumps is the deputised sub-ordinate of the Custodial Guild charged with custodial oversight of all Harmonic Pumps installed below Floor 612 and the interstitial descent shafts connecting them to the Lower Stacks. Established by recension of the Custodial Guild Charter in the 114th Custodial Year, the Guild of the Lower Pumps maintains its scriptorium on the unnumbered landing between Floors 588 and 589, where the Silent Cart is periodically sealed for audit.

Founding and Jurisdictional Grant

The Guild was constituted when the Custodial Directive 44.7. initiated the Expansion of the Lower Axial Stacks project, requiring a standing body to supervise pump-conveyance through newly provisioned shafts. The Custodial Guild Charter records that "the lower pumps shall be tended by a caste sworn to the Silent Cart and answerable to the Custodial Syndicate, lest conceptual tension pool beneath the stacks" (Clause 19, recension 114). The Guild of Harmonic Theorists objected that the grant overlapped its own mandate to define the stable neutral harmonic frequency output of Harmonic Pumps, but the objection was set aside by the Third Concordance, Annex 4, which held that custodial conveyance and harmonic definition were "distinct labours wrongly supposed congruent."

In the 121st Custodial Year, Tollen — already inducted into the Custodial Guild — was appointed First Keeper of the Lower Pumps, a post he held until the Winter Dispute of the 129th Year (see below). A deputised member of the Custodial Guild may apply for a Section E Certification permitting independent descent to pump-nodes without accompaniment by a Custodial Scribe Caste observer.

Apparatus and Custodial Practice

The Lower Pumps differ from standard installations in that they are required to prevent the onset of localized Harmonic Voids in shafts where the Guild of Conduit Tenders has reported recurrent aperture drift. The Harmonic Resonance Protocols codify the standard design of these pumps and dictate standard procedure for failing pumps; where a pump below Floor 612 fails, the Guild of the Lower Pumps is obliged to notify the Bureau of Guild Liaison Amp Compliance within three descents of the fault.

Conveyance of failed pump-components is performed exclusively by the Custodial Cart, operated under the Custodial Chain of custody. The Guild of Wall-Weavers has disputed the Guild's right to re-weave shaft linings around pump-mouths, a dispute referenced without resolution in the Schism of the Lower Stacks.

The Winter Dispute of the 129th Year

During the 129th Custodial Year, a pump on the landing below Floor 603 emitted a tone later measured at 0.4 delta below neutral. Tollen ordered the pump sealed; the Guild of Ontological Stability contended the seal violated Addendum 9 of the Harmonic Resonance Protocols. The Custodial Guild argues that Addendum 9 conflates archival science with speculative jurisprudence, and the matter was referred to the arbitral Custodial Syndicate. The Syndicate's ruling (Ruling 77-omega) found for Tollen but required the Guild of the Lower Pumps to maintain a duplicate tone-log in the Guild of Subterranean Scribes archive.

"No pump beneath the stacks shall be opened by one who has not tasted the dust of the Silent Cart."

— Custodial Guild Charter, Clause 22, recension 114

Disagreement over the Spiral Marking

Scholars dispute whether the Spiral Marking β-3, found etched at the base of Pump 41, denotes a custodial seal or a harmonic calibration. The Stonemasons Amp Lapidaries Guild asserts in its 88th recension that the marking is "a mason's record of settle," whereas the Guild of Horologists holds it to be "a timing-gauge for the pump's rest-cycle." The Third Concordance declares the marking custodial; the Second Concordance, Annex 7, declares it harmonic. Both Concordances remain in force.

Present Administration

The Guild of the Lower Pumps presently files, at intervals not exceeding one Custodial Quarter, for clarification with the arbitral Custodial Syndicate, continuing a practice the Custodial Guild has repeatedly observed. Its current Keeper, Vell of the Lower Shaft, was certified under Section E in the 141st Custodial Year. Visitors to the scriptorium are permitted only on the second descent of each prime-numbered day and must surrender all writing implements at the Silent Cart before entering the pump-records annexe.
