Curators of Residual Harmony

MS 1520.66 · Guilds, orders and offices

Curators of Residual Harmony are the custodial body seated in Sub-Basement Ξ charged with the stewardship of retracted contingencies and the documentation of harmonies that persist after their originating procedures have been formally withdrawn. The Curators of Residual Harmony derive no enumerated authority from the Curators Guild, a circumstance that has been noted without resolution by the Office of Precedential Harmony since Ruling of Precedent 8.Δ.

Seat and Composition

The Curators of Residual Harmony occupy the scriptorium of Sub-Basement Ξ, a floor reached by descending seventeen inconclusive stairwells from the Atrium Curators' receiving hall. Membership is recorded in the Roll of Withdrawn Hands, a ledger amended every third winter by the senior curator then present; the count has varied between four and nine since the roll's first recension in the year 1182 of the Third Concordance. The Curators of Residual Harmony have long contended, in a marginal note appended to The Residual Hypothesis, that the Phantom Accordion was a "retracted contingency" and therefore within their perpetual care.

"The Phantom Accordion, being neither performed nor unperformed, remains the property of those who ceased to summon it."

— Curators of Residual Harmony, Marginalia to The Residual Hypothesis, folio Ξ-12

Doctrine of Retracted Contingency

The central practice of the Curators of Residual Harmony is the sealing of procedures that were authorized and later withdrawn without ever having been executed. Such contingencies, the Curators hold, leave a residual harmony measurable by the Bureau of Metrological Harmony only through the SFU-D calculus. The Department of Metrical Harmony has disputed this measurement on six recorded occasions, most notably when the Chime of Contested Harmony tolled during an arbitration session governed by Acausal Harmony for reasons the Office of Acoustic and Noetic Harmony declined to reconcile.

The Delta Aperture Curators' Guild contested the Curators of Residual Harmony's claim to the apertures of Spiral 44, arguing that pressure harmony for the Delta network fell outside retraction. The Panel of Designative Harmony declined to number the chambers in which the dispute was heard, and the Committee of Procedural Harmony subsequently designated a fourth procedural stage that the Bureau of Procedural Harmony did not perform.

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing contradiction divides the Second Concordance from the Fifth Concordance on the question of whether residual harmonies may be re-catalogued by the Curators of Lacunae. The Second Concordance, Annex 9, states that "what is retracted shall not be re-entered by any curator of absence." The Fifth Concordance, Appendix Ω, counters that "residual matter belongs to the lacuna that remembers it." The Curators of Absent Spaces have filed a supplementary brief with the Office of Precedential Harmony, which has not been answered since the issuance of Edict 42- formalizing Acausal Harmony.

The Curators of Silence maintain that the residual harmony of Sub-Basement Ξ is in fact a silence misclassified; the Curators of Suspension and the Curators of the Still Air have each appended dissenting inventories. A visiting clerk may not, under the Ordinance of Quiet Footing clause 3, carry a tuned instrument past the third landing of Sub-Basement Ξ.

Notable Incidents

In the winter of 1407 of the Third Concordance, Curator Hethra of the Withdrawn Hands recorded a harmony persisting after the cancellation of the Office of the Commissioner for Procedural Harmony's sixth session. The Curators of Living Paradox disputed the reading, and the Curators of Resonance were summoned to strike the Chime of Contested Harmony; the resulting tone was judged by the Bureau of Metrological Harmony to fall outside the audible range established by the SFU-D calculus.

A further incident in 1561 involved the Guild of Latent Curators, who asserted that residual harmonies were latent rather than retracted. The Curators of Insubstantial Light submitted a sealed observation to the Atrium Curators, who forwarded it without comment to the Curators. The original seal has not been opened, in accordance with the First Recension of the Silent Annex.

Associated Holdings

The Curators of Residual Harmony are cross-referenced in the catalogues of the Curators of Anomalous Metrics, the Curators of Lacunae, and the Department of Metrical Harmony. Their ledger is stored beside the chimes of the Delta Aperture Curators' Guild under a concordance inscribed by the Panel of Designative Harmony and never publicly numbered.
