Corollary of Self-Containment
MS 9712.11 · Practices and doctrines
Corollary of Self-Containment is a procedural doctrine of the Tower whereby a document's authority is bounded absolutely by its material edges and cannot be augmented, diminished, or invalidated by reference to any other document, context, or external concordance. First recorded in the marginalia of Concordance VII and later codified by the Sub-Office of Corollary Evidence, it governs the isolation of catalogue entries from the interpretive drift of neighbouring holdings.
Origin and Early Recension
The Corollary of Self-Containment emerged from a dispute on Floor 1194-Beta, where the Department of Self-Aware Archives refused to amend a shelf-inventory after the Third Concordance was revised in the year of the Long Aperture (412th cycle of the lower scriptorium). Clerk Polvaren of the East Spiral argued that "a leaf's truth ends at its cut edge; to trim it by another's hand is to bind what was free." The phrase entered the recension as the founding statement of the Corollary, though Winters' Corollary subsequently generated a counter-corollary holding that Polvaren's leaf was in fact bound by the act of being read.
The earliest surviving copy is held in the Archive of Sealed Edges, a sub-annex of the Recursive School, and bears the seal of the Office of Material Boundaries. Its measurements are precise: 22.4 centimetres in height, 14.1 centimetres in width, and 0.3 centimetres of stacked folio at the spine.
Doctrinal Substance
The Corollary dictates that the authority of any catalogue entry, ordinance, or concordance is exhausted at its physical perimeter. A contradiction between Concordance XII and the Codicils of Containment does not, under the Corollary, lessen either; each remains fully valid within its own leaves. This principle is frequently invoked by the Curators of Living Paradox when preserving mutually exclusive holdings on the same floor without consolidation.
The Framewithinframe Corollary is held by the Sub-Office of Corollary Evidence to be a doctrinal complexity arising where a self-referential entry appears to contain itself; the Corollary of Self-Containment is cited there to argue that the inner frame's edges are distinct from the outer. Disagreement persists with the Theorem of Ontological Framing, which some Librarians read as subordinating edge-bound authority to framing context.
"No seal applied beyond the border of a page may lend or withdraw weight to the words within it; the page is a vessel that carries only its own water."
— Concordance VII, Annex 9, Clause 3
Disputes and Counter-Corollaries
Under Winters' Corollary, the act of invoking the Corollary of Self-Containment in evidence generates its own counter-corollary, namely that the invoking document imports the very external context the Corollary forbids. The Sub-Office of Corollary Evidence maintains the longest-running file on this interaction, dated to the 588th cycle, in which a clerk cited Self-Containment to isolate a record of the Kilgore Sequence and thereby produced a dispute still open under the Reconciliation Corollary.
The Corollary of Perpetual Activation is in dispute with Winters' Corollary on whether such counter-corollaries activate without cessation; the First Polian Corollary holds a narrower view, limiting activation to documents bearing the spiral mark of the Recursive Anchoring office. Visitors to the file-room are prohibited from bringing loose pages across the threshold, as the edges of a visitor's note have been ruled to contaminate the sealed folios.
Administrative Practice
The Department of Self-Aware Archives, charged with Custodianship, Regulation, and Verification & Containment under Concordance XII, applies the Corollary when verifying contained entries such as those under Containment of Active Degradation. Verification is performed by reading only the contained document and the Protocol 22-F sleeve in which it rests, without consultation of the Doctrine of Implicit Resolution or the Sigma Loop Doctrine.
In the year 731 of the upper stair, the Scriptorium of the Narrow Light attempted to annotate a Self-Contained holding with a cross-reference to the Vividness Corollary; the annotation was removed by order of the Keepers of the Cut Edge, who noted that "a margin is part of the page, but a neighbour's margin is not." The incident is recorded in the recension of Concordance XII, Annex 12.
Scholarly Disagreement
A standing disagreement concerns whether the Corollary applies to documents that have lost their edges through erosion. The Recursive School contends that a leaf worn to the centre retains full authority by the Corollary of Self-Containment, while the Curators of Living Paradox hold, citing the Codicils of the Eternal Imprint, that lost edges transfer authority to the Doctrine of Implicit Resolution. The Sub-Office of Corollary Evidence has declined to settle the matter, noting only that the dispute itself is bounded by the edges of its own file.
