Continualist

MS 6167.19 · Practices and doctrines

Continualist (adj.): An adherent of the principle of Undivided Chronal Flow. (n.): A member of the Guild of Exactitude faction that advocates for the abolition of discrete timekeeping units, most notably the Consensus Second.

The Continualist movement arose in the late 3rd Spiral as a philosophical and practical challenge to the Tower’s standardized temporal architecture. Its core tenet holds that time, as experienced within the Non-Euclidean Stacks, is an unbroken, fluid medium, and that its division into discrete, countable intervals is a violent abstraction that corrupts observation and memory. The movement’s most visible and controversial aim is the formal decommissioning of the Consensus Second as the Tower’s base unit of measure.

Philosophical Underpinnings

Continualist doctrine is built upon the Etheric Filament theory of chronal propagation, which posits that time does not “tick” but “unfurls” in a continuous, wave-like manner. Continualists argue that instruments like the Claudius Scale, which rely on discrete pendulum swings or resonant Null Quartz vibrations, do not measure time but instead impose an artificial grid upon it. This, they claim, leads to perceptual artifacts such as the feeling of “missing” a moment between seconds, and is a root cause of the Crisis of the Infinite Subdivision that periodically afflicts the lower administrative floors.

A key Continualist text, The Unmarked Hour, states: “To count is to murder the continuum. The archivist who records an event as having occurred at 14:03:17 has not captured a truth, but has committed a minute epistemological violence by shearing the event from the moments that bled into it and from those it bled into.” This perspective places Continualists in direct opposition to the Librarians’ administrative reliance on precise timestamps for catalogue entries and Concordance amendments.

Historical Development and Schisms

The movement coalesced within the Guild of Exactitude, initially as a niche study group auditing the chronal discrepancies observed during the calibration of the Prototypical Metre. Following the issuance of Edict of Inspection 7, which mandated synchronized timechecks across every floor, the Continualists organized into a formal faction. Their first major public action was the submission of a petition to the Office of the First Concordance calling for the replacement of “all discrete temporal measures” with a system of “flow-rates” and “chronal densities.” The petition was archived without comment under Clause 44(b) of the Ninth Concordance, pertaining to “frivolous metrological revisions.”

Internal schisms emerged, primarily between:

  • Absolute Continualists, who advocate for the complete dismantling of all clocks and the adoption of a purely experiential, event-based perception of time.
  • Instrumental Continualists, who accept the need for a pragmatic, if imperfect, coordinating mechanism, and propose the “Fluid Standard,” a device that measures the refractive index of Etheric Filaments to produce a smooth, analog readout of temporal flow.

The latter group’s proposal for a “Tower Mean Flow” is currently under theoretical review by the Guild’s Materials committee, pending the synthesis of a sufficiently stable Corinthian Alloy for the Fluid Standard’s core.

Opposition and Current Status

The Continualists face significant opposition from the established chronometric authorities. The Office of Consensus Measurement maintains that the Consensus Second is not a description of time, but a necessary administrative fiction, comparable to a floor number or a catalogue index. They argue that the Continuum, if it exists, is inherently ungovernable, and that the Tower’s operations require the “useful fiction” of discrete units. This view is tacitly supported by several key Concordances, particularly the Second Concordance (which enshrines the Second) and the Fourth Concordance (which mandates its use in all inter-floor communications).

Today, Continualist influence is most strongly felt on Floor 7,117 (often colloquially called “The Drift”), where several archival departments have experimentally adopted event-based logging. The movement’s legal status remains ambiguous; while no Concordance explicitly bans Continualist belief, Edict of Inspection 7 has been invoked on three occasions to confiscate prototype Fluid Standards on grounds of “creating non-conformant temporal data fields.” The Continualists continue to publish dissenting annotations to the Concordances and maintain a small but dedicated archive of phenomena they argue are inexplicable under a discrete-time model.

Related Concepts

Crisis of the Infinite Subdivision
The theoretical and occasionally practical breakdown that occurs when timekeeping attempts to resolve beyond a certain threshold, often cited by Continualists as proof of the failure of the discrete model.
Epochal Drift
A Continualist term for the observed phenomenon where two identical clocks, started in synchronization on the same floor, will gradually develop a discrepancy that does not conform to any predictable error pattern, attributed to local variances in chronal flow.
The Silent Concordance
A mythical, unwritten Concordance that some Absolute Continualists believe governs the true, undivided time of the Tower, which can only be perceived, not read.
