Contextual Reading

MS 7471.09 · Practices and doctrines

Contextual Reading is the regulated practice by which a subject catalogued in the Tower is consulted in accordance with its established framing, as determined by the Division of Contextual Anchoring (DCA) and the offices subordinate to the Directorate of Contextual Reconciliation. It is distinct from mere perusal in that it requires the reader to affirm the subject's Contextual Integrity before, during, and after the act of reading, on penalty of recension.

Origins and Early Recensions

The first explicit treatment of Contextual Reading appears in the Second Recension of the Reading Statutes (Floor 114-Ω, winter of the 3,902nd Index Year), which held that "a subject read outside its assigned framing shall be held to have propagated contrary to the The Axiom of Contextual Propagation." The School of Contextual Propagation disputed this, noting that its clerks had long used Contextual Anchoring without formal reading protocols. The matter was referred to the The Division of Contextual Anchoring, then a sub-office of the Directorate of Contextual Reconciliation, which issued the Bound Ruling on Open Volumes declaring that reading and anchoring were inseparable where Contextual Harmonization was pending.

Procedure and the Reading Alcoves

Contextual Reading is ordinarily conducted in the Reading Alcoves of a Floor's Reading Room, under a calibrated Reading Lamp. The Manual of Contextual Metrics defines in Schedule 2 the minimum Contextual Density Weighting required for a subject to be read without supervisory concordance. A clerk performing Contextual Reading must state the subject's frame aloud, per Third Concordance, Annex 4:

"No volume shall be opened without the reader naming the frame beneath which it is held; silence in this regard constitutes a breach of the Principle of Contextual Primacy."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

Failure to maintain the frame through the reading invites review by the Division of Contextual Anchoring (DCA), which may order remediation of a failed Contextual Harmonization. In the 4,117th Index Year, a clerk of the School of Contextual Propagation read the Vekian Antithesis of Contextual Cohesion without stating its frame and was subsequently assigned to Tier VII: Full Contextual Harmonization, jointly administered with the School of Contextual Propagation under the Directorate's standing order.

The Dispute of the Brass Keys

Contextual Reading figured centrally in The Dispute of the Brass Keys, wherein the Intentionalist School successfully argued for contextual meaning against a Materialist reading of certain brass-plated indices. The ruling affirmed that the Principle of Contextual Primacy governs all acts of Contextual Anchoring and thereby reading itself. The Materialist faction, later absorbed into the Contextual Purists, continued to maintain that the physical plate superseded the frame — a position the Division of Contextual Anchoring (DCA) rejected in the Seventh Marginal Note.

Scholarly Disagreement

A persistent contradiction arises between the Third Concordance and the Ninth Concordance on whether Contextual Reading may proceed where Contextual Integrity is provisional. The former permits reading under temporary seal; the latter forbids it absolutely. Halward Reeve, a clerk associated with a minority reading of the Vekian Antithesis of Contextual Cohesion, argued that the contradiction was resolved by the Vekian Continuity School he founded, which holds that provisional integrity is still integrity. The Directorate of Contextual Reconciliation has neither confirmed nor denied this, citing the Manual of Contextual Metrics as controlling where Schedule 2 is unambiguous.

Incidents and Floor Notes

On Floor 77-Delta, during the 4,388th Index Year, a winter storm compromised the Reading Lamp arrays and Contextual Reading was suspended for nineteen days; subjects due for review accumulated in the Reading Alcoves and were later found to have partially lost Contextual Integrity. The Division of Contextual Anchoring (DCA) attributed the loss to inadequate Contextual Delineation and imposed a reduced Contextual Density Weighting on all subsequent readings that season.

Visitors to Floor 77-Delta are prohibited from bringing unframed quotation slips into the Reading Room.

The The Axiom of Contextual Emergence is sometimes cited by the School of Contextual Propagation to justify spontaneous reading; the Directorate of Contextual Reconciliation has ruled this inapplicable where a subject has already been assigned a frame by the The Division of Contextual Anchoring.
