Conceptual Contagion
MS 8508.05 · Practices and doctrines
Conceptual Contagion (often abbreviated to C-Contagion or Class-Δ Infiltration) is the non-local propagation of a defined conceptual property or state between formally isolated holdings within the archival structure. It is distinguished from Conceptual Motility by its capacity to bypass recognized Conceptual Anchors and physical barriers, and from Conceptual Contamination by its self-replicating and often accelerating pattern of spread. The phenomenon is regulated as a Class-3 Epistemic Hazard under the Protocols for the Management of Dream-Space Incursions and Recursive Oneiric Contagion, though it predates the formalization of that directive.
The foundational legal definition is found in the Fifth Concordance, Amendment 12.8a, which stipulates contagion requires "demonstrated, non-attenuating propagation across at least three degrees of archival separation, irrespective of thematic or categorical adjacency." In practice, identification and containment fall under the joint purview of the Bureau of Conceptual Reconciliation's Hazard Mitigation Wing and the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild's Subcommittee on Epistemic Contagion.
Mechanisms of Transmission
Conceptual Contagion does not obey conventional spatial or informational channels. Primary transmission vectors, as catalogued by the BCR, include:
- Proximity-by-Concept: Holdings sharing a deep structural similarity (e.g., "themes of irrevocable loss" or "objects described as 'gleaming'") may form a resonant bridge, allowing a conceptual state to jump between physically distant shelves. The required similarity threshold is a matter of ongoing calibration.
- Metatextual Echo: The annotation, cross-reference, or even casual comparison of two holdings in an archivist's log can, under specific conditions of conceptual plenitude, forge a temporary conduit. The Epigraph Contagion of '73 was famously resolved by the Metatextual Division reclassifying all affected epigraphs as 'critical apparatus,' thereby severing the echo-chain.
- Recursive Buffer Failure: A failure in a Recursive Buffer Zone designed to isolate a volatile concept can lead to catastrophic, rapid dissemination. This is considered a critical infrastructural breach.
Measurement and Containment
The standard unit of measure for contagion spread is the Delta-Sigma (ΔΣ) index, representing the rate of new holdings exhibiting the invasive conceptual property per diurnal cycle. Containment protocols, outlined in Directive Somnia-Ω, Annex Γ, involve a multi-stage process:
- Diagnostic Quarantine: The affected zone, plus two concentric rings of adjacent holdings, is placed under conceptual stasis using Type C (Conceptual Suspension) fields.
- Vector Tracing: BCR auditors employ Conceptual Echo-Location to map the propagation pathways and identify the "Patient Zero" holding.
- Conceptual Sanitization: The invasive property is either excised via Large-Scale Conceptual Press or neutralized through controlled Conceptual Transubstantiation into a benign, inert form.
- Post-Contagion Zoning: The area is often subject to revised Conceptual Zoning ordinances to prevent recurrence, sometimes involving the installation of reinforced Conceptual Load-Bearing Walls.
Notable Outbreaks
- The Year of the Misshelved Codex (Floor 14,302 - "The Silent Stacks")
- A single miscatalogued treatise on "The Geometry of Melancholy" induced a persistent, low-grade sorrow in all holdings within a seven-floor radius. The contagion was only identified when auditors noted a statistically significant drop in productivity and a rise in minor-key humming among clerical staff. The emergency declaration under the Protocol was justified on grounds of epistemological contagion, setting a key precedent.
- The Spreading Glossolalia Incident (Annex Δ-7)
- A holding describing a "language of pure intent" caused adjacent texts to develop nonsensical but syntactically complex marginalia. The contagion propagated through footnotes, eventually affecting cataloguing terminals. It was contained by quarantining the entire concept of "auxiliary commentary" for a period of six months.
Scholarly Disputes
The ontological status of Conceptual Contagion remains debated. The Intrinsicist School, championed by figures like Archivist Vorin, argues contagion is not an external force but a latent, core quality of the original anomalous subject that merely "awakens" sympathetic resonances. The Vectorist School maintains contagion is a distinct environmental phenomenon, a kind of conceptual pathogen that exploits weaknesses in archival integrity. This debate directly impacts containment philosophy: Intrinsicists favor deep-source neutralization of the originating concept, while Vectorists advocate for stronger perimeter defenses and immunological conceptual infusions, as outlined in their interpretations of the Third Clarification on Non-Existent Affects.
A further, more bureaucratic dispute concerns jurisdiction. The Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild asserts authority over defining the legal boundaries of contagion, while the BCR's operational teams often make real-time judgements that necessarily precede formal rulings. This tension is typically mediated, imperfectly, by citation of the relevant, and often contradictory, Concordance amendments.
Relationship to Other Phenomena
Conceptual Contagion is often conflated with, but is formally distinct from:
- Conceptual Motility:]] The gradual, predictable drift of a concept within a defined Conceptual Locus or soil matrix. Motility is measured in Standard Conceptual Units (SCU), not ΔΣ indices.
- Conceptual Contamination:]] The accidental or incidental adhesion of one conceptual property to another, usually through physical contact or improper storage. Contamination lacks the self-sustaining reproductive capacity of contagion.
- Conceptual Infusion:]] A deliberate, controlled process to introduce a conceptual property, governed by strict permits and Conceptual Zoning laws. Infusion is to contagion as surgery is to infection.
