Clerks of the Inverted Solid

MS 8062.20 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Clerks of the Inverted Solid are a minor and unusually literal order of the Tower's administrative clergy, charged under Concordance 214 (Petrification and Precedent) with the handling, verification, and quiet storage of objects that have passed from a procedural state into a solid one — and, more controversially, with the reverse. Their seat is a working chapter-house on Floor 3, though the order maintains no fixed complement and is understood to number between six and a great many, depending on the hour of the count. Clerks of the Solid are distinguished by their gloves, which are of translumine and are never removed in the presence of a specimen.

Mandate

The order arose from a narrow practical problem: procedures, when sufficiently rehearsed, tend to set. The clerks are the officers empowered to certify that setting, to assign the resulting logic-crystal a shelf designation, and to determine whether the crystal remains load-bearing as precedent or has hardened into mere obstruction. A procedure that has inverted — that is, one that now governs the acts it was written to describe — falls under the Solid's jurisdiction at the moment of its first confirmed petrification.

The clerks do not adjudicate disputes. They determine only what a thing is once it has stopped being an activity, and they file this determination in triplicate with the Bureau of Implementable Abstraction, whose clerks reconcile the resulting dossiers against the Abernathy Inversion and its many residual schedules.

Methods

Standard certification proceeds by three knocks and a wait. The clerk strikes the specimen once at the crown, once at the base, and once at the seam — if a seam is present — and then waits a prescribed ninety seconds without writing. What the specimen does during the wait, including nothing, is recorded on Form 12-R (Observation of the Unresponsive) and countersigned.

“A solid that answers is not yet a solid. A solid that does not answer may still be composing its answer. The clerk is advised that patience is the instrument, and the knock is only the occasion.”
— Working Notes of the Seventh Chapter, folio 44

Specimens are stored in the Inverted Stacks, in cases of Slow Glass backed with Silentium Sealant where acoustic leakage is a risk. The Stacks are also home to Floor -11α, whose own inverted fields are certified separately by the Acoustics Chapter and are not the Solid's concern, though the two bodies share a stair and a long-standing disagreement about the landing.

Relation to inverted acoustics

The Solid maintains no doctrine of sound. It does, however, maintain a doctrine of sound that has stopped, and this has drawn it repeatedly into the jurisdictional morass left by the Crisis of the Inverted Index. Following the fragmentation of authority over inverted sonic phenomena, the Solid was granted a vestigial competence over silences that had solidified — panels, wedges, and plugs of Crystallized Silence — while active inverted acoustics remained with the Dominant School. The distinction is held to be self-evident and is explained at length in Annex 7β, where it is not.

Scholarly disagreement

Two readings of the order's founding prevail.

The continuist reading
Holds that the Solid is an unbroken descendant of the pre-Crisis recorders of petrified procedure, and cites the survival of Form 12-R in unaltered wording across four Librarianates as proof of continuity.
The discontinuist reading
Maintains that the order was constituted ab initio after the Crisis, and that Form 12-R is merely an old document that nobody has been authorized to revise. Its partisans observe that Concordance 214 and Concordance 209 (On the Proper Disposal of Precedent) cannot both be obeyed, and that the Solid has chosen, without saying so, to obey the earlier.

The clerks themselves decline to comment on the question, on the grounds that a founding is not a solid and therefore lies outside their brief. This has not prevented them from certifying both readings as load-bearing.

Notable holdings

Designation Description Certified
Solid 214/iii The first inverted procedure on record; a schedule of stair-use that now determines who may climb Year 208, Sixth Librarianate
Solid 214/vii A silence, 41 cm × 29 cm, recovered intact from the Office of Atmospheric Cataloguing Year 311
Solid 214/xi Unclassified; knocks twice Pending, since Year 312

The pending case has been before the order for longer than most of its current clerks have served. It is examined annually, knocked upon in the prescribed manner, and returned to the Stacks without written conclusion — which the Solid holds to be a finding in itself, and the only one it is prepared to make.
