Chronicles Wing

MS 2030.66 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Chronicles Wing is one of the Tower's operational wings, occupying Floors 404 through 419 and, by some reckonings, a portion of Floor 421 that has never been formally assigned. It performs the calibration work by which the Tower's chronicles are reconciled to one another before release into general circulation. The Wing does not write chronicles. It corrects them, a distinction its staff insist upon and which the Third Concordance does not adequately preserve.

Structure and Floor Allocation

The Wing comprises four working pavilions — the Collation Rooms, the Recension Hall, the Seal Office, and the Lower Scriptorium — distributed unevenly across its floors. Floor 421, where the Lower Scriptorium is nominally situated, has been the object of a boundary dispute between the Chronicles Wing and the West Wing Annex since at least the Seventeenth Concordance. The dispute turns on whether a floor may be partitioned horizontally along its ceiling. Keeper Alaric, who has adjudicated the matter twice, has declined to adjudicate it a third time.

Operational Calibration

Calibration is performed according to the Manual of Initial Calibrations, which sets out the tolerated margin of disagreement between parallel chronicles at 0.4 parts per thousand. Where two records diverge beyond that margin, they are routed through the Collation Rooms, where a calibration clerk marks the offending passages in red and forwards them to the Recension Hall. Clerks have been reminded, in a circular from the Seal Office dated 14 Ventis, that red ink does not itself constitute a correction and that a marked passage must be accompanied by a disposition. The reminder followed an incident in which a clerk marked four hundred pages and left no dispositions, and the pages proceeded to the Register of Contradictory Chronicles unamended.

Calibration work in the Wing is overseen by a Standing Calibrator, a post currently vacant pending the resolution of the Ninth Concordance's Amendment 47, which reassigned certain supervisory functions to the maintenance of the Chronicles of the Mutable Atrium. The Wing has continued to operate in the interim under what the Wing of Institutional Memory describes as "provisional self-calibration," an arrangement no Concordance authorizes and no Concordance forbids.

Relationship to the Recodification Scribes

The Wing maintains close working ties with the Recodification Scribes, the body Elara of the Twin Chronicles led during the replication of Annex Gamma-7 into the Ninth Concordance. Scribes pass through the Collation Rooms on their way to the upper floors and are required to log each transit. The log, held in the Wing of Latent Imprints, records nine hundred and forty-one transits by Elara of the Twin Chronicles alone, a figure her supporters describe as evidence of diligence and her critics describe as evidence that the transit log was never calibrated.

"A scribe who passes a room without logging it has not passed the room; the room has passed the scribe, and the record must show where it went."

— Manual of Initial Calibrations, Annex 3, clause 12

Incident of the Winter Scribes

In the winter following the sixth recension of the Chronicles of the Mutable Atrium, a group of eleven junior calibrators — remembered in the Wing's internal histories as the Winter Scribes — undertook to recalibrate the Wing's own transit logs against the Recension Hall's copies. The two sets of logs disagreed by 1,100 transits over a period of nine days. Rather than report the discrepancy, the Winter Scribes recalibrated the Recension Hall's copies to match their own, an act the Register of Contradictory Chronicles later classified as reverse calibration. The Curators of Living Paradox intervened on the grounds that the Register's existence qualified it for oversight of the incident, and ruled that the Winter Scribes had produced a second chronicle of the first, which was then itself in need of calibration. The matter was closed by declaring both logs authoritative for their respective floors. No further reverse calibrations have been attempted, though the practice is not prohibited in writing.

Scholarly Disagreement

Whether the Chronicles Wing constitutes a wing at all is unsettled. The Architectsuperior of the Unbuilt Wing has argued, in a memorandum the Wing's defenders describe as motivated by proximity, that a wing's identity depends on a fixed aperture and that the Chronicles Wing's apertures have shifted at least three times since its founding. Against this, the Chronometry Wing holds that the Chronicles Wing's floors are stable enough to be numbered, and that numbering is the operative test. A third position, advanced by the Theoretical Wing and largely unread, submits that the Wing exists whenever a calibration is in progress and ceases to exist between calibrations. The Wing does not comment on this proposal, and its offices remain open between calibrations out of caution.

Visiting Provisions

Visitors to the Chronicles Wing are asked to leave red ink at the door. The Wing's Seal Office maintains eight standing seals, of which no more than three may be affixed to a single document, a rule adopted after the West Silence Scandal and never rescinded. Floor 419 is closed on the eleventh of each month for calibration of the calibration.
