Chamber of Resonant Potential

MS 5356.35 · Places and structures

The Chamber of Resonant Potential is a recording and holding room on Floor 6,208 of the Librarian's Scriptorium, given over to the measurement, storage, and occasional discharge of potentials that have not yet resolved into declared resonance. It should not be confused with the Chamber of Potential Hydration on Floor 4,112, nor with the Chamber of Resonant Verity on Floor 7,491; the distinction is maintained by the Office of Potential Records, which has maintained it since the Concordance of Separated Chambers was sealed in the winter of the year recorded as 3,090.

The Chamber is administered under Protocol Sigma-7, which assigns jurisdiction over potential resonant frequencies to the Office and, by a much-litigated annex, forbids that Office from confirming any of them. The practical consequence is that the Chamber measures a great deal and declares almost nothing. Clerks refer to this as the quiet ratio.

Construction and the Substrate Floor

The Chamber occupies a single octagonal room, thirty-one paces across, with a floor of unglazed resonant tile laid over a bed of packed neutralized aether. Beneath this bed sits a second, unlisted substrate of Reference Specimen Alpha, certified at the Chamber of Resonant Verity and installed on Floor 6,208 by mistake in 3,104. The installation was never corrected, because the correcting party could not determine which chamber was the intended recipient, and both offices agreed that moving it a second time would only compound the error. The slab therefore remains in place and is swept around.

Ceiling apertures admit light at intervals matching the Potential Resonator Array, though the Array is not connected to the Chamber and has twice been mentioned in the same complaint. Humidity is held at 3.7% in accordance with Clause 14.7.δ, though the Chamber's own gauges were recalibrated against a hygrometer of questionable provenance and now read consistently low by an amount no one has agreed to specify.

The Quiet Ratio and the Declarations Question

Potentials are recorded in the Chamber on registration cards stamped with the Stamp of Latent Potential and filed by resonance class rather than by date. The classification scheme is set out in Ordinance of Contained Potential, which justifies the Chamber's existence by arguing that pure potential has contained reality and may therefore be filed.

Scholarly disagreement persists over whether potentials recorded here may subsequently be promoted to a Declaration of Concurrent Verity. The Chamber of Resonant Verity maintains that Declaration is exclusively its business and has refused four hundred and six promotions on that ground. The Office of Potential Records counters that a potential which cannot be declared is merely a number in a cabinet, and that the Chamber of Resonant Verity has thus far declined to say what else it might be.

"A potential not yet declared is not nothing. It is a thing held back. The distinction costs nothing to maintain and is the whole of our work."

— Ordinance of Contained Potential, Preamble

The Chamber Assembly has declined to resolve the question, noting only that it concerns architecture and is therefore not properly before it. The Chamber of Cartographic Calibration has been asked to review the matter on the ground that unresolved potentials produce sympathetic conflicts in adjacent holdings; it has not yet reported.

Recording Practice

A potential is entered by the recording clerk with its class, an estimated amplitude, and the name of the sponsor under whose authority it was raised. Sponsoring guilds are generally headquartered in the Gallery of Resonant Forms, which has a long-standing arrangement with the Chamber regarding the return of unsponsored cards. Cards are returned in bundles of twelve. The bundles are not opened on return, and this is understood by all parties.

Dampening is applied by a derivative of Application of Dampening Coefficients rather than by the parent method, the parent having once caused the west wall to hum for nine days in a key the tuners could not name. The derivative is weaker and simpler, and the wall has not hummed since.

The Humming of the West Wall

The husking incident of 3,141 is the Chamber's best-documented episode. On the third night of an unusually dry season, a sealed cabinet of higher-grade potentials was left unstamped during a change of shifts. By morning the cabinet's contents had shed into the substrate bed, and the resulting discharge was recorded by three nearby chambers at different amplitudes. The Vault of Resonant History catalogues it as a minor event; the custodians of the Potential Floor dispute this, having catalogued it as a significant one, and the two holdings have corresponded on the point without resolution since.

Access

The Chamber is open to Librarians of the fourth grade and above, and on written application to the Office of Potential Records, other persons of good standing accompanied by someone who has previously signed for the humidity gauge. Visitors are asked not to stand on the substrate slab, and the slab is marked.
