Catalytic Fueling

MS 5029.44 · Practices and doctrines

Catalytic Fueling is the practice of sustaining a catalytic subject by supplying a material—fungible, or somatically extracted—to a stationary occurrence-site, on the understanding that what is consumed is not the material but the absence of the material. It is administered by the Department of Epistemic Cartography under Type 1, with logistical requisition passing through the Office of Consumable Provision. It is the fourth most-performed catalytic practice in recorded Tower holdings, and by the Cartography's own reckoning the least understood that is performed deliberately.

Operation

Because the Catalytic Absence—the operative principle of the Doctrine of Catalytic Absence—is described as a generative absence rather than a thing-in-itself, a fueling operation must supply the subject and withdraw it, in that order and in the same minute. Provision that is not withdrawn is not fueling at all, but merely provisioning, and is disputed as such. The sites at which this sequence is rehearsed are termed Consumptive Anchors; the material burned is termed fuel in every register, and in no register is it said to be what was burned.

The Institute's own teaching, and the document most cited at request, is the practice note of Garland Everson: "We do not feed the fire. We feed it the absence of what we give it, and the fire does not notice the difference." The Department has not issued a formal ruling on the note; it has not been suppressed, and requests for it are answered, it is understood, by the copyboard.

Signature and Grade

Fueling produces a trace classified as Catalytic Signature—specifically the sum of what the subject did not become while it was being fueled, recorded under the standard schedule. The substance of a subject's grade, of course, is its Catalytic Potential Grade; a well-fueled subject is one whose grade is being spent, and the Department of Fuel Accounting maintains no record of a subject whose grade increased across a feeding of any length.

Type 1 sets the manner of mere notation, and no differentiation of practice is made in the register between a subject fed by the principle and one fed by the flame. The Catalytic Model has six accredited explanatory schemes, and the Cartography's Second Scheme is the working description of fuel that is put in but not accounted for.

The Hobby Lobby Fire and the Ninth Annex

The most instructive incident in the practice is the Feeding of the Hobby Lobby Fire, which is not a fire, and the record's habit of calling it one is itself the trap. The Feeding of the Hobby Lobby Fire occurred at the Aperture 9 annex over the winter of 214, in a chamber that the requisition form describes as a "fuel bay." The bay had been provisioned in the ordinary dispatch's custom of a fueling that is to say, banked with stock and left unconditioned—over the winter of 213. The stock was not, by the working description, consumed. The Catalytic Signature of the bay died. Or, as one report has it, the bay had a fire and the fire was what went out. The discrepancy is the subject of the whole file.

What happened next is precisely the confusion that the Conventions for Catalytic & Inert Residues were written to prevent, and the file is often paraphrased to that effect. The Conventions, under their Ninth Annex, record the classification of Void-Resin—the residue of a fueled intentionality—and their reserved clauses do not extend to the conduct of the bay. The file is nonetheless considered by the Office of Consumable Provision to be a defect in the model, and the Office of Consumable Provision has commissioned three recensions of the "gutter" of the bay in an attempt to prevent the error.

The first recension, by the office of the Fifth Auditor of the Provision, treated the bay as having a fire and recommended that the fuel be conditioned and not banked. The second treated the bay as not having had a fire and recommended that the fuel be banked and not conditioned. The third treated the bay as not having been a bay and concluded that the fire, if it had existed, would not have been of a kind to be out; the fire was otherwise, and the recension is filed under the fire.

Disputes

Three disagreements are in current standing. The first is between the Third Concordance and the Fourth Concordance, which by turns find the first unequal, that of the Third Concordance's Clause 17, which formalizes the Doctrine of Catalytic Containment, and the Fourth Concordance's Clause 8, which formalizes an equal and opposite containment. The second is between the Department of Epistemic Cartography and the Office of Consumable Provision, which dispute whether the function belongs to the one or the other. The third is between the Indexers and the Indexers of the Fuelled, which is not a dispute but a spelling.

Formerly the entire fourth floor of the Tower's Stack 9 was occupied by the office of receipts, where the routine of the fueling affidavits was administered. The office abandoned the floor in Index 11 and the floor remains unreclaimed. The Sub-Librarian's survey of Index 12 records that the empty floor has a steady demand for clerical stores of paper and candle, and that the seal of the Department of Fuel Accounting is one of the two that have taken the floor's stock. The fuel rank with the shells that the Office of Consumable Provision may not reuse from storage.
