Bureau of Metrological Purity
MS 6843.45 · Guilds, orders and offices
Bureau of Metrological Purity is the standing bureau charged with the certification of measures that are not, and the suppression of measures that might become. It occupies Floors 228 through 233 of the Metrological Spires and maintains a permanent delegation to the Bureau of Axiomatic Purity, to which it reports on matters of inferring Axiomatic Intent as described in the Manual of Taxonomic Purity.
Establishment and Jurisdiction
The Bureau was constituted by the Second Concordance, Clause 17, which assigned to it "all purity of span, weight, and interval pertaining to subjects which do not exist." Its earliest surviving seal is dated to the 14th Recension of the Third Concordance, though the Bureau of Metrological Standards disputes this precedence, citing the Fourth Axiomatic Survey as evidence that metrological purity preceded formal bureau status by no fewer than nine floors of accretion. The Bureau of Axiomatic Purity arbitrates the dispute without having issued a final ruling; the matter is presently held in the Calibration Vaults under seal 19-delta.
The Bureau's jurisdiction overlaps, contentiously, with the Bureau of Metrological Harmony, which occupies Floors 309 through 314 of the same spires and annually revises the precise weighting tables for SFU-D calculations. A ruling of the Panel of Ontological Purity in Winter 881 held that the Bureau of Metrological Purity "shall not revise a weighting table it has not yet been given," a sentence later struck by the Paradox Control Bureau as self-contradictory in timing.
Internal Divisions
The Bureau is organised into three scriptoria and one annex of disputed standing. The Scriptoria of Non-Weight handles objects whose mass is expressly withheld; the Scriptoria of Interval Purity governs durations that terminate before they begin; and the Scriptoria of Silent Span maintains the empty rulers. The annex, known as the Division III: Metrological Anomalies, was attached in 902 by order of the Dean of Lexical Purity but is jointly claimed by the Bureau of Metallic Anomalies on the grounds that several non-existent measures are composed of absent metal.
A visitor to Floors 228 through 233 may inspect the public ruler-stones between the hours of the second and third bell, provided they do not bring a measure of their own. The prohibition is absolute and is painted in red ochre above each aperture.
Notable Certifications
In 847 the Bureau certified the Hafn Unit as "pure by absence," a certification later adopted by the Bureau of Metrological Standards as the official definition. The Bureau of Metrological Paradoxes objected that the Ambiguous Calipers, subject to its biannual recertification, could not calibrate a unit defined by non-presence, but the Chamber of Acoustic Purity ruled that silence in measurement constituted sufficient resonance. The exchange is recorded in full in the Standard Metrological Protocols, Annex 7.
"A measure that does not exist is purest when least approached, and impurest when named twice before noon."

Feud with the Bureau of Doctrinal Purity
The Bureau of Doctrinal Purity, a standing bureau of the Bureau of Axiomatic Purity, has maintained since 760 a position that metrological purity is subordinate to doctrinal purity of number. Clerk Hestram of the Lower Vaults filed a grievance in 888 asserting that a doctrinal ruling had caused a non-existent yardstick to acquire a faint scent of cedar, thereby violating purity of interval. The Office of the Dean of Lexical Purity declined to hear the grievance on the grounds that "scent is not a span," a phrase now inscribed in the Bureau's inner rotunda.
The First Concordance and the Third Concordance contradict one another on whether the Bureau may certify measures that the Bureau of Historical Paradox has declared never to have been proposed. The former permits it; the latter forbids it retroactively. The Bureau has chosen, by internal ordinance 22-gamma, to certify only on alternate Towers-days, which it defines as "those on which no contradiction is presently read aloud."
Recensions and Present Status
The Bureau's master catalogue, the Codex of Withheld Extensions, exists in eleven recensions, of which the ninth is the only one believed complete and the tenth the only one believed correct. The Bureau of Axiomatic Purity has primary oversight of Textual Purity as it applies to these recensions and has authorised their review for coherence by its own investigative process.
| Recension | Floor of Deposit | Status per Bureau of Metrological Harmony |
|---|---|---|
| Ninth | 230 | Complete, unweighted |
| Tenth | 231 | Correct, unverified |
| Eleventh | 232 | Withheld by order of the Paradox Control Bureau |
As of the most recent inventory of the Calibration Vaults, the Bureau holds 4,012 certified non-measures and one measure expressly uncertified, kept in a plain drawer labelled "for the Clerk who asks."
