Bodycertificate of Irreconcilable Momentum
MS 8830.28 · Objects and instruments
The Bodycertificate of Irreconcilable Momentum is the physical counterpart to the Certificate of Irreconcilable Momentum, filed with the Chamber of Deferred Judgement in circumstances where a certified momentum differential cannot be resolved by documentary means alone. Where the ordinary Certificate asserts a condition, the Bodycertificate embodies it: the instrument is composed of the persons, furnishings, and floor-space implicated in the dispute, sealed in place under Schedule 4 of the Twelfth Concordance and thereafter treated as a single adjudicative object. A Bodycertificate is not a description of a deadlock. It is the deadlock, entered into the register and given a number.
The form was regularised in Cycle 11,940, following the Standing Committee on Embodied Instruments' finding that certain motions of Procedural Re-tensioning could not be executed because the parties to them had physically dispersed, leaving the underlying conflict intact but unlocatable. The Committee's remedy — to bind the conflict's participants into the instrument itself — has never been repealed, though it has been amended eleven times.
Composition and Sealing
A Bodycertificate comprises no fewer than three and no more than nineteen living signatories, at least one of whom must be a Clerk of Irreconcilable Directives and at least one a Librarian-Arbiter acting under Winters' Corollary. These are not witnesses. Each signatory is designated a component, assigned a position in the arrangement diagram annexed to the filing, and thereafter described in the register by component rather than by name — Component Alpha, Component Beta, and so forth, following the designations set out in Annex Gamma of the Sealing Protocols.
Sealing is performed with Grey Wax of the Lower Registry over the threshold of the room in which the parties were last known to have disagreed. The seal is applied to the doorframe, not the door, a distinction upheld in Matter of the Severed Sill after six cycles of dispute. Components remain within the sealed volume for the duration of the certification. Provision is made for meals, sleep, and the exercise of religious obligations under Schedule 4(b), but not for departure.
The Lacuna
At the centre of every Bodycertificate arrangement is an unoccupied space known as the lacuna, dimensioned to the exact footprint of the matter in dispute. For documentary disputes the lacuna is generally a rectangle of paper-sized extent; for disputes concerning Administrative Lodes or floor allocation it may occupy the greater part of the room. Components are seated facing inward, toward the lacuna, and are instructed not to address it directly.
Concordance 4,112 holds that the lacuna must be left vacant at all times and that any component who enters it forfeits their designation and must be re-seated as Component Sigma — a demotion with pension consequences. Concordance 4,119 appears to permit a single authorised entry per certification, for the purpose of dusting. The two have never been reconciled, and the Office of Mass and Momentum has declined to rule, noting in its Circular 88-C that the question is "not one of momentum."
Certification and Transmission
Once sealed, the Bodycertificate is transmitted — by hand, by the shortest stair-route, and never by lift — to the Office of Mass and Momentum for validation. Validation requires confirmation that the seal is unbroken and that the aggregate Argumentative Momentum of the components, calculated by the standard method of Cassini Units, exceeds the threshold of 0.3. Instruments falling below threshold are returned as merely embodied disagreements and must be resealed at the parties' expense.
Validated Bodycertificates are lodged in the Vault of Irreconcilable Holdings, where they are shelved upright and inspected quarterly. The Iterative Chamber receives a duplicate certificate for its records, though it has no power to alter the instrument. Where a Bodycertificate is validated during a period of Status Omega, the components are released to administrative custody and the instrument is considered satisfied, a procedure invoked nine times and understood by no one.
Duration and Dissolution
A Bodycertificate endures until the underlying momentum differential falls below 0.3 Cassini Units, a condition that in practice is met by attrition rather than by resolution. Median duration across the 214 instruments sealed to date is forty-one cycles; the longest, Bodycertificate 7, remained sealed for one hundred and sixteen cycles and was dissolved only when its final component was formally reclassified as furniture. The Doctrine of Component Attrition arose from that case and now governs all dissolutions.
Dissolution is performed by the ranking Librarian-Arbiter, who breaks the grey wax, reads the components' designations aloud in reverse order, and declares the lacuna open. Components are then free to depart, though many do not, and the Registry of Lingering Components maintains records of those who have remained in sealed rooms long after lawful release.
Scholarly Disagreement
The principal contested question concerns whether the Bodycertificate constitutes the dispute or merely represents it. The Recensionist School, relying on The Momentum Decision, argues that the instrument is evidentiary only — that the conflict persists independently of its sealing, and that a broken seal destroys the certificate without resolving the matter. The Constitutive School holds the reverse, citing Concordance 2,003 and the Principle of Embodied Jurisdiction, and maintains that the conflict simply is the seal, so that a Bodycertificate destroyed by fire leaves no dispute behind it.
Both positions are taught. Neither has been tested, because no sealed Bodycertificate has yet burned, and the Chamber of Deferred Judgement has ruled that the question is not ripe for adjudication and, in the same ruling, deferred it.
