Atlas of Unfixed Points, Vol. VII
MS 2082.58 · Practices and doctrines
Atlas of Unfixed Points, Vol. VII is a cartographic document compiled by the Librarians’ Surveyor-Cartographer Guild, enumerating stairwells, floors, and spatial anomalies whose positions are not fixed with respect to the primary shaft. It is the seventh volume in the Atlas of Unfixed Points series and is principally cited in disputes concerning the Gallery of Unfixed Perspectives and the procedural float of Stairwell Delta.
Compilation and Custody
The volume was sealed in the scriptorium of Floor 317 (the Verified Access Annex) during the 41st recension, under the oversight of the Office of the Cartographic Seal. Unlike its six predecessors, Vol. VII contains contradictory maps of Stairwell Delta during its procedural float, a condition the Second Concordance attributes to "the stair's refusal to inhabit a single elevation" (Second Concordance, Clause 9, Sub-annex B). Custody rotates biennially to whichever office most recently amended the Atlas of Verified Access Points, a practice established by the Treatise on Unmade Things Vol Vii during the Delineation phase of Protocol VII.
The Observatory of Unfixed Stars reconciles incoming probe data against Vol. VII as a matter of standing ordinance. The Log of Unfixed Coordinates, Vol. XII notes that Spiral T-54 intersects with the primary shaft of Spiral 40 at an unspecified elevation between Sub-levels 7 and 12, a finding the Atlas reproduces without commentary in its marginalia.
Contents and Notable Surveys
Vol. VII records Floor 407 (the Gallery of Unfixed Likeness)'s nearest stable neighbour as Floor 22, a determination later petitioned in the Whispering Atlas Petition and reviewed by the Inquest of the Whispering Atlas. Survey Log 12- contains the observation that "unfixed shadows become entities when the lamp is removed for inventory" (Atlas of Unfixed Points, Vol. VII, Survey Log 12-). The Lament of Unfixed Stars draws upon this line in its appendix on observational grief.
Field notes appended by Archivist-Lieutenant M. Kael include rules for the Gallery of Receding Perspectives and document a concentration of Temporally Unfixed Paradoxes within the Gallery of Unfixed Perspectives. The Annals of Contradiction, Vol. VII records that these field notes were themselves the subject of the Crisis of the Recalcitrant Stairwell, when a relay clerk mistook Kael's marginalia for a revised Third Concordance and renumbered three annexes accordingly.
Scholarly Disagreement
A long-standing dispute concerns whether Vol. VII's maps of Stairwell Delta are contradictory or merely asynchronous. The Foundations of Bureaucratic Cartography holds the former, citing the Moiré Atlas as corroboration; the In re: The Whispering Atlas ruling favours the latter, on the ground that "a stair observed at two float-phases cannot contradict itself, only confuse its surveyor" (In re: The Whispering Atlas, Decree 3). The Disceptationes, Vol. VII outlines the notational schema by which such disagreements are entered into a commentarius, though no clerk has confirmed whether the relevant commentarius was ever opened.
The Atlas of Nocturnal Anatomy disputes Vol. VII's listing of stellar object K-112 without commentary, arguing that silence on K-112's posture violates the Treatise's Delineation methodology. The Librarians’ Surveyor-Cartographer Guild has not replied, citing the First Concordance's provision that "an atlas need not explain what it declines to animate" (First Concordance, Clause 2).
Incidents of Amendment
In the winter of the 88th expedition cycle, a junior annotator of the Office of the Cartographic Seal inserted a floor plan for Floor 573 (the Gallery of Unfixed Shadows) into Vol. VII's binding, believing it had been omitted. The plan remained for eleven years before Archivist-Lieutenant M. Kael's appended rules were found to already cover the floor under a different designation. Removal required the Concordance's Annex 4 authorisation, which arrived stamped with the seal of a guild office disbanded in the previous recension.
Visitors to the custodial scriptorium are prohibited from bringing unsealed ink, as a single dropped quill has twice altered a neighbouring volume's survey log during a float-phase.
Cross-Reference and Reconciliation
Vol. VII is reconciled quarterly against the Observatory of Unfixed Stars' probe returns and the Atlas of Verified Access Points. The Synthetic Melancholy office maintains that the Atlas's contradictions produce a measurable decline in expedition morale, a claim the Lament of Unfixed Stars rejects as "melancholy misattributed to cartography rather than to the stair" (Lament of Unfixed Stars, Canto II). The Whispering Atlas Petition remains the standard citation for any expedition claiming Vol. VII misstates a neighbour relation, and the Inquest of the Whispering Atlas is consulted wherever such a claim reaches the Librarians.
