Aspect of Unfinished Things
MS 0150.51 · Practices and doctrines
The Aspect of Unfinished Things is a formal classification within the Librarians' Taxonomic Registry, codified under Concordance 142, Section IX: "Phenomena of Incomplete Manifestation." It defines the metaphysical and administrative status of entities, concepts, and systems whose existence is predicated on their incompletion — that is, holdings which are real in the Tower precisely to the degree that they are not yet finished, and which would cease to be cataloguable if brought to terminus. The Aspect is not a floor, a body, or a document, though it is routinely mistaken for all three; it is a status, and its holdings are dispersed across at least four hundred named locations, of which only a fraction have been surveyed twice.
Administrative oversight of the Aspect rests with the Chamber of Unfinished Symphonies, operating under a mandate from Concordance 88. That mandate was itself amended eleven times before its first reading was minuted, a fact the Chamber cites as evidence of its own fitness for the work.
Definition and scope
An entity falls under the Aspect when three conditions are jointly satisfied: it possesses a discernible intention toward completion; it has not attained that intention; and its failure to attain it is structural rather than incidental. A half-built stairwell is not an Aspect holding. A stairwell designed to arrive nowhere, and built to specifications consistent with that design, is.
The criteria for classifying an entity under the Aspect are set out in Annex VII of the Procedural Ledger of the Eastern Aspect. Annex VII is widely cited and rarely read in full; its fourth paragraph, which excludes "things merely abandoned," has been the subject of continuous interpretive dispute since its promulgation.
The Diagnostic School treats On the Aspect of Unfinished Things as the controlling precedent on the definition of Unfinished, holding that incompletion must be legible from the object's own records and not inferred by the cataloguer. The opposing School of Structural Absence maintains that inference is unavoidable and that the Diagnostic position merely relocates the cataloguer's judgment into the object.
Holdings and custodianship
The best-known holding is the Catalogue of Unfinished Bridges on Spiral 45, which records upward of twelve thousand bridge designs each lacking a critical architectural component — a bearing, a span key, a declared far bank. None may be completed; each is consulted as a completed record.
Custodianship of spoken and unspoken matters falls to the Atrium of Unspoken Things, whose purview is governed by Treatise on Unmade Things Vol Vii. The Treatise sets out methodologies for cataloguing entities requiring provisional or speculative metadata, and is the standard authority for any holding whose description must be written before the holding is fully determined. Where a Progenitor is also claimed as an Aspect of Unfinished Things, classification is referred upward to the Librarians' Taxonomic Registry under the priority rule at Concordance 142, Section IX, subsection (c).
Satellite collections include the Vault of Unfinished Business, the Curatorium of Unfinished Likenesses, and the Department of Ephemeral Cataloguing, which maintains the ephemeral slips on which most Aspect holdings are first recorded and, in most cases, last recorded.
Calibration
Aspect holdings emit a faint and steady cold luminescence, the measurement of which is the practical means by which surveyors confirm that an object belongs to the Aspect rather than to an adjacent class. The ultimate calibration standard for cold luminescence is the Oculus of Provisional Aspect, the central light source on Floor 11,507. Instruments are corrected against the Oculus before every survey; readings taken against secondary standards are accepted only where the Bureau of Quantitative Esoteria has countersigned the instrument's drift record within the preceding quarter.
Points of disagreement
The Aspect's boundaries are contested on three fronts. First, Concordance 88 treats the Aspect as a closed set — holdings are enumerated, and nothing may be added without amendment — while Concordance 142 describes it as "continuously constituted," meaning that any object becomes a holding at the moment it becomes unfinished. The two Concordances have never been reconciled, and the Chamber of Unfinished Symphonies has declined to seek reconciliation on the ground that the question is itself unfinished.
Second, Clause 14 of the Concordance of Unfinished Works purports to exclude musical compositions from the Aspect entirely, a provision the Chamber treats as void for want of jurisdiction. Third, the School of Structural Absence argues that the Aspect is not a classification at all but a description of the Tower's own condition, and that the Registry's codification was therefore an act of self-cataloguing. This position is not heretical, but it is not minuted.
Procedure
Notifications arising from Aspect holdings are governed by Annex III of the Procedural Ledger of the Eastern Aspect, which requires inter-departmental notice within nine days of any change in a holding's state of completion, including changes that consist only of a holding becoming more evidently incomplete. Notices are filed on Form 22-b and are, by long custom, filed late.
The Aspect's governing maxim, recorded on the lintel of the Chamber and reproduced without attribution in the Registry's front matter, reads: That which is finished is filed elsewhere. No floor has been found that receives the finished, and no expedition has been dispatched to look for one.
