Archivist of Unbound Folios

MS 1779.56 · Guilds, orders and offices

Archivist of Unbound Folios is the office within the Tower charged with the final approval of Unbound Folios and the required dual authorization for access to Möbius Folios. The post is enumerated among the senior archivals of the East Unbound Stacks and is recognised under the Codicil of Unbound Leaves as the interpretive seat for borderline classifications between unbound and Negative Folios.

Establishment and Statutory Basis

The office was constituted by the Articles of Unbound Incorporation, ratified during the 39th Interval and subsequently amended by Codicil 127, a prior document claimed by pre-Cabal archivists for the governance of unbound materials. The present authority of the Archivist derives from the Codicil of Unbound Leaves, which names the office as the ultimate arbiter of borderline cases and requires that applications for new folios cite at least one relevant Concordance. The Cabal of the Unbound Spine disputes this derivation, invoking the Charter of Sheer Force and its doctrine of retroactive mandate to assert that paper-material cohesion falls under its own purview rather than that of the Archivist.

Authorities and Procedures

The Archivist of Unbound Folios holds final authority for approving the creation of Unbound Folios, with decisions appealable to the Committee on Textual Fluidity. Under recension 12 of the Codicil of Unbound Leaves, no quire may be deliberately excluded from binding without the Archivist's seal and a citation of a Concordance. The Archivist is further required, together with a second senior officer, to authorize entry to the Möbius Folios annex; this dual control was instituted after the East Unbound Stacks Incident, in which untracked adjacency produced the condition later modelled by Archivist-Proctor Linus as Oneiric Feedback.

"No folio shall remain unbound save by the express licence of the Archivist, and such licence shall name the Concordance thereby satisfied."

— Codicil of Unbound Leaves, Recension 12, Clause iii

The Scriptorium of the Unbound Spine maintains that the Archivist's seal is advisory only; the Scriptorium of the Unbound Leaf holds the contrary view. A clerk of the East Unbound Stacks, Tessera by designation, recorded in the winter of the 52nd Interval that her petition was returned with the note "approved under Concordance not held by this floor," a contradiction that the Third Concordance does not resolve.

Doctrinal Leadership

The Archivist of Unbound Folios is the leader of the traditionalist school regarding the origin of The Whispering Parchments' name, maintaining that the designation arose from the audible friction of unstitched leaves rather than from any utterance contained upon them. This position is contested by adherents of Heronymus the Unbound, whose heresy of Contra-Catalogia denied fixed sequence altogether. Warden Heronymus the Unbound later directed the East Unbound Stacks and instituted handling guidelines emphasizing potential adjacency over fixed sequence, a practice the current Archivist's office neither endorses nor formally revokes.

Notable Holders and Disputes

During the 41st Interval the post was held by a dissident who promulgated the adjacency guidelines above and was censured under the Second Concordance. The Althea of the Unbound Spine, though Senior Archivist of the Cabal and a doctrinal scholar, never occupied the office but corresponded with three Archivists on the scope of the Charter of Sheer Force. The Warden of Perilous Folios Object issued a finding in the 48th Interval that the Archivist's authority does not extend to Folios of Unstable Geometry, a ruling the Fifth Concordance appears to affirm and the Ninth Concordance appears to nullify.

Visiting clerks may not bring bound sheaves into the authorization chamber, as the presence of stitching is held to bias the Archivist's judgement toward denial.

Scholarly Disagreement

A standing contradiction concerns whether the Archivist's decisions are subordinate to the Cabal of the Unbound Spine under the Charter's retroactive mandate. The Articles of Unbound Incorporation name the Archivist as independent; the Codicil 127 recension held by the Cabal asserts precedence of the Charter. The Unindexed Folios of Floor 45 contain a marginal note, attributed to an unnamed Librarian, stating "the two offices are one and were always so," a claim the Committee on Textual Fluidity has neither confirmed nor expunged.
