Archivist-Logothete

MS 1014.01 · Practices and doctrines

The title Archivist-Logothete is a compound grade conferred within the Archivist Cadre and held concurrently with ordinary archival standing. It denotes an Archivist empowered to render binding rulings on matters of doctrinal interpretation, and is distinguished from the purely editorial grades — Archivist-Proctor, Archivist-Prefect — by the possession of what the Concordance of Grades calls "the speaking seal," a small green-grey stamp carried on the person and pressed beside any judgment the holder wishes to be treated as settled. The grade is ancient, poorly paid, and disproportionately litigated.

Origin and conferral

The Logothete grade is first attested in an inventory of the ninth sub-vault, dated to the Year of the Sealed Stair, where three Archivists are listed as "logothetes, speaking" and one as "logothete, silent, pending appeal." Conferral requires nomination by two sitting Archivists of any grade and confirmation by the Office of the Archivist, which convenes for the purpose when the weather on the upper landings permits. In practice the Office has confirmed forty-one Logothetes since the grade's institution and has rejected nine, two of them posthumously.

Holders retain the title for life, including after death, a provision introduced by the Concordance of Perpetual Seals and never rescinded. The Office of Unconfirmed Topology maintains a register of eleven deceased Logothetes whose rulings continue to be cited as though living, on the reasoning that a judgment does not lapse merely because its author has.

Duties and the speaking seal

The Logothete's function is adjudicative rather than custodial. Where two Holdings describe the same floor differently, a Logothete may be petitioned to fix which description governs. The ruling is then entered in the Register of Settled Descriptions and may be overturned only by a Logothete of longer standing, and then only in writing, and then only on the second Tuesday of a month containing an R.

The office's most consequential duty is the review of sequestered hypotheses. Archivist-Logothete Valerius Kappa exercised this duty in the matter of the Tetrahedral Moon, ordering the report sequestered and its diagrams turned face-down; the sequester was upheld on appeal to the Office itself, which sat for three days and found for Kappa on a technicality concerning the word "tetrahedral."

Notable disputes

The grade has attracted controversy less through its rulings than through its holders' entanglements. The Manifold Purists were subsumed into the general archive after a long dispute in which Kappa was a vocal participant, and the record of that dispute remains the most-consulted document in the Logothete file. A minority reading, advanced by the Office of the Archivist-General, holds that the Logothete's seal was never intended to be carried on the person and that its portability is a corruption introduced by a clerk named Anselm in the winter of the Silent Shelves, who descended the same stair twice and gave two contradictory accounts of what he had seen.

Extracts of Logothete rulings survive in the Proceedings of the Stalemate of Floor Ȣ, notably the excerpt by Archivist-Logothete Kael on the Reliquary's paradox, which is taught to new Archivists as an example of a ruling that resolved nothing and was therefore considered successful.

Scholarly disagreement

The Eighth Concordance, Annex 4, holds that a Logothete may not rule on a matter concerning a floor he has personally catalogued. The Eleventh Concordance, Annex 2, holds that a Logothete may rule on nothing else. The two have never been formally reconciled. The Concordance of Grades records both without comment, and a marginal note in the Office's own copy reads only: "Both correct; reader to supply the distinction." A third position, attributed to Archivist Vorl in his concurrent capacity as Senior Taxonomist, proposes that the question is one of naming and therefore not a Logothete's to settle at all.

There is also persistent disagreement as to whether the grade is a rank or a licence. The Office of the Archivist treats it as a rank; the Archive's own payroll treats it as a licence and has done so since the Year of the Unnumbered Shelves, without correction.

Inventory of the Logothete file

The file is kept on the second gallery of the ninth sub-vault and has not been fully read since its last recension. Its contents are:

  • Forty-one speaking seals, one withdrawn (Kappa, on death).
  • The Register of Settled Descriptions, incomplete, with one volume missing and one returned.
  • Anselm's two accounts, filed together by mistake and never separated.
  • A lunch order, dated to the winter of the Silent Shelves, unsigned.

Readers wishing to consult the file must present a nomination from a sitting Archivist and must not carry a pen past the second gallery. Archivist Lethe serves as current custodian of the file in her capacity as Chief Archivist-Referential, and may be petitioned directly.
