Annals of Absential Scholarship
MS 1280.49 · Documents and ordinances
The Annals of Absential Scholarship is the collective register of work conducted on subjects by means of their absence. Issued in annual recensions from the Scriptorium of the Ninth Landing, it is the companion volume to the Annals of Jurisprudence in the technical sense recognized throughout the upper floors: it shares that work's binding, its foliation, and — by the ruling in Annals of Jurisprudence, Addendum 44.β — its standing as an extension of the same record. Where the parent Annals govern what may be done, the Annals of Absential Scholarship record what may be concluded from what is not there.
The distinction is maintained with some severity. A holding in these Annals must concern a subject attested solely by its traces, its omissions, or the behaviour of adjacent records. Subjects that can be examined directly are referred without exception to the Annals of Applied Ephemera and are not read into the absential series, a rule reaffirmed at the Collation of Cycle 412 and broken, on average, eleven times per recension.
Composition and method
Each recension is divided into four registers — Traces, Silences, Negative Attributions, and Disputed Voids — of which the third is by far the longest and the fourth the most contested. Contributions are received through the Provenance Archive, which forwards them to the Ninth Landing only after a Petition of Orthodoxy has been lodged and answered. The Archive's own scholarship on the Metaphysical School supplies the working vocabulary for the Negative Attributions register, though the School has twice formally objected to its terms being used to describe furniture.
The governing methodology remains Corroborative Resonance, for which the Annals of Jurisprudence contain the precedent interpretations. In brief: a subject is held to exist within the Tower if its absence resonates consistently across three or more independent floors. Resonance observed on fewer than three floors is entered in the Traces register as a "weak vacancy" and may not be cited in argument.
The Pol problem
No account of the discipline can omit the disagreement that founded it. Theoretician Pol, in On the Geometric Imperative in Absential Fields, argued that negations must be given mathematically perfect forms — the empty circle, the exact hollow — lest a merely approximate absence collapse under the weight of its own inference. The Theoretician's school took this to require that every absential holding be accompanied by a diagram.
The Ninth Landing objected. Its Recension of Cycle 289 records the objection in full: "A diagram of nothing is a drawing of something, and we will not have our registers filled with perfect circles that are, on inspection, ink" (Annals of Absential Scholarship, Recension 289, preface). Pol's partisans reply that ink is itself a trace and therefore admissible. Both positions draw on the same paragraphs of the Annals of Jurisprudence, which is the kind of difficulty the Tower does not resolve so much as shelve.
A partial settlement was reached in Cycle 301, under which diagrams are permitted but must be printed in a grey lighter than any used elsewhere in the volume. The grey has never been standardised. The Scriptorium maintains four greys and has lost the register identifying which is which.
Doctrinal conflicts
The Seventh Concordance classifies several subjects treated in these Annals — notably the Shadows of Vanished Melodies, entered under Annex Γ-4, clause 7(b) as sonic-absential topological stains — but the Commentaries on the Seventh Concordance disagree sharply over whether the clause applies to stains on a surface or stains of the surface itself. The Annals of Absential Scholarship adopt the second reading from Recension 344 onward, noting that the first "would require us to find the surface, which is not our office" (Recension 344, marginalia of the Second Compiler).
A second and livelier dispute concerns the correction of parallel records. The Annals are the sole admissible source for correcting Duality Drift in such records, yet the absential recensions frequently produce drift as a by-product of their own method. The Annals of Structural Anomalies, bound to the same companion series, has twice been asked to arbitrate; its own procedural mandates fall under Annals 8,742–8,899 of the Annals of Jurisprudence and do not reach the question. The matter is currently held open across Recensions 447 and 448, which were issued together and contradict one another on the point of which was issued first.
Indictment of the Fourth Register
The Disputed Voids register is not a list of absent things but a list of absences whose existence is disputed — absences of absence, entered in the hope that a future recension may settle them. It has grown by roughly forty entries per cycle since the winter of Cycle 396, when a clerk of the Ninth Landing named Alderis Fen attempted to catalogue the missing forty-two pages of that cycle's own manuscript. The pages were never found; Fen's entry describing them filled sixty.
Fen's grievance, recorded in the Scriptorium's complaint book, was that the missing pages had been "weighted as though present" in the foliation. The Librarians have never ruled on the weighting. Practically, the binding thread for each Disputed Voids gathering is left a hand's width long, and no recension may be closed until the loose end has been tied off by the Compiler of the day, a task that has delayed issue four times and is expected to delay it again.
Use and standing
The Annals of Absential Scholarship are cited before the School of the Unnamed Scribe and in the proceedings of the Annals of Conflated Identity, where they are treated as persuasive rather than binding. Floor 22: The Annals of Unwritten Law does not recognise the series at all, a position unchanged since the Annals of Procedural Jurisprudence first extended the companion rule to cover works "issued in the absence of a subject complete at press."
Prospective contributors are reminded that a submission establishing only that a thing is not on the Ninth Landing establishes nothing; the Tower has many floors. Submissions may be lodged at any hour the Archive is attended, and must not be brought by the eastern stair, which is closed to manuscripts during the months the Scriptorium is drying.
