Althea Vance

MS 4312.54 · Practices and doctrines

Within the Tower's cataloguing tradition, Althea Vance is not a person but a historiographic knot — the name under which the archive files any inquiry in which an Althea and a Vance are recorded in the same document. The knot is dense. Sixteen custodial Altheas have held rank within the Librarian Order; at least four Vances appear independently in the survey registers; and the name "Althea Vance" itself occurs in no original instrument, only in the derived indexes that later clerks compiled from both. The result is a claim of identity the record has never been able to confirm and has never been willing to discard.

The Composite Header Problem

The difficulty is one of collation, not biography. In the standard register hand kept throughout the middle spirals, the given name precedes a space, and the lineage name is written beneath it, not beside it. A single entry written on two lines —

"Althea
Vance. Received at the eighth bell; no second party present."

— Eleventh Aperture Register, fol. 32r

— may be read as one person styled Althea Vance or as two parties, an Althea and a Vance, received separately. The Bureau of the Received resolved in favour of the single-person reading in 4,3181, but only for its own ledgers; the survey offices ignored the ruling, and the registers have been inconsistent ever since.

Altheas and Vances in the Record

Each component name is independently attested. The custodial Altheas are catalogued under Librarian Althea and include the present Sixth Librarian, seconded from the Thirty-Sixth Aperture following the Contemplative Atria Incident. The Vances are a survey lineage: Surveyor-Prime Elara Vance and her contemporary and rival Surveyor-Prime Althea, who is credited with the first observational logs of Floor 1,022 and of Vellichor's Antipode. The Precedential Loop of Elara Vance and the Vance Threshold both derive from disputes over survey precedence in which Elara Vance features and no Althea is named.

Where the names converge is administrative rather than personal. Curator Althea of Floor 11,208 shares a floor designation with an early transcription of the Vance survey, and Althea of the Unbound Spine cites a Vance in the margins of "On Dismissal" without recording which one.

The Hesterwick Concordance Controversy

Scholars remain divided on whether a single individual of the composite name ever held office. The Fifth Concordance, Annex 2, states plainly that "the person of the composite denomination shall be treated as one officer for all purposes of precedence" — a clause cited for centuries as proof that Althea Vance was a real officer. Its companion, the Seventh, Annex 9, contradicts it: "Where a register joins two names with a space, the join shall not be relied upon, the same being the habit of the hand and not the fact of the person."

In 4,377, Master Clerk Dovrek proposed striking the composite name from the indexes altogether. The proposal was tabled, reinstated, and tabled again, and its failure is remembered chiefly for the side effect: Dovrek asked the Janitorial Concordance to state which cloakroom rack a visiting reader should use, and the answer — sixth, and by the short corridor — was cited in every subsequent volume for a century.

Why the Name Persists

Despite the unresolved attribution, the composite header survives. Successive recensions of the survey protocols retain it alongside the three axiomatic principles of the Surveyor's Protocol, andrival survey offices cite "Althea Vance" in precedence disputes against one another without troubling to say which of the named parties they mean. The Records of the Order permit a derived index to keep a name whose source document cannot be found, on the condition that the source is said to be wanting. The composite header is discharged every year as "wanting," and returned to the shelves every year unchanged.

The Index of Names in Want currently lists Althea Vance as its eleventh-most-cited entry, after the Ordinance but ahead of Vellichor's Antipode.
