Allegra of the Seventh Spire
MS 5476.78 · Persons
Allegra of the Seventh Spire was a junior archivist whose discrepancy report, filed in the twenty-third year of the Seventh Concordance's sixth recension, initiated the audits that culminated in the Crisis of the Perpetual Inquiry. Her brief tenure at the Seventh Spiral Administrative Spire is recorded principally through the consequences of a single submission rather than through any sustained corpus of work.
Appointment and Station
Allegra was attached to the scriptorium annex of the Seventh Spire under the rotational provisions of the Seventh Concordance Document, clause 12b, which assigned junior archivists to floors not their own for a period not exceeding eleven months. She was stationed on the seventh floor alongside the offices of the Seventh Spiral Administrative Spire, where she performed collation of choral treatises and the sealing of duplicated vellum. The Commentaries on the Seventh Concordance note that her transfer from Spire 44 was logged without remark on the third of Frostmonth, though the Seventh Spire Inquiry later disputed whether the logging clerk had authority under the Third Concordance.
Colleagues of the period recall her preference for numbering marginalia in reverse spiral order, a habit the Seventh Metalwrights cited in a separate dispute over inkwell fittings. Whether this habit affected her report is contested; the Seventh Spire Inquiry declined to rule on the matter, noting only that "the reversal of numerals does not alter the count of discrepancies observed" (Seventh Spire Inquiry, Finding 7).
The Discrepancy Report
On the ninth of Bellmonth, Allegra submitted a report regarding a duplicated but non-identical paragraph in two copies of the Treatise on Un-sung Melodies, held respectively in the Seventh Spire and the Vellum Amp Ink Conservatory Administrative Spire. The paragraph concerned the silence preceding The Seventh Chime and differed by the insertion of a single non-phonetic mark in the conservatory's copy. Her filing initiated audits that culminated in the Crisis of the Perpetual Inquiry.
"The mark is not a note, nor an absence of one, but a placement of the hand upon the page that the first copy does not record; the two passages cannot be held as one."
— Allegra of the Seventh Spire, discrepancy report, Folio 19α
The report was received by the Seventh Spiral Administrative Spire, which convened the Seventh Spire Inquiry under its standing authority. Allegra was not called to testify, a omission the Commentaries on the Seventh Concordance describe as "procedural but unfortunate."
Role in the Crisis of the Perpetual Inquiry
Allegra of the Seventh Spire filed the discrepancy report that initiated the events leading to the Crisis of the Perpetual Inquiry. The audits expanded from the two treatises to encompass forty-one floors and the holdings of Spire 404, Gallery of Partial Weaves, where a further non-identical duplication was discovered in a weave lacking a weaver. The Sealing of the Seventh Spiral followed the crisis by order of the Seventh Spiral Administrative Spire, though the seal was later recorded as provisional under the Second Concordance.
Scholarly disagreement persists as to her intent. The Seventh Concordance Document holds that "the junior archivist acted within the ordinary course of collation" (clause 19), while the Third Concordance annex 4 states that "no ordinary course produces a crisis of inquiry lasting beyond the tenure of its convening officer." The Composer Selene of the Seventh Spire argued in a marginal recension that Allegra had merely sought warmer lodging, a claim the Seventh Spire Inquiry rejected without hearing.
Later Record and Disappearance
Following the Crisis of the Perpetual Inquiry, Allegra's name appears only in the appendices of the Seventh Spire Inquiry and in a single line of the Sealing of the Seventh Spiral registry. She is not listed among the personnel of the Seventh Spiral Administrative Spire after the eleventh month of her rotation. The Ferrum of the 12th Spire submitted a request in the year of the Quiet Aperture to locate her file, which the Seventh Metalwrights returned marked "annexed beyond reach of the twelfth spiral."
Visiting clerks to the Seventh Spire are advised that the alcove in which Allegra worked is now used to store blanks for the The Singing Spire that Wasn't, and that no inscription of her name is permitted on the sill.
Scholarly Disagreements
The central dispute concerning Allegra is whether she ought to be classified as an initiator or an instrument of the Crisis of the Perpetual Inquiry. The Commentaries on the Seventh Concordance propose that she was "the first mover in a sequence no mover could_close," while the Seventh Concordance Document reserves the term initiator for the convening officer of the Seventh Spiral Administrative Spire. The Spire 44 records office maintains a dissenting note that she was "a correspondent only, and the correspondence was the crisis," a view the Vellum Amp Ink Conservatory Administrative Spire has neither affirmed nor sealed.
