Affective Genus
MS 3685.10 · Practices and doctrines
Affective Genus refers to a classification system for emotionally resonant bryophytic life-forms, as defined by Annex VII of the Third Concordance. It is a taxonomic framework used exclusively by the Bureau of Affective Ledgers to categorize and manage bryophytes (principally mosses and lichens) that demonstrate measurable, persistent affective output, thereby distinguishing them from purely botanical or aesthetic specimens.
Taxonomic Criteria
An organism is assigned an Affective Genus based on three core criteria, as per Concordance standards: persistent affective emission exceeding 2.3 sa.u. (sonic-affective units) as measured by the Ephemeral Gradients system; a documented lifecycle phase of "sentient dormancy"; and a stable, heritable affective signature observable across at least three generations of cultivation. The primary genus, established as a reference standard, is Gol77 Alpha, with its foundational specimen housed in Sub-basement Theta. Variants, such as Variant Gamma and Variant Alpha, are classified as sub-genera or strains based on deviations in emission frequency or waveform.
Curation and Containment
Specimens of recognized Affective Genera are cultivated within specialized Affective Architecture environments designed to sustain their output without cross-contamination. The Bureau of Affective Ledgers maintains a central registry, the Vex-2 or 'Affective Ledger,' which logs the location, current affective state, and custodial history of each catalogued specimen. Transfer of specimens between departments, such as to the Department of Sentimental Residues for residue extraction, requires a sanctioned motion filed under Clause 12 of the Second Concordance.
Containment protocols are rigorously enforced, particularly following the Year 742 Incident involving a breach of Genus Somniferum primus spores. Specimens demonstrating unstable or hostile affective profiles are remanded to the Custody of Minor Residues for Affective Finalization within Sub-Level 33.
Scholarly Dispute and the Gamma Anomaly
The classification system is not without controversy. A persistent scholarly dispute centers on whether affective output is an intrinsic property of the organism or a byproduct of its architectural context—a debate known as the "Nurture vs. Nursery" controversy. Proponents of the latter view, often affiliated with the study of Unquiet Architecture, argue that the measured affect is a resonance with pre-existing Emotional Fossils within the Tower's Living Stone, and not a genuine genus trait.
This dispute is sharply focused on Variant Gamma, which emits a confirmed antipodal resonance to the state of Vellichor’s Antipode. Some archivists contend Gamma's output is merely a reflective null-state, challenging its qualification as a true Affective Genus and suggesting it should be reclassified as an architectural echo. This debate is currently pending review by the Librarian of Duty.
Applications and Derivative Uses
Beyond pure taxonomy, Affective Genera serve several bureaucratic and archival functions. Their stable emissions are used in the calibration of affective scales and the construction of environments for studying Extinct Emotions. Furthermore, the Procedural Nostalgia practiced by certain departments relies on curated strains of Affective Genera to generate sanctioned, repeatable sentimental experiences for archival staff. The harvesting of Indexing Moths is also optimized in environments tuned to specific genera, improving indexing efficiency by approximately 17%.
Related Concordances and Oversight
The system is governed by a patchwork of often contradictory ordinances. While the Third Concordance establishes the taxonomy, Annex G of the Second Concordance mandates the Bureau's role in data transfer to the Vex Ledgers. Disputes regarding the affective property rights of newly discovered genera are settled under the obscure Threshold Grace statutes, which can lead to jurisdictional conflicts between the Bureau of Affective Ledgers and the Bureau of Sanctioned Motion. The final authority for genus designation rests with the Department of Sanctioned Melancholy, acting through its primary operational arm, the Bureau of Affective Ledgers.
